Black Panther is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Marvel films of all time, especially in light of the latest casting news. You may recognize the name Letitia Wright from Humans, My Brother the Devil, and Urban Hymn; now, she's joined the cast of Black Panther, where she'll be playing a key part as the character of Shuri!

Letitia Wright is a British actress who has long campaigned for diversity. In 2012, she was singled out by Screen International as one of its Stars of Tomorrow; Michael Caton Jones, the director who discovered Leonardo Di Caprio, singled her out as one of the most promising actresses of this generation. Black Panther now sees her starring in her first Hollywood blockbuster, alongside actors like Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan!

Created back in 2005, Shuri is one of the most important characters in the world of the Black Panther. She's T'Challa's younger sister, and she grew up with a desperate desire to claim the mantle of the Black Panther. Part of the process of becoming the Black Panther involves taking on the current Black Panther in combat; Shuri planned to defeat her uncle S'yan in combat, but was shocked to discover that her brother had beaten her to it.

The relationship between Shuri and T'Challa is a fascinating one, built on equal parts respect and hostility. At one point, with T'Challa comatose, Shuri stepped up to become ruler of Wakanda. She approached the Panther God for its blessing, but the Panther God rejected her; her pride and arrogance left the Panther God furious. Later, though, Shuri earned the Panther God's respect when she proved willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of Wakanda.

Marvel is playing the long game.

It's pretty clear that #Marvel is playing the long game with Letitia Wright. She's an actress of real talent, with massive potential, and she's playing a major role in Black Panther. The dynamic between T'Challa and Shuri will be core to both characters, and she's sure to play a major role as the franchise continues.

Will the movies follow the same character arc as the comics? Will we see the same wonderful multi-faceted relationship between Shuri and T'Challa? Is it possible that we'll see Shuri step forward to take on the role of the Black Panther at some point? Only time will tell; but in casting such a promising actress for this role, Marvel is making a strong commitment to the character's future.

The Black Panther movie is increasingly one of the most promising films in Marvel's slate. This casting choice is an inspired one; one of the most promising actresses of our generation is now part of the #MCU, and she has the potential to become a future franchise lead. Tomorrow's Marvel Universe is taking shape — and it looks good!
