Cells at Work!

Underrated Anime

I was just scrolling through Netflix looking for an anime I could kill some time with. In the mood for a scary anime but nothing was piquing my interest. Then I came across Cells at Work! I didn't read the description because I assumed it was an anime about prison, Which could be scary. I pressed play on the first episode, not having a clue what I was getting myself into.

Storyline: The human body consists of approximately 37 trillion cells. These cells are hard at work every day within the world that is your body. From the oxygen-carrying Red Blood Cells to the bacteria fighting White Blood Cells, Get to know the unsung heroes and the drama that unfolds inside of you.

Do you mean someone made an anime about the human body? Yup and it is amazingly creative, funny, thrilling, and educational!!

The show starts following a Red Blood Cell and her beginning her job delivering Oxygen and proteins to the body. She is a quirky and fun character who just wants to do her very best. However, she runs into bacteria incursions and meets a certain white blood cell that ends up becoming good friends with her.

The White Blood Cells' job is to kill bacteria that enter the body. I will add a gore warning. If you do not like body or gore do not watch this show. The animators loved covering everyone in blood when they killed bacteria. Although they are created and trained to be brutal defenders of the body, the White Blood cell that befriends the Red Blood cell has a soft spot.

The creators were genius. Every character has a completely different look, mannerisms, and job in the show. They took something we learn about in science class and transformed it into an entertaining story.

Season 1 - 13 episodes

Each of the episodes in season 1 is unique. There is no real storyline, you are mostly just following the characters around as they go through the struggles of keeping the human body alive. The creators were creative with the challenges our body goes through and how we barely can understand the work that is happening inside our body every second.

When we get a scrap on our knee we don't think much of it. Episode 2 shows how it completely disrupts the body and how quickly everyone has to work together to repair it.

Episode 5 goes through what happens in our body during allergy season and the struggle our body goes through every year.

Every episode is extremely entertaining and educational.

Again if you're not big on gore, don't say I didn't warn you.

OVA Episode

Extremely funny episode! A bored cell meets a cell with a funny hat and decides to make some fun and mess with the other cells. It's all fun and games until he finds out his new friend is a cold virus!

Season 2 - 8 Episodes

Season 2 is the same body and characters as season 1 but a very different story. Season 1 is just fun short stories, in season 2 there is one story arc. You are following a cell that rescues some germs. But aren't germs bad? Well, we find out this season that some germs can also be good for your body. I enjoyed having more of a story than just random episodes and found season 2 very entertaining.

Cells at work! Code black - 13 episodes

After watching cells at work and seeing what happens in our bodies, Code black shows us what happens when we don't take care of our bodies. Not only was this a fun gender-bend reality, but it was realistic. What happens when we are under constant stress? or pound back an energy drink? What about drinking or smoking? These are the struggles that the cells in code black face as they work in an unimaginably hard work environment.

In cells at work we never find out what age or gender the body they are taking care of is. In code black, we know it's a middle-aged male. Which makes the episodes clearer about what is happening in his body and what he is unknowingly doing to abuse it.

Do you think he will learn to start taking care of his body? Do you think you are taking care of yours?

I thought this was a very entertaining and creative anime. Highly recommend giving it a watch. I will put another gore warning here, it is bloody.

I give cells at work! 4 out of 5 stars
