Batman v Superman, Hillary's America Top 2017 Razzie Awards

All the talk of Tinseltown this weekend is of course about the Oscars, but along with the annual Academy Awards also comes the Razzies – the all-important representation of everything rotten in cinema from the last 12 months.

The documentary Hillary's America tied with blockbuster superhero sequel Batman v Superman for this year's worst achievements in film, earning four Razzies each.

The Razzie awards, which serve as a welcome counter-culture alternative to Hollywood's over-the-top Academy Awards ceremony, named Dinesh D'Souza's Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party as the worst film of 2016.

Dinesh D'Souza, best-selling author and a conservative commentator, won the award for Worst Actor for narrating his documentary and Worst Director together with Bruce Schooley. The Award for Worst Actress went to the person who portrayed Clinton in the film. (Amusingly, she's not even mentioned by name in the press release – Rebekah Turner.) The film didn't exactly perform well at the box office and received a truly rotten 96% Negative Rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also won four Razzies, including worst screen combo for Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill and Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel.

Co-Founded by UCLA film graduates and film industry veterans, John Wilson and Mo Murphy, the Razzies, or Golden Raspberry Awards to give them their full title, normally precede the corresponding Academy Awards ceremony by one day. The awards themselves are in the form of a "golf ball-sized raspberry" which sits atop a Super 8mm film reel, the whole of which is spray painted gold.

Approximately three dozen people came to the 1st Golden Raspberry Awards, which was held on March 31, 1981, at John Wilson's living room alcove in Los Angeles to honor the worst in film of the 1980 film season. The 2nd Golden Raspberry Awards had double the attendance and the 3rd awards ceremony had double this number. By the 4th Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony, CNN and two major wire services covered the event.

However, Wilson realized that by scheduling the Golden Raspberry Awards before the Academy Awards, the ceremony would get more press coverage: "We finally figured out you couldn't compete with the Oscars on Oscar night, but if you went the night before, when the press from all over the world are here and they are looking for something to do, it could well catch on," he told BBC News.

Sadly though, there was no traditional ceremony this year, normally held in the Palace Theater in downtown Los Angeles, instead a video was posted on YouTube and a press release was dispatched on Saturday morning, Pacific Time.

The annual Razzie Redeemer Award went to veteran actor-director Mel Gibson, who has returned to the Hollywood film fraternity with his war drama Hacksaw Ridge, a decade after a drunken anti-Semitic rant following a DUI arrest in Malibu in 2006. Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington and Luke Bracey, is nominated for six Oscars on Sunday, including Gibson for Best Director and Best Actor for Garfield.

Paying members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation vote to determine the recipients. For the 29th Razzie Awards in 2009, results were based on votes from approximately 650 journalists, cinema fans and professionals from the film industry. Voters participated from 45 US states and 19 other countries. To further prove the want for an anti-Oscar, this year the number of voting members has risen to 1,027 from 49 states and 25 countries.
