Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Behind Her Eyes, including the final twist and the truth about Adele and Rob.

Behind Her Eyes: A Love Triangle That Hides Something Much Darker

Behind Her Eyes initially looks like a complicated story about marriage, infidelity and obsession. Louise is a single mother living in London with her young son, Adam. Her life changes after she meets a mysterious man named David during a night out.

The attraction between them is immediate. They kiss, but David suddenly stops when he remembers that he is married.

Louise expects never to see him again.

The next morning, however, she arrives at the psychiatric clinic where she works part-time and discovers that David is her new boss. Even more awkwardly, she soon meets his beautiful but mysterious wife, Adele.

What begins as an uncomfortable coincidence slowly develops into a dangerous triangle involving Louise, David and Adele. But the real story has very little to do with an ordinary affair.

Behind their relationships is a supernatural secret involving lucid dreaming, astral projection and the ability to enter another person's body.

Louise Secretly Begins a Relationship With David

David and Louise initially agree to forget their kiss and maintain a professional relationship.

That arrangement does not last.

David is clearly unhappy in his marriage. He tells Louise that although he once loved Adele deeply, their relationship has become completely different.

Louise and David eventually begin an affair.

At the same time, Louise unexpectedly becomes friends with Adele.

Adele presents herself as a lonely woman trapped inside a controlling marriage. David regularly checks whether she is home, controls her medication and appears to monitor much of her life.

Because Louise only sees Adele's side of the story, she gradually starts believing that David may be dangerous.

Adele also asks Louise to keep their friendship secret from David.

That request eventually becomes extremely important.

Adele Teaches Louise How to Control Her Dreams

Louise suffers from terrifying nightmares and sleepwalking.

After discovering this, Adele gives her an old journal containing techniques for controlling dreams. The journal once belonged to Adele's former friend Rob, whom she met while staying at a rehabilitation facility when she was younger.

The technique begins simply.

Louise learns to count her fingers, focus on her surroundings and search for a mysterious door inside her dreams.

Eventually, she succeeds.

Instead of being helpless inside her nightmares, Louise can now control them.

But lucid dreaming is only the beginning.

Louise later discovers that consciousness can actually leave the physical body.

This is astral projection.

Once someone masters the technique, their consciousness can travel to places they already know. Louise eventually proves this to herself when she leaves her body and sees things happening elsewhere that she could not possibly have physically witnessed.

That discovery changes her understanding of Adele completely.

Adele Has Been Watching Louise and David

Louise finally realizes why Adele always seems to know things that nobody has told her.

Adele has been using astral projection to spy on people.

She can leave her body and observe David without him knowing she is there.

That means David and Louise's supposedly secret relationship was never really secret.

Adele knew.

Her friendship with Louise was also far less innocent than it appeared.

Louise starts understanding that Adele deliberately entered her life and manipulated her perception of David. Instead of being a helpless wife imprisoned by her husband, Adele is capable of controlling and frightening anyone she believes could take David away from her.

The same thing had apparently happened before.

What Happened With Marianne?

Louise investigates David and Adele's previous life and meets Marianne, a woman who once knew David.

Adele had suggested that David and Marianne were having an affair.

Marianne tells a very different story.

According to her, David regularly visited her café and talked about his unhappy marriage. Marianne encouraged him to leave Adele if the relationship was making him miserable.

Adele somehow discovered this conversation.

She confronted Marianne, threatened her and made it clear that she needed to stay away from David.

This revelation makes Louise realize that Adele has been manipulating everyone around David for years.

But an even bigger mystery remains.

What happened to Rob?

Who Was Rob?

Rob met Adele when they were both young and living at a rehabilitation facility.

They became extremely close.

Adele came from a wealthy family, while Rob had a far more difficult life and struggled with drug addiction. He was fascinated by Adele's wealth, beauty and lifestyle.

More importantly, Adele trusted him enough to reveal her greatest secret.

Astral projection.

After leaving rehab, Rob visited Adele at her family's estate in Scotland.

There he met David.

Rob quickly became fascinated with him.

His fascination eventually developed into something far more dangerous. Rob wanted the life Adele had—her wealth, her home and, most importantly, David.

Then Rob learned that astral projection had another possibility.

Two consciousnesses could potentially exchange bodies.

That discovery created the real nightmare at the center of Behind Her Eyes.

What Really Happened to Adele and Rob?

This is the twist that changes the entire series.

The woman viewers have known as Adele for most of the story is not actually Adele.

The real Adele died years earlier.

While Rob was staying at Adele's Scottish estate, he convinced her to experiment with switching bodies during astral projection.

Both left their physical bodies.

Adele's consciousness entered Rob's body.

Rob's consciousness entered Adele's body.

Adele believed the experiment would only be temporary.

Rob had no intention of switching back.

Once Rob found himself inside Adele's beautiful, wealthy body, he finally possessed everything he had wanted.

He then used drugs to incapacitate the real Adele, who was trapped inside Rob's body.

Rob killed her and disposed of Rob's physical body—with Adele's consciousness inside it—by throwing it into the deep well on the estate.

From that moment onward, the person everyone called Adele was actually Rob living inside Adele's body.

Why Was Fake Adele So Obsessed With David?

Rob's motivation explains almost everything strange about Adele's behavior.

Rob wanted David.

Taking Adele's body allowed him to have David, Adele's wealth and Adele's entire identity.

But there was one problem.

David gradually sensed that his wife had changed.

He could not understand exactly what had happened, but he knew the woman he lived with no longer felt like the Adele he once loved.

That is why David tells Louise that Adele seems like a completely different person.

He is more correct than he realizes.

She literally is someone else.

Whenever another woman becomes close to David, Rob becomes threatened. That explains the intimidation of Marianne and the elaborate manipulation of Louise.

Rob is terrified of losing the life he stole.

Why Couldn't David Simply Leave Adele?

Rob also had another way to control David.

The body in the Scottish well could connect David to a suspicious death because David's watch ended up there.

David had helped hide what he believed was Rob's accidental overdose and death.

He did not know the true supernatural story.

Whenever David tried to escape the marriage, fake Adele could use the secret surrounding Rob's death to keep him trapped.

Eventually David decides he cannot continue living this way.

He plans to go to the police and reveal everything he knows.

That decision forces Rob to take drastic action.

Why Does Adele Set the House on Fire?

Once fake Adele realizes that David is finally going to expose the secret surrounding Rob's death, the situation becomes desperate.

Rob knows his life as Adele is collapsing.

So he creates one final trap.

He writes a confession taking responsibility for Rob's supposed overdose and prepares the house to look like the scene of a suicide.

He then takes an overdose and starts a fire.

Louise receives a message and races to save Adele.

She cannot enter the burning house normally, so she makes the mistake Rob has been waiting for her to make.

Louise uses astral projection.

Her consciousness leaves her body and enters the house.

And that gives Rob exactly the opportunity he needs.

Behind Her Eyes Ending Explained: How Rob Takes Louise's Body

Louise believes she can save Adele by entering Adele's body while her own consciousness is outside her physical body.

But Rob has already planned the exchange.

When Louise's consciousness enters Adele's body, Rob's consciousness enters Louise's empty body.

Louise is now trapped inside Adele's drugged body.

Rob is inside Louise.

Louise realizes what has happened when it is already too late.

Her consciousness remains imprisoned inside Adele's dying body, while Rob escapes using Louise's healthy body.

The real Louise dies.

To everyone else, it appears that Adele has died in the fire while Louise survived.

But the woman who walks away looking like Louise is actually Rob.

The Final Twist: Rob Has Now Stolen Two Lives

The ending becomes even more disturbing when the complete timeline is revealed.

Years earlier:

Rob stole Adele's body.

Now:

Rob steals Louise's body.

Rob has therefore destroyed two women in order to remain close to David.

First, he took Adele's identity, wealth and relationship.

When David stopped loving "Adele" and fell in love with Louise, Rob simply changed bodies again.

Instead of fighting Louise for David, he became Louise.

It is a horrifyingly effective solution.

David believes Adele is finally gone and that he can start a new life with the woman he truly loves.

He has no idea that the same person he was trying to escape is standing beside him in a different body.

Why Adam Immediately Senses Something Is Wrong

One of the saddest parts of the ending involves Louise's son, Adam.

When fake Louise goes to collect him, her behavior is noticeably different.

The real Louise is affectionate and emotionally connected to her son. Rob may possess her body and memories of certain situations, but he cannot perfectly reproduce the relationship between a mother and her child.

Adam quickly senses that something about his mother has changed.

His reaction mirrors David's experience with Adele.

David spent years feeling that Adele was somehow no longer the woman he remembered.

Now Adam is experiencing the same thing with Louise.

The audience understands the truth.

Adam's mother is gone.

What Does the Ending of Behind Her Eyes Really Mean?

The ending turns the entire series into the story of Rob's obsession.

What initially appears to be a story about Adele desperately trying to keep her husband becomes something far darker.

The real Adele was never controlling David.

She was one of Rob's first victims.

The "Adele" manipulating Louise, spying through astral projection and threatening anyone who became close to David was Rob all along.

Louise unknowingly walks into exactly the same trap that destroyed Adele.

Both women trust someone who teaches them the secret of leaving their bodies.

Both eventually agree—or attempt—to place their consciousness inside another body.

And both lose everything because Rob understands the rules better than they do.

Who Is Alive at the End of Behind Her Eyes?

By the end, the identities are very different from the bodies viewers see.

The real Adele is dead. She died years earlier while trapped inside Rob's original body.

Rob's original body is dead. It was thrown into the well with Adele's consciousness inside it.

Louise is dead. Her consciousness becomes trapped inside Adele's body during the fire and overdose.

Adele's body is dead. Louise is inside it when it dies.

Rob is alive inside Louise's body.

David believes he is beginning a new life with Louise, but he has unknowingly reunited with Rob again.

That is the cruel genius of the ending.

David escaped Adele's face, but he never escaped the person who had been controlling his life all along.

Final Thoughts

Behind Her Eyes saves its most important revelation until the end and then forces viewers to reconsider almost everything that came before it.

Adele's strange behavior, her knowledge of David's movements, Rob's disappearance, the mysterious well and David's feeling that his wife had become another person all point toward the same truth.

Adele really did become another person.

Rob stole her body.

And when that body could no longer give him the future he wanted with David, he stole Louise's body as well.

The final image is disturbing because David believes his nightmare is finally over.

In reality, it has simply changed faces.
