Bad Boys: Ride Or Die Hit Theaters But Was It A Hit Or A Miss

A look at Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's return to the Bad Boys series.

Summer's here and it's time for the box office hits of the summer, if there's such a thing anymore. Surely, you can't go wrong with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reuniting as Miami Detectives Lowrey and Burnett. So, was it worth seeing? I'm going to try my best not to spoil too much.

When we last saw the favorite Miami heroes, they'd just finished up business with the witch that Mike "f'd" without a a condom. The son Mike didn't know he had was in custody, in part for attempting to murder his father, and the gang was all gathered around for Mike's first time babysitting.

Fast forward, to Mike's getting married to his physical therapist. Marcus takes a trip to the other side, where he learns some things from Captain Howard, and there's a storm coming. This is all in the first fifteen minutes of the movie, which should tell you that they've kept the working formula from past outings.

When Mike and Marcus find out that Armando can identify the man who's smeared their beloved former captain's name, they arrange a transfer to a more convenient location so Mike's son can help them. Things go awry, and as Armando told them in the trailer, they're not great fugitives. As they work their way back to their loyal friends to find the evidence to clear their names as well as that of Captain Howard, they have to avoid the shadowy cabal of mercenaries led by Eric Dane.

As the two put it all together, some intriguing plot twists come up, most notable of them possibly being a scene with Reggie. Young Reggie, now a Marine, must step up in Marcus and Mike's absence as the Burnett women are targeted as leverage. Who wants to bet when he was just a wide-eyed teen coming to date Marcus's daughter, Mike, and Marcus never could have imagined he'd kill more people than they usually do in a whole movie in just three minutes?

After everything that Armando did during his first appearance, is there any way he can come out of this unscathed, or is it back to prison or worse for Mike's son? Even Marcus warns Mike that he's going to have to make a terrible choice at one point.

Everybody loves a good comeback story and even the murderous son of a cartel witch can redeem themselves if they are given a chance. But you'll have to see the movie to find out. Nope, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

This is a different Bad Boys, but it's given Will Smith and Martin Lawrence another round in the spotlight. After Smith's unfortunate debacle at the Oscars, this might be his best opportunity to work his way back into the public's good side, as well as Hollywood's.

Overall, Bad Boys Ride or Die feels like it could be the end, and most people probably would be alright with that. If it is, fans are likely to go away from the theater with one last good memory of the series as it doesn't miss much of a beat from the earlier two installments. Smith and Lawrence are still great and have that "sibling" or "buddy cop" chemistry that just works well.

Is it a perfect movie? No. Is it a good summer movie that is fun to watch? Absolutely! Overall, I had no real complaints with the film and hope it does well, which according to the 56 million dollar opening weekend it was looking at before Sunday's totals, it seems to be on track to do just that.

Until next time, which with the limited run of really interesting movies coming out, may be Deadpool and Wolverine.
