Charmed: 4 Times Prue Halliwell's Gut Instincts Paid Off
Shannen Doherty passed away on July 13, 2024

Shannen Doherty, who passed away on July 13, 2024, only played Prue Halliwell on Charmed for three seasons, but she left behind an indelible mark. Fans were dismayed when her character was killed at the end of the third season because Prue had been the glue that held the three sisters together many times.
Straightforward and steadfast, Prue wasn't prone to histrionics, and she could always be counted on to keep a level head in times of crisis...unless she was under a spell. Though Piper (Holly Marie Combs) had an active power, it was Prue's power that could be counted on to move the necessary mountains. Here are four times when Prue knew what was best for the sisters even if they didn't agree.
Charmed: Season 1: Episode 3 "Thank You for Not Morphing"
When the Halliwells' father arrives in town looking to reconnect, both Piper and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) are curious, wanting to know more about him. But Prue didn't trust the man who'd walked out on the family. Even though Victor (Tony Dennison) came across as charming and interested in his daughters' lives, Prue wasn't about to open the door and let him back in so easily. And she was right. As it turned out, Victor wasn't back for altruistic reasons, and though he did the right thing in the end, Piper and Phoebe would have done well to listen to their older sister's instincts.
Charmed: The Entire Cole Turner Arc
Prue never trusted Cole Turner (Julian McMahon). From the very beginning, she had her doubts about the District Attorney who appeared to be all about serving justice. Even when he and Phoebe began dating, Prue didn't lower her guard around him, and, once again, her instincts proved to be right on the money. I just wish she could have been alive to help take him down.
Charmed: Season 1, Episode 7 "The Fourth Sister"
When a lonely, depressed young witch returns the Halliwells' cat to them, she tries to worm her way into the sisters' lives. And while Phoebe was more open to the idea, Prue's suspicions were raised from the start. She couldn't have been more correct as Aviva was actually working with a demon, although she didn't know it. Prue's sharp instincts led her to visit Aviva's house and look into her room where the truth was revealed.
Charmed, Season 1, Episode 11 "Feats of Clay"
When Phoebe's ex-boyfriend shows up in San Francisco, he brings a priceless urn to the auction house, hoping to sell it. It doesn't take Prue long to find out, not only is the urn cursed, but it's been stolen. And that Clay has lied about where he got it from. His deceit puts Prue's job in jeopardy. She doesn't want him anywhere near her, but, as was always the case, Clay was in trouble, and the sisters end up having to save him from the curse.
Prue always had the strongest sense of right and wrong among the three sisters, and she trusted herself to know the difference. Oftentimes, her instincts saved the sisters and/or innocents from death. Even though it wasn't always easy for Phoebe to believe her because she thought Prue was being overprotective or simply distrusting, more times than not, Prue got it right.
The powers that be made the right choice when they cast Shannen Doherty as the oldest of the three Charmed Ones. Not only could she pull off the "always right" personna, but she played to her strengths which was a strong will and a forceful nature.
Doherty passed away two years ago today, leaving a gaping hole in the Charmed Universe. Rewatching is even more difficult now. The sisters on the series lost their sister, and millions of viewers lost an actress who embodied strength, class, and character.
Like Doherty, Prue Halliwell was one of a kind, and Charmed reunions are missing a vital member of the team. She will always be remembered as a Charmed One, her role in the supernatural series easily eclipsing that of Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills 90210. There will never be another actress who could portray Prue Halliwell. And we hope, after one rocky reboot, that Charmed is left alone as Doherty suggested many years ago.
