Craig Drake’s designs are flat, as in geometrically simple, and aren’t abstract with too much details. His artwork removes the invalids, simplifies the scenery, emphasizes the necessary few and is sprayed in soft watercolor and selective vibrant solid colors. His third solo art exhibit wanted to change the gallery experience, – “Think mood and atmosphere, special lighting, a soundtrack; the sight, the sound and the manner in which you view and experience the artwork will be completely different,” and his fine art speaks for itself.

Regularly employing his painting skills for Pop culture characters and properties, Craig’s art emanates from the inspiring creative imitation of Patrick Nagel. In the past, he has done plentiful memorable pieces reimagining Star Wars, Kill Bill, Akira, Escape from New York, Aliens, Ghost in the Shell, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Lord of the Rings et al.

His most recent exhibit was much talked about in the artsy world, in which he brought new designs from movies like Ghostbusters, Batman, Ex Machina, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Scott Pilgrim, Big Trouble in Little China, and Alien. From thematic drinking options to posters illuminated with LEDs, the elaborate setting was part of his vision to amplify traditional art viewing. Art installations are not erected on visible stands, instead placed behind hidden walls. The main thrill was the suspense in not knowing what the artwork was about until it opened up.

This ‘flexibly minimalist’ orgy of plush artwork looks amazing just looking at from the computer screen. Imagine the grandeur of seeing it on a human scale glass protected public showcase; ergo if you’re in Los Angeles, you should definitely check out Hero Complex Gallery.
