Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Choddobeshi, including the complete ending, Mandakini Chowdhury’s secret plan, Niranjan Maitra’s identity, Deep’s fate, and the identity of the final killer.

The 2026 Bengali crime-mystery series Choddobeshi follows private detective Aditya Majumdar, whose struggling career suddenly changes when he becomes involved in the dangerous affairs of legendary actress Mandakini Chowdhury. The series premiered on Hoichoi and stars Parambrata Chatterjee as Aditya, with June Maliah as Mandakini and Srijla Guha as Sohini Maitra.

What initially appears to be a straightforward case of someone trying to murder a wealthy woman gradually becomes a complicated conspiracy involving inheritance, hidden relationships, false identities and carefully staged deaths. The supplied story follows Aditya as he investigates Mandakini’s family and eventually discovers that almost nothing about the case is what it first appears to be.

Why Does Aditya Take Mandakini Chowdhury’s Case?

Aditya Majumdar is not introduced as a glamorous or successful detective. His marriage to Ratna is falling apart, the couple is separated, and financial problems are making his personal life even more difficult. Their daughter Rumi remains the strongest connection between them.

Then Mandakini’s daughter Sohini Maitra contacts Aditya with a confidential case.

Mandakini is a famous actress, and Sohini believes someone is trying to kill her. An elevator has crashed, Mandakini has suffered a suspicious food-related incident, and later her car is hit by a truck.

The possible motive seems obvious: money.

After the death of Mandakini’s husband, Subir Chowdhury, an enormous fortune worth around ₹80 crore is connected to the family. Mandakini’s death could financially benefit her children, immediately turning almost everyone around her into a suspect.

The Three Main Suspects

Aditya begins investigating the family while pretending to be a writer researching the Chowdhurys.

Shankhamala

Subir’s daughter has left the wealthy family environment and lives a much more modest life with her husband. From Aditya’s perspective, money could easily provide her with a motive.

Her husband also makes no attempt to hide his hatred for Mandakini.

Shankhadeep

Subir’s son is in serious financial trouble. He is addicted to drugs, owes money and openly hates his stepmother.

More importantly, he knows that Mandakini’s death could potentially give him access to the family fortune.

At one point, he even threatens Mandakini directly.

Sohini

Sohini initially appears to be the caring daughter trying to save her mother.

But Aditya discovers another possible motive.

Her boyfriend needs money for his career, and Aditya overhears an argument suggesting that Mandakini’s property could solve their financial problems. Suddenly, even Sohini cannot be completely removed from the suspect list.

This is one of Choddobeshi’s strongest mystery devices: every time Aditya appears close to clearing one person, another suspicious detail emerges.

Subir Chowdhury’s Will Changes Everything

Aditya eventually learns an important detail about Subir’s will.

Mandakini controls the property after Subir’s death, but there is a major condition attached to it. If she remarries or becomes romantically involved with someone else, she could lose her rights over the fortune.

That clause initially seems strange.

Why would Subir specifically worry about Mandakini entering another relationship?

The answer eventually becomes one of the keys to solving the entire mystery.

What Was Written in Subir Chowdhury’s Diary?

Another major clue comes from Subir’s private diary.

The diary reveals serious problems inside his marriage to Mandakini. It also contains information about medicine Mandakini encouraged him to take because she wanted them to have a child.

Within the story, Aditya eventually concludes that Mandakini knew Subir already suffered from heart problems and deliberately pushed him toward something that could worsen his condition.

Subir later died from a heart attack.

This suggests his death may not have been as natural as everyone believed.

The diary becomes dangerous evidence, and Shankhadeep gets hold of information from it. He begins blackmailing Mandakini and receives a large amount of money.

Not long afterward, he dies after being hit by a truck.

His death is another major turning point.

Mandakini Chowdhury Apparently Dies in a Car Crash

Then the case becomes even stranger.

Mandakini is apparently killed when her car crashes and catches fire near a highway. The body found inside is so badly burned that identification becomes difficult.

Her phone is found at the scene, making it appear that Mandakini died in the crash.

But Aditya does not completely accept the obvious explanation.

Meanwhile, Mandakini has already changed the arrangements surrounding the fortune.

According to the new plan, if she dies naturally, the property can go to the children. But if she is murdered or dies under suspicious circumstances, the fortune will instead pass to an organization called Peace International NGO.

That detail ultimately exposes the purpose of the entire conspiracy.

The Biggest Twist: Mandakini Was Still Alive

The burned woman in Mandakini’s car was not Mandakini.

Her death had been staged.

The truth comes out when another murder scene is discovered at a rented cottage.

There, police find a woman who appears to be Mandakini along with a disguised man.

Now the impossible has happened: Mandakini supposedly died once in the car, yet her real body has appeared somewhere else.

That means the first death was fake.

And the man found beside her leads Aditya toward an even bigger revelation.

Who Is Harpreet Really?

Throughout the investigation, Aditya encounters references to Mandakini’s mysterious driver Harpreet.

The driver never fits comfortably into the story.

Aditya also repeatedly notices a disguised, bearded man watching him. Meanwhile, he has been searching for Mandakini’s former husband Niranjan Maitra, who once worked in theatre.

The fake facial hair discovered at the cottage finally helps Aditya connect the clues.

Niranjan Maitra, Harpreet, the mysterious disguised man, Raja and Anil Sitanand are all identities connected to the same person.

Niranjan never truly disappeared from Mandakini’s life.

Choddobeshi Ending Explained: Mandakini and Niranjan’s Master Plan

The central conspiracy of Choddobeshi begins long before Aditya is hired.

Mandakini and her first husband Niranjan Maitra had not completely ended their relationship after their divorce.

According to Aditya’s final explanation, financial problems prevented them from living the life they wanted together.

Mandakini later married wealthy businessman Subir Chowdhury.

After Subir’s death, Mandakini expected to control his huge fortune and eventually reunite freely with Niranjan.

But Subir’s will created a problem.

If Mandakini remarried or openly entered another relationship, she could lose her claim to the property.

So Mandakini and Niranjan needed the world to believe that Mandakini was dead.

That is why the elaborate conspiracy began.

Were the Attempts on Mandakini’s Life Real?

The biggest irony of the story is that the supposed murder attempts that brought Aditya into the case were part of the larger deception.

Mandakini needed convincing evidence that somebody genuinely wanted her dead.

Aditya was useful because he was an independent detective. If he investigated the incidents and produced a report saying Mandakini’s life was in danger, that report could help support the story she planned to create.

Even the attack on Aditya helps make the threat appear genuine.

Mandakini later tells him to stop investigating, pretending that she is concerned for his family.

But Aditya refuses to completely walk away.

That decision eventually destroys the entire plan.

Why Was Peace International NGO So Important?

Peace International is the financial mechanism at the heart of the conspiracy.

Mandakini arranges things so that if her death appears unnatural, the fortune goes to Peace International instead of her children.

But the organization is not what everyone believes it to be.

Aditya discovers that the people connected to it through the identities Maya Sitanand and Anil Sitanand are actually Mandakini and Niranjan using false identities.

The plan was remarkably ambitious.

Mandakini would fake her death.

The massive fortune would move to the NGO.

She and Niranjan would disappear using new identities.

And eventually they would leave India and begin a new life while secretly retaining control of the wealth.

The staged highway crash was supposed to make that possible.

Why Was Shankhadeep Killed?

Shankhadeep had become dangerous because he possessed information from Subir’s diary.

He knew enough about Mandakini’s past to blackmail her.

According to Aditya’s reconstruction of events, Mandakini could not allow him to interfere with the fake-death plan.

His sudden death therefore was not simply an unrelated tragedy. It was connected to the larger effort to protect the conspiracy.

But that decision created another enemy.

Mary.

Who Killed Mandakini and Niranjan?

This is the final reveal of Choddobeshi.

After Aditya gathers everyone together and explains Mandakini and Niranjan’s entire conspiracy, one question remains:

If Mandakini and Niranjan successfully staged the first death, who murdered them at the cottage?

Aditya announces that the killer is already in the room.

The murderer is Mary.

Mary confesses that she killed both Mandakini and Niranjan.

Her motive was revenge for Shankhadeep’s death.

Mary loved him deeply. Despite her own troubled circumstances, she believed he genuinely cared for and respected her. After his death, she was devastated.

Once she became convinced that Mandakini and Niranjan were responsible, she decided to kill them herself.

So the great irony of the ending is that Mandakini successfully fools almost everyone with a fake death — only to be actually murdered after disappearing.

Her perfect escape plan ultimately leads her directly into a real death.

What Happens to the ₹80 Crore Property?

With Mandakini and Niranjan dead and the conspiracy exposed, their plan to secretly control the fortune through Peace International collapses.

The remaining inheritance goes to Sohini and Shankhamala.

Shankhadeep, who once expected to benefit from Mandakini’s death, is already dead.

Mary is arrested after confessing to the murders.

The family mystery is finally over.

What Happens to Aditya and Ratna?

The case transforms Aditya’s life as well.

At the beginning of Choddobeshi, he is financially struggling, his detective career is going nowhere, and his marriage appears close to ending permanently.

Solving the Mandakini Chowdhury case changes his reputation.

The investigation attracts media attention, and Aditya begins receiving more work as a detective.

His personal life improves too.

Ratna gradually sees another side of him, and the distance between them begins to disappear. By the ending, Aditya and Ratna decide to give their marriage another chance.

The detective who began the story unable to hold his professional or family life together ends it with renewed success in both.

The Meaning of Choddobeshi’s Ending

The title Choddobeshi fits the story because disguise is not limited to fake beards, false names or physical appearances.

Almost every important character is hiding something.

Mandakini appears to be a helpless target but is secretly controlling the conspiracy.

Niranjan appears under multiple identities.

The supposed murder attempts are performances.

A death is staged.

An NGO hides a financial scheme.

Even the apparent victims eventually turn out to be perpetrators themselves.

Aditya solves the mystery because he stops concentrating only on the question of who wants Mandakini dead?

Instead, he eventually asks the more important question:

What if Mandakini needs everyone to believe that somebody wants her dead?

That shift completely changes the meaning of everything that happened before it.

Final Thoughts

Choddobeshi’s ending turns an inheritance murder mystery into a much larger story about greed, manipulation, secret identities and revenge.

Mandakini and Niranjan spend years building a plan that could allow them to escape with Subir Chowdhury’s fortune. They manipulate Aditya, stage attacks, create false identities and even fake Mandakini’s death.

But their scheme creates consequences they cannot control.

Shankhadeep’s death pushes Mary toward revenge, and the two masterminds eventually become genuine murder victims.

Aditya finally uncovers every layer of the conspiracy, Mary confesses, the fortune returns to the surviving heirs, and Aditya’s successful investigation gives both his career and his marriage a second chance.

In the end, Choddobeshi delivers its most fitting twist: the woman who spent so much effort convincing the world she had died eventually meets a death she never planned.
