Spoiler Warning: This article reveals the complete story and ending of Christine. Read only after watching the movie or continue if you want the full plot explained.
Some horror villains hide inside abandoned houses. Others appear in dreams or stalk their victims from the shadows. Christine is different. She is a beautiful red car with a personality, an uncontrollable temper, and a deadly obsession with her owner.
At first, Christine appears to be a supernatural horror movie about a killer vehicle. However, underneath the violence is a disturbing story about loneliness, toxic attachment, jealousy, and the way obsession can completely change a person.
Christine’s Dark History Begins at the Factory
The story begins in 1950 inside a car factory where several vehicles are being assembled. One particular red car immediately behaves differently from the others.
While a mechanic is inspecting its engine, the hood suddenly slams down and crushes his hand. Later, another worker carelessly drops cigar ash on the car’s seat. When the factory closes for the day, his dead body is discovered inside the vehicle.
The car is not simply defective. Something evil appears to have existed inside it from the moment it was created.
Twenty-eight years later, in 1978, the story introduces Dennis and his best friend, Arnie. Dennis is confident and athletic, while Arnie is shy, socially awkward, and frequently bullied at school.
Everything changes when Arnie notices an old red car parked outside a house.
The vehicle is rusty, damaged, and almost completely useless. Its owner, George, calls it Christine and agrees to sell it for only $250. Dennis warns Arnie that restoring the car will cost far more than it is worth, but Arnie refuses to listen.
He feels an immediate connection with Christine.
According to Arnie, he did not choose the car. The car chose him.
Arnie Begins to Change
Arnie’s parents hate Christine and refuse to let him keep it at their house. He therefore stores the car in a local garage and begins repairing it.
As Christine slowly returns to her original beauty, Arnie also transforms. He stops wearing glasses, changes his clothes, becomes more confident, and begins standing up to the people who previously controlled him.
Initially, this transformation seems positive. Arnie is no longer the frightened boy who allows bullies to humiliate him. However, his confidence soon becomes arrogance, anger, and cruelty.
Christine is not only being restored by Arnie. She is rebuilding him into the kind of owner she wants.
Dennis becomes increasingly suspicious after learning about the car’s previous owner. George reveals that his brother became dangerously obsessed with Christine. His wife and daughter died inside the car, and he later died there as well. Strangely, after his death, Christine returned to George’s house by herself.
This confirms that the car has been destroying families and controlling its owners for years.
Christine Becomes Jealous of Leigh
Arnie eventually begins dating a girl named Leigh. However, Christine reacts to the relationship like a jealous partner.
While Arnie and Leigh are sitting inside the car, the radio activates by itself and a bright light flashes from the dashboard. Leigh begins choking and becomes trapped when the doors lock.
She narrowly survives after escaping from the car with the help of a nearby man.
Leigh becomes convinced that Christine deliberately tried to kill her. She believes the car sees her as competition for Arnie’s love.
Arnie refuses to accept this. Instead of protecting Leigh, he comforts Christine and promises that he will always love the car.
That moment shows how completely his priorities have changed. Christine is no longer a possession. She has become the most important relationship in his life.
Christine Repairs Herself and Takes Revenge
The school bully Buddy and his friends break into the garage and completely destroy Christine.
Arnie is devastated. However, when he returns to the damaged vehicle, he witnesses something impossible. Christine begins repairing herself. Her crushed metal straightens, her broken parts reconnect, and within moments she looks completely new again.
Arnie finally understands that Christine possesses supernatural powers, but instead of becoming afraid, he becomes excited.
Christine then begins hunting everyone responsible for attacking her.
She chases Moochie into a narrow warehouse and crushes him. She later attacks Buddy and his friends at a petrol station, causing a massive explosion. Christine continues driving even while covered in flames and eventually runs Buddy down.
The garage owner later discovers Christine after she returns without a driver. When he gets inside to investigate, the car traps him and crushes him between the seat and dashboard.
Christine is now killing independently. Arnie may emotionally encourage her violence, but she no longer needs him behind the steering wheel.
Dennis and Leigh Plan to Destroy Christine
Dennis and Leigh realize that Arnie is no longer capable of escaping Christine’s control. Dennis still believes his old friend exists somewhere beneath the anger and obsession, but he also understands that the car must be destroyed.
They lure Christine to the garage and prepare a bulldozer. Leigh will close the building while Dennis uses the machine to crush the car.
However, Christine is already hiding inside.
She suddenly turns on her headlights and attacks Leigh. Dennis blocks the car with the bulldozer, beginning a brutal battle between the two machines.
Christine repeatedly repairs herself, making her almost impossible to destroy. It is then revealed that Arnie is driving her. At this point, he is no longer merely influenced by Christine. He is actively fighting beside her.
Why Does Arnie Die?
During Christine’s attack, the car crashes through the garage office. The impact throws Arnie through the windshield, and a large piece of glass becomes lodged in his body.
Even while dying, Arnie reaches toward Christine.
His final action is tragic because it shows that he remains loyal to the car until his last breath. He does not reach for Dennis, Leigh, or his parents. He reaches for the object that isolated him from everyone who cared about him.
Christine gave Arnie confidence, power, and attention when he felt weak and invisible. In return, she consumed his personality and destroyed his relationships.
His death proves that Christine never truly protected him. She only used his loneliness to create the perfect owner.
How Is Christine Finally Defeated?
After Arnie dies, Christine continues attacking Leigh. Dennis uses the bulldozer to ram the car and crush its body.
Christine attempts to repair herself again, but Dennis refuses to give her enough time. He repeatedly drives over the vehicle until it is reduced to twisted metal.
The following day, Dennis, Leigh, and Detective Junkins visit the junkyard. Christine has been compressed into a block of scrap metal.
It appears that the nightmare is finally over.
However, after everyone walks away, a small piece of Christine’s front grille begins moving by itself.
Is Christine Still Alive?
Yes, the final movement strongly suggests that Christine is still alive.
Her supernatural power was never connected to one specific engine part or mechanical system. Even after being burned, smashed, and crushed, she repeatedly regenerated.
The moving piece at the junkyard suggests that the evil force inside Christine survived the destruction of her body. She may eventually repair herself again, influence another vehicle, or wait until someone unknowingly takes part of her away.
The ending deliberately avoids providing complete closure. Dennis and Leigh survived the battle, but they may not have permanently defeated Christine.
They only slowed her down.
What Does Christine Represent?
Christine can be interpreted as a symbol of toxic obsession.
Arnie initially believes the car is making him stronger. In reality, it separates him from his friends, family, and girlfriend. Whenever someone questions the relationship, Arnie treats that person as an enemy.
Christine also behaves like a controlling partner. She becomes jealous, demands loyalty, punishes rivals, and convinces Arnie that nobody understands him except her.
The more Arnie depends on Christine, the less control he has over his own life.
His transformation is therefore not a traditional story about an unpopular teenager becoming confident. It is a warning about allowing anger, resentment, and obsession to replace genuine human relationships.
Final Verdict
Christine works because the movie turns an ordinary object into an unforgettable horror villain. The car does not need a face or voice to express emotion. Its headlights, radio, engine, and aggressive movements make it feel alive.
The ending is both tragic and unsettling. Arnie loses himself completely, Dennis loses his best friend, and Leigh nearly dies because Christine refuses to share her owner.
Most importantly, the final moving piece confirms that Christine’s story may not be finished.
The car was born evil, survived every attempt to destroy it, and may still be waiting for its next owner.
