Big Finish Wishlist

Doctor Who characters that I hope Big Finish revisit in audio

With the second seasons of Lady Christina and Jenny: The Doctor’s Daughter this year and the ninth series of River Song out later this year, Big Finish Productions is known for continuing stories across the Doctor Who universe and its spin-off shows.

So after having a think, I have complied a list of potential audio dramas - part fan wishlist and part pitch, there’s quite a few characters I’d like to see/hear in their own box set:

Ace - A Charitable Earth

Through Big Finish and a recent Classic Who marathon, I have had the pleasure of becoming a fan of Sophie Aldred’s character Ace, particularly how her character has developed from adolescence to adulthood.

A potential boxset I’d love to hear is with Ace at the organisation she has built - A Charitable Earth - which has been hinted at through Aldred’s debut novel At Childhoods End and Guy Adams’s In Remembrance Class audio drama, both of which give viewers a glimpse of Ace as a rebellious teenager and a successful business woman.

A potential storyline could see Ace trying to defeat an alien threat with a new cast of characters, some her colleagues and younger adolescence characters Ace is helping through her charity. Ace is one of those characters that has the perfect complexity that makes her a perfect character to cast as the protagonist of her own box set. Maybe even a cameo of the Doctor or another familiar character, but yes - we need an Ace centred series!

Class - Series Two

Based on the success of the Coal Hill gang of misfits on audio with the four box sets, many have wanted to see a continuation after that cliffhanger on the cancelled show.

There’s only so far you can take a cast of characters that are in sixth form, but I think this is a series that could have a good series run. The characters have really been developed through the box sets, which really filled in the gaps of season one.

With the finale, there was some severe emotional trauma the characters went through and a clear foreshadowing of the threat the characters would face - both of which would be great to explore in a continuation series with the available cast reprising their roles.

Martha Jones - A Year On The Run

Freema Agyeman’s reprisal of Doctor Martha Jones last February in Torchwood: Dissected was just superb! The entire production did her character justice and the writing was just brilliant - as always.

Naturally, this opened up a whole list of possibilities for her character to feature across both Doctor Who and Torchwood in the future. As much as it would be great to see David Tennant and Agyeman reunite in a Tenth Doctor boxset, it would be great have Martha star in her own spin-off.

Similar to Rose Tyler’s Dimensions series, there’s a huge gap of time when Martha is on the run from the Master for a year. A box set with Martha away from the Doctor and on her own will be a wonderful character exploration, but also a chance to answer a one of the mysteries of Martha Jones.

Sarah Jane Smith’s Companions

The Doctor Who fandom and Big Finish have continuously paid tribute to the late Elisabeth Sladen, particularly last year which saw Russell T Davis penning a short story narrated by Big Finish regular Jacob Dudman with Who actors reprising their roles as tribute for Sladen’s anniversary.

Goodbye, Sarah Jane was a moving tribute to a beloved actress. It also made me think there are stories that could still be told within that universe - whether it’s Sladen’s daughter Sadie Miller continuing her superb performances of Sarah Jane, but also Tommy Knight, Daniel Anthony and Anjli Mohindra reviving their characters would be a great addition to the Big Finish universe.

Torchwood: Yvonne Hartman & the Queen

This may sound like a mad duo for the science-fiction series, but given the superb Queen Victoria audio dramas - it would be interesting to see a modern monarchy in Torchwood.

Big Finish has already laid the foundation for Yvonne's friendship with the Queen, but the potential stories of Yvonne having to save the literal embodiment of the country she loves or perhaps going on the run as Queen Elizabeth’s protector with the next alien threat - I do think with the right casting, this could be a great idea for Tracy-Ann Oberman’s character.

Whether this is just wishful thinking or actually inspires some conversations in the Big Finish writers room, I am putting this out into the universe. But either way, I am absolutely looking forward to what Big Finish has in store for 2021…
