I BELIEVE IN GOTHAM, I BELIEVE IN HARVEY DENT, I BELIEVE IN JENSEN ACKLES.

Batman: The Long Halloween animated movies are based on the masterpiece graphic novel of the same name by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale. The story is set in the early days of Batman’s crime-fighting career. On Halloween night, a mysterious figure murders Johnny Viti, nephew of Carmine “The Roman” Falcone, the mob boss of Gotham City. Under the promise of only bending the law and not breaking it, Batman, Captain James Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent vow to work together to bring the Holiday Killer to justice.

I BELIEVE IN JIM GORDON

After voicing Red Hood in another DC animated film, Jensen Ackles of the Supernatural fame, is back to provide an impressively strong performance as Batman. Much like Dean Winchester, Ackles’s Batman is frighting at times, while still having a young naiveness, due to both characters growing up too fast. Batman fans may find it disappointing, that Jensen doesn’t differentiate his voice between Batman and alter ego Bruce Wayne. However, because of the filmmaker's choice of not including Batman’s inner-monologues found through the graphic novel, Jenson never really was given the opportunity to differentiate the voice.

I BELIEVE IN GOTHAM

Also returning to the DC Universe are Troy Baker, Alistair Duncan, and David Dastmalchian. Troy Baker once again delivers an amazing near-perfect impression of Mark Hamill’s classic Joker voice. Recently portraying as Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, David Dastmalchian voices both Calendar Man and the Penguin. Both performances are great, however reading the graphic novel as a kid, always imagine Calendar Man's voice very different than Dastmalchian’s Calendar Man. Even with all these stellar voice castings, it is Josh Duhamel’s performance as Harvey Dent that stands out the most. Duhamel shows much emotional range as Gotham’s White Knight slowly driven to become the murderous villain Two-Face.

I BELIEVE IN HARVEY DENT

The same animation style found in Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Justice Society: World War II, is here in The Long Halloween, entering a new era of DC Animated films. Fans might be disappointed in the fact that the filmmaker didn’t recreate Tim Sale's art style from the graphic novel. However, doing so would have been difficult for the animators to recreate with Tim Sale exaggerated, stylized, and at time even haunting art. Batman: The Animated Series from 1992 is shown to have influenced the artist when creating the movie, with its timeless gothic Art Deco visuals.

I BELIEVE IN GOTHAM

Despite some unnecessary changes and the removal of a few scenes, Batman: The Long Halloween animated film is still a faithful adaption of the graphic novel. Voice acting in the film was great, especially Josh Duhamel. The animation was very solid. All this leads to one thing,

I BELIEVE IN JENSEN ACKLES AS THE NEXT LIVE-ACTION BATMAN
