Bhootam Bhagyam is a Marathi horror-comedy that combines friendship, supernatural mystery, greed and emotional drama. What initially looks like a funny story about a group of unemployed friends slowly develops into a tale involving an ancient queen, reincarnation and a magical object capable of turning stone into gold.
The movie also carries a meaningful message: easy money may look attractive, but uncontrolled greed can destroy a person’s life.
The Legend of the Paras Stone
The movie begins with the story of a mysterious Paras stone or magical coin. According to the legend, it possesses the power to transform ordinary stones into gold.
Many kings, warriors and powerful people have tried to find it. Their greed caused wars, destruction and the collapse of entire kingdoms. However, the magical object remained hidden, almost as though it were waiting for the right person to discover it.
The story then moves to the present day.
A government scheme promises a small payment to the first 100 unemployed people who arrive at a particular location. Among the crowd is a group of close friends: Gaja, Reel, Deshmukh, Apte, Pumpy, Modak and a man whom everyone calls Uncle.
Although Apte already has a job, his friends bring him along so that he can also collect the money.
After receiving their payments and calculating their expenses, the friends realise that they have only around ₹4,700 available for rent. They begin searching for an affordable house, but finding a decent property within such a limited budget proves almost impossible.
Gaja Finds the Magical Coin
Gaja steals a man’s wallet and discovers a property dealer’s contact number inside it. The friends call the dealer, who takes them to an old, damaged and apparently abandoned house.
Nobody likes the property. The building looks frightening, the condition is terrible and even the mobile network barely works.
However, while examining the house, Gaja hears a mysterious voice calling him “Dinkar.” Almost hypnotised, he walks deeper inside the building and discovers a strange throne. Near it is a small container filled with water.
When Gaja puts his hand inside, he finds the same magical Paras coin mentioned at the beginning of the movie.
He secretly keeps it without telling his friends.
The group initially decides not to rent the house. However, they change their minds after meeting Sarojini, an attractive woman who runs dance classes nearby. Since all the friends are immediately impressed by her, they agree to stay in the house.
Monty and Jatai’s Deadly Plan
Hoping to sell the coin, Gaja meets a dealer named Monty. The moment Monty sees it, he realises that it is extremely valuable.
Gaja initially demands only ₹5,000, but Monty offers him a much larger amount and even gives him ₹1 lakh as an advance.
Blinded by excitement, Gaja follows Monty to collect the remaining money. Before entering the location, an elderly woman warns him that the path ahead is dangerous. Gaja ignores her because he is already dreaming about becoming rich.
Inside, he sees several Aghori practitioners performing rituals. Monty introduces him to a terrifying tantric woman named Jatai.
After placing the coin in her mouth, Jatai sees visions of endless gold and confirms that it is the real Paras. She then hypnotises Gaja and prepares him as a human sacrifice.
Fortunately, Gaja accidentally touches a locket containing pictures of God and his mother. This breaks the hypnosis, allowing him to escape.
When he returns home, his friends are celebrating because they believe he has won a lottery. They have already spent money on food and alcohol. When Gaja tells them that he barely escaped with his life, they refuse to believe him.
The Arrival of Anamika’s Ghost
Gaja realises that the magical coin has somehow returned to his pocket. Knowing that it is valuable but not understanding its powers, he tries to summon a spirit in the same way he saw the tantric group performing rituals.
At first, nothing happens.
Later, Gaja and Reel pretend that a female ghost named Anamika has arrived. However, when the other friends attempt the ritual without them, the glass on the carrom board begins moving by itself.
This time, a real spirit has appeared.
The ghost confirms that her name is Anamika. When Modak asks for Sarojini’s phone number, the spirit provides the correct digits. The friends are shocked but also excited by Anamika’s abilities.
Following advice from Gaja’s relative, they begin offering the spirit food, alcohol, cigarettes and other items to keep her satisfied.
Soon, people hear about Anamika and begin visiting the house to ask questions. One man wants information about his missing father. Anamika provides the correct location, and the man successfully finds him.
Realising that they can make money, the friends start selling tickets to people who want answers from the ghost. Their unusual supernatural business becomes popular, bringing them fame and wealth.
However, a mysterious spiritual man warns them that Anamika is extremely dangerous. They ignore him because the business is earning them good money.
Trouble Begins Inside the Haunted House
A police officer visits to determine whether the friends are cheating people. When he asks Anamika to reveal his father’s name, the ghost answers “Damodar.”
The officer becomes furious because Damodar is supposedly his uncle. The friends laugh and insist that Anamika never lies, suggesting an uncomfortable family secret.
Angered and embarrassed, the officer destroys their setup, arrests them and beats them at the police station.
Gaja’s uncle eventually arranges their release. In return, he asks them to allow his nephew Maya to stay in their house for a few days.
Maya initially appears normal, but his increasingly strange behaviour frightens everyone. He loves extreme cleanliness, keeps cockroaches and lizards and speaks to a doll while alone.
The friends eventually send him away.
Meanwhile, Pumpy becomes seriously ill. Doctors reveal that excessive drinking has badly damaged his liver and that another drink could kill him.
Although Pumpy promises to stop, he later wakes up in a possessed state and drinks the alcohol offered to Anamika. His condition immediately worsens, and he is rushed to intensive care.
The friends finally understand that the ghost is dangerous.
They pack their belongings and try to escape, but no matter which direction they travel, they repeatedly return to the same haunted house.
Anamika’s True Story
The spiritual man who earlier warned them finally reveals the truth.
Anamika was once a powerful queen who possessed the magical Paras coin. Because of its powers, her kingdom was wealthy and peaceful.
However, a man named Dinkar stole the coin. As soon as it disappeared, everything created through its magic returned to stone, leaving the kingdom in poverty.
To reactivate the Paras, Anamika needed to place the thief’s blood on it.
Dinkar’s mother begged the queen to forgive her son and guide him toward the right path. Anamika promised that she would reform Dinkar instead of killing him.
However, Jatai opposed the queen’s decision. She attacked and killed Anamika and many others before the queen could fulfil her promise.
Since then, both Anamika and Dinkar have repeatedly been reborn. In every lifetime, Dinkar finds and steals the coin, while Anamika tries to remove the greed from his heart.
The biggest revelation is that Gaja is Dinkar’s latest reincarnation.
That is why the coin called to him and why Jatai wanted to sacrifice him. Dinkar’s blood could reactivate the Paras stone.
Maya’s Real Identity
Jatai kidnaps Gaja and prepares to sacrifice him. His friends search everywhere but cannot find him.
Maya unexpectedly returns and reveals that he knows Gaja’s location. He leads the group to Jatai’s hideout, where they rescue Gaja. Maya has also informed the police, and Jatai and her followers are arrested.
The friends bring Gaja and the magical coin back to the haunted house. Believing that Anamika is the only person who can end the curse, they summon her again.
Maya then appears in the form of Anamika and sits on the ancient throne.
This reveals another major twist: Maya is Anamika’s reincarnation.
The elderly woman who previously warned Gaja also arrives. She is Dinkar’s mother, still waiting for Anamika to fulfil her promise.
Bhootam Bhagyam Ending Explained
Anamika initially becomes angry after remembering that Gaja, as Dinkar, stole the Paras stone. However, Dinkar’s mother reminds her of the promise she made.
Anamika asks Gaja why he wanted the coin.
Gaja explains that he watched his mother struggle throughout his childhood. He wanted to use the stone to build her a golden house and give her everything she had never received.
Anamika asks him to think carefully about what his mother truly wants.
Gaja remembers that his mother never asked for gold, wealth or a luxurious home. She only wanted him to remain happy, become responsible and succeed through his own hard work.
For the first time, Gaja understands that greed has been controlling him. He no longer wants the coin or the easy wealth it promises.
By rejecting the Paras, Gaja finally destroys the greed that had survived inside Dinkar through several lifetimes.
Anamika’s promise is therefore fulfilled. She successfully guides Dinkar onto the right path. Anamika and the other trapped spirits finally receive peace and leave the haunted house.
Gaja and his friends also move away.
Gaja throws the magical coin into the water and begins living honestly. He finds a real job and proudly calls his mother to share the news. She is happier about his employment than she could ever have been about a house made of gold.
In the final scene, Gaja notices that someone has dropped a wallet.
Once again, he faces two choices: keep the wallet and steal the money, or return it to its rightful owner.
The movie ends without showing his final decision. However, his transformation strongly suggests that he will return it.
Final Thoughts
Bhootam Bhagyam may look like a simple horror-comedy, but beneath the ghosts and humorous situations lies an emotional story about greed, friendship and personal growth.
The Paras stone represents shortcuts to success. Gaja believes that magical wealth can solve his family’s problems, but he eventually learns that his mother values his honesty and happiness more than money.
The final wallet scene becomes the true test of his transformation. Destroying or rejecting a magical coin is easy, but choosing honesty during an ordinary moment is what proves whether he has genuinely changed.
Ultimately, the movie’s message is clear: real fortune does not come from gold, magic or stolen money. It comes from earning an honest living and becoming someone your loved ones can be proud of.
