Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Balan: The Boy, including its ending and final twist.

Balan: The Boy Movie Explained

Balan: The Boy begins like a simple story about a mother trying to survive with her young son, but it gradually transforms into a psychological thriller about identity, trauma, crime, motherhood and survival.

From the moment the mother and her son leave prison, something feels unusual.

Sometimes they are Indu and Abhijeet. At another place, they become Mary and Bunny. Later, the mother uses names such as Vandana, Rajni and Shirley, while her son receives another new identity.

The question driving the mystery is simple:

Why does Balan’s mother keep changing their names?

The answer becomes the foundation for one of the movie’s biggest twists.

Why Does Balan’s Mother Keep Changing Their Identities?

After leaving prison, the mother refuses to follow the conventional life prepared for her. She rejects the NGO address given to her and begins travelling with her son.

Wherever they go, she creates a new story.

She changes their names, invents family histories and teaches Balan exactly what he must say if anyone questions him.

Whenever someone becomes too interested in their identity, asks for official documents or threatens their independence, she leaves.

Eventually, the movie reveals the emotional reason behind her behaviour.

While living with an elderly woman, Shirley tells what initially sounds like a fictional story.

A woman married a “demon” who abused her. Unable to tolerate the violence any longer—and afraid that her unborn child would eventually become trapped under the same man’s control—she killed him and buried him beneath a banana tree.

The woman was pregnant when she was imprisoned and later gave birth to her son.

The “story” is strongly presented as Shirley’s own past.

Her constant running is therefore not simply about escaping the police. She is desperately trying to prevent Balan from becoming controlled by another person.

Ironically, that is exactly what eventually happens.

Shirley and the Old Woman

Shirley eventually gets a job caring for an elderly woman living alone in a large house.

Their relationship begins badly. The old woman is aggressive, suspicious and even keeps a gun for protection.

Slowly, however, Shirley, Balan and the woman become an unusual family.

For perhaps the first time, Balan experiences something close to a stable childhood. He attends school, makes friends and stops constantly moving from one place to another.

The old woman also understands that Shirley is hiding something.

After hearing Shirley’s “demon” story, she realizes the truth without forcing her to confess.

Before dying, the old woman makes one final request: Shirley should stop running, remain in the house and educate Balan.

Shirley follows her wish and secretly buries her in the courtyard.

But their peaceful life does not last.

Why Does Shirley Shoot Shamnatha?

A dangerous person from Shirley’s prison past, Shamnatha, eventually finds her.

Shamnatha threatens Shirley’s independence and plans to use the house for criminal exploitation.

Shirley realizes that if she allows this person to stay, both her life and Balan’s future will once again fall under somebody else’s control.

She shoots Shamnatha.

Soon afterward, Shirley learns that members of the elderly woman’s family are unexpectedly coming to the house.

This appears to destroy everything she has built.

The story then shifts away from Shirley and focuses on Balan.

Why Is Balan Left Waiting Alone?

Earlier, Shirley had repeatedly taught Balan one important rule:

No matter how late she is, he must remain at the agreed meeting place because his mother will eventually come for him.

When Shirley fails to arrive after school, Balan obeys.

Police officer Pavithran eventually becomes involved.

Because Balan has lived under so many false identities, identifying him becomes extremely difficult. Even the school records lead to another boy’s identity.

Balan eventually disappears from police custody and accidentally enters an entirely different world.

How Did Balan Become Involved With Abbas?

After escaping, young Balan hides inside a vehicle connected to Abbas, a wanted criminal.

Balan helps Abbas recover a packet he had hidden while avoiding police.

When Abbas offers him money, Balan wants only one thing:

His mother.

Unable to find her, Abbas takes Balan with him.

Years pass.

Instead of receiving the ordinary childhood Shirley desperately wanted for him, Balan grows up surrounded by crime.

He eventually becomes deeply involved in Abbas’s criminal world.

This makes the story especially tragic: Shirley spent years changing identities to stop her son from becoming someone else’s servant, only for circumstances to pull him into exactly that kind of life.

Why Does Pavithran Hate Balan?

Pavithran’s hatred originates from events that happened when Balan was a child.

Balan’s disappearance contributed to problems between Pavithran and Cecily, damaging their relationship.

Years later, Pavithran still holds Balan responsible.

When the adult Balan finally returns searching for his mother, Pavithran exploits the fact that Balan barely has an official identity.

Balan eventually offers Pavithran a deal: he will help capture the wanted gangster Abbas if Pavithran reveals where his mother is.

Balan keeps his side of the bargain.

Abbas is arrested.

But Pavithran has one final cruel surprise waiting for him.

Balan: The Boy Ending Explained

Pavithran takes Balan to a woman he claims is his mother.

Balan approaches her emotionally, believing his long search is finally over.

But when the woman turns around, she is not Shirley.

She is the mentally unstable woman whose identity card Shirley had found years earlier.

That revelation exposes Shirley’s brilliant escape plan.

When Shirley discovered that people were coming to the elderly woman’s house, she brought the mentally ill woman there and placed Shirley’s identification on her.

She then arranged the situation so authorities would believe that woman was Shirley.

While everyone thought Shirley had been arrested, the real Shirley escaped through the back of the house.

For years, police had been following the wrong woman.

Was Balan’s Mother Alive?

Yes. Shirley was alive.

This is the movie’s biggest reveal.

After discovering Pavithran’s deception, Balan remembers the promise his mother made when he was a child.

He returns to the same place where she once told him to wait for her.

Balan sits there.

Then someone places a hand on his shoulder.

It is his mother.

After all those years, Shirley finally returns.

Her promise was true:

No matter how late she was, she would eventually come to pick up her son.

What Does the Final Scene Mean?

The final conversation perfectly completes the movie’s central idea.

Balan asks his mother:

What will our next story be?

Instead of finally revealing a permanent identity, Shirley whispers another name and another story.

Mother and son then leave together once again.

The ending suggests that their cycle of reinvention has not completely ended.

Throughout the film, names are not simply names. For Shirley and Balan, identities are survival tools.

Every new identity allows them to escape another prison—sometimes a literal prison, sometimes an abusive relationship, sometimes society and sometimes their own past.

The reunion is therefore both emotional and unsettling.

Balan finally finds his mother, but rather than returning to a normal life, the two begin another journey behind another identity.

Final Thoughts

Balan: The Boy ultimately turns its mystery into a story about a mother doing everything possible to protect her child.

Shirley lies, disappears, manipulates identities and commits violent acts, but almost every major decision is connected to the same fear: losing control over her son’s future.

The tragedy is that despite all her precautions, Balan still grows up inside the criminal world she tried to keep him away from.

Yet the final scene gives their relationship one last emotional victory.

Years may have passed, identities may have changed and countless false stories may have been created, but one promise survived them all:

Balan’s mother came back for him.

And just like that, one story ends while another begins.
