The story opens at a railway station where a missing-person poster of Tamizh catches the attention of a man who knows about his past. From there, the movie takes us back into the love story that eventually explains why Tamizh disappeared and what happened to Kodi.

Tamizh earns money by singing with an entertainment group and taking small jobs such as selling goods on trains and in markets. His close friend Inglo often stays beside him.

Kodi, meanwhile, is studying and hopes to become a teacher. Their first meetings are anything but romantic. Tamizh repeatedly teases Kodi, and at one point even arranges for her to be given the wrong station information.

When Shekhar discovers Kodi's relationship with Tamizh, he refuses to accept it.

Kodi is beaten and pressured into marrying Jilaki, while Tamizh is attacked as well.

Kodi tells Tamizh that if he can arrange ₹3 lakh, she can repay her brother's debt and possibly escape the forced marriage.

While travelling with the cash, Tamizh is stopped during a police vehicle check. The officers discover the large amount of money and seize it temporarily.

At the same time, Kodi escapes from the place where her family has taken her and tries to make her way back toward Chennai.

Eventually, police understand Tamizh's situation and release him.

But while Tamizh is trying to recover the money and reach Kodi, he is struck by a vehicle and badly injured.

The tragedy becomes even more painful because Kodi later travels in the same vehicle that helps take the injured Tamizh to hospital.

Neither realizes the other is there.

Kodi even prays beside the unconscious man without knowing that the person lying in front of her is Tamizh.

Cuckoo Ending Meaning

The ending of Cuckoo is powerful because the reunion does not depend on sight.

Throughout their relationship, sound becomes their language.

Tamizh recognizes Kodi through her footsteps, perfume, voice, and watch. In the final scene, Kodi finally recognizes Tamizh in a similar way—through the sound of his walking stick.
