Best Zombie Movies on Netflix

What better place for the best zombie movies to come back to life than Netflix. The streaming service is always adding new movies to their platform, making them readily available for eager hands of those who enjoy documentaries, action films, and zombie movies, as well as much more. It seems like the dead in these movies are never going to actually go to the grave with services like Netflix constantly picking them up and putting them right back in our faces. But hey we’re not complaining. We want all the blood, guts and gore we can handle.

Day of the Dead

An oldie but a goodie and one of the best zombie movies on Netflix. Day of the Dead is the 1985 zombie film directed by George A. Romero. The film starred Lori Cardille, Joseph Pilato and Terry Alexander and was the original for which the 2008 film of the same name was loosely based. In the 1985 version, the world has become overrun by zombies and only a small portion of the US have survived. These survivors are government and military scientists and personnel who seek refuge in military bases as they search for a solution to the zombie outbreak. Additionally, they have set up a coral of “docile” zombies for which they are studying, and teaching behaviors such as saluting, pointing a pistol and listening to music. As tensions rise, all hell breaks loose among the humans and the undead. This film is the third in Romero’s Dead series, which also includes Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead.

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead

After a zombie attack on his sister, Mechanic Barry and his family are warned to leave the city as quickly as possible, but plans become awry quickly and Barry must make a quick and hasty decision. Barry ensues on a mission to get to his sister’s studio and rescue her, but encounters many people, obstacles and tough choices along the way, including the mad scientist Doc who experiments on zombies and the crooked military officials who work for Doc. This movie is about sacrifice, family and of course zombies, everything you need to create a stand out film. One of the best zombie movies on Netflix stars Jay Gallagher and Bianca Bradley. The 2014 film, dubbed the combination where “Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead” is the directorial debut of Kiah Roache-Turner.

The Returned

Set in the 1980s, one of the best zombie movies on Netflix takes place when life hasn't quite returned to normal in the post zombie plagued world. The infected, called "the returned" are now able to live normal lives thanks to a drug that keeps their zombie symptoms at bay, but missing only one dose of the medicine can send them into a crazed zombie state. With the only source of the formula being extracted from dead zombies, there are rumors that the drug are running out and there is unease regarding the uprising of the returned. Struggles ensue as people are desperate to get the care for their families and loved ones. A physician who cares for the returned is stuck in the middle of the struggle, as her husband is also returned and she works hard to create a synthesized treatment for the infected. Starring Emily Hampshire and Kris Holden-Reid, the 2013 Spanish Canadian film is directed by Manuel Carballo.

World War Z

In this zombie movie on Netflix, a family escapes from Philadelphia to New Jersey when a zombie outbreak in metropolitan areas forces them to flee their home. Gerry, the father, portrayed by Brad Pitt, and his family are offered safety via special evacuation from a friend in the government, and is quickly swept into investigating the outbreak. Gerry travels the world in a battle against the clock to pinpoint the center of the outbreak and stop it from undertaking governments and armies around the world. For those of you who are big fans of The Walking Dead, this is probably the film for you. Let's hope Netflix comes to its senses and adds Fear the Walking Dead, which stars To All the Boys I've Loved Before's Israel Broussard, to its selection as well; we want all the zombie content we can get, after all. The 2013 film stars Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos and is directed by Marc Foster.

Cockneys vs Zombies

Not all of the best zombie movies on Netflix have to be about trying to save all of humanity from the flesh eating undead in such a serious way. Cockneys vs Zombies is a 2012 British film, that takes place in the East End of London directly following a zombie outbreak. With a plan in mind to rob a bank to save their grandfather’s retirement home from builders, and their mission is only successful as a result of the police being killed by a group of zombies. Simultaneously, the zombies have zoned in on the retirement home and a group of residents have taken refuge in the kitchen. When the robbers and the elderly eventually meet up, the struggle isn’t over and they must still find ways to escape the zombie hordes. The film stars Harry Treadaway and Michelle Ryan and is directed by Matthias Hoene.

Shaun of the Dead

Another one of the best zombie movies on Netflix that is rigged with comedy around every corner. Trying to balance life between his friends, girlfriend, work, and family, twenty-nine-year-old Shaun who is an electronic sales rep is plagued with no direction in life. After being dumped, he drowns his sorrows at his favorite pub and wakes up the next morning to the town he lives in being overrun with a zombie apocalypse, which he doesn’t notice because he’s hungover. In an attempt to save his mother, his newly ex girlfriend and himself, he and a friend set out on a dramatic and funny journey to overcome the zombie apocalypse. The 2004 British horror comedy stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Kate Ashfield and is directed by Edgar Wright.

Dead Snow

They say history repeats itself, and this time its in the form of Nazis in the state of zombies! A group of seven students arrive at a small cabin in Norway for Easter vacation. After a hitchhiker knocks on their door and tells them of the Nazis that occupied the area and abused and tortured the locals for many years long ago until the citizens began to fight back and killed many of the zombies. Weird dreams begin to haunt them and then all hell breaks loose. True to horror story fashion the students start doing things alone, like searching for one another, or opening ancient boxes that they shouldn't be touching and well, you can probably figure out the rest.

State of Emergency

Following a chemical plant explosion, Jim witnesses the death of his girlfriend and demands answers and safety. The explosion has turned the infected humans into flesh eating cannibals. Three survivors notice his efforts and offer him refuge with them where he bonds with Ix, a survivor who has lost her parents and falls gravely ill. To save her, Jim must fend off zombies in the outside world and then again back at the warehouse where he is living with several other survivors before being taken by Marines. State of Emergency, one of the best zombie movies on Netflix is directed, produced and written by Turner Clay and stars Jay Harden, Tori White, and Scott Lilly.

Zombie Hunter

The earth is mostly inhabited by zombies after Natas, a zombie-effects inducing drug has been consumed by almost all of the population. We meet The Hunter who is on a mission in which he hits a zombie with his truck and it reduces to purple goo. When he ventures into the land of the survivors, or those who have not been exposed to Natas, he meets another zombie slayer and the colony’s leader named Father Jesus and soon after a zombie battle ensues which results in deadly consequences. The survivors must flee in order to survive as they fight off a giant zombie. Zombie Hunter is a direct to video film that is now one of the best zombie movie on Netflix. It stars Danny Trejo, Martin Copping and Clare Niederpruem and was directed by Kevin King.

Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead

The sequel to Dead Snow, the horror comedy Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead follows Martin and his friends who garner the attention of Nazi zombies when they take their gold. This only spells disaster for the group who all wind up dead except for one, who then winds up with a zombie arm that kills people at will with a mind of its own. The nerdy Zombie Squad come in to help, and the group sets out to stop the Nazi zombies while encountering all sorts of problems on their way. Because this film and its prequel are zombie movies available on Netflix, you can watch them both without missing a beat.
