Growing up in a world of fantasy in order to get away from the darkness that was my real world, that still IS the real world; was never easy. I think I can vouch for a lot of us other worldly folk, out in the realms of imagination, when I say that. Sometimes it is all we have when real life can’t seem to give us the desire to dream. Sometimes the real world is far too much to handle with the hostility it endeavors. Sometimes we need an escape, even for a little bit.. so we delve into the fantasy worlds that make us, us. The worlds that really feel like home, that take us in and nourish us into something happy and forgiving. Worlds that seem more real, then not. For me, that world is Avatar, or Pandora

Pandora, to me, is what our real world could have been. A flourishing planet of powerful ecosystems, where we are one with nature, and nature is one with us. A connection so surreal, we would die if anyone were to harm it. We would die FOR it. We lost touch with our true guidance, we lost touch with nature and it shatters my heart we could ever let the world come to this. When it could have been so, so much more, like the world of Avatar before the slaughter. Ring a bell? Does this not sound familiar? Deja-vu, perhaps? Avatar, rein-acted that in such a way, it should have touched our worlds soul entirely.

Its not just a tree. It was never just a tree. It is a full, living life form, connecting all their is to be connected. It’s underground network speaks to the animals, it speaks to the indigenous Na’vi people of Pandora, and it speaks to all living things on the planet. It sends signals of warnings, love, laughter. And believe it or not, our real world has these underground networks too. We don’t see, or hear them because we are no longer connected to them. Not like the Na’vi.

It’s hard to describe in words, what a beautiful planet Pandora is. It reminds me of how I feel when I am deep in the forest of my own countries vast ecosystems. Connecting with my own existence, while nature speaks to me through waves. I may not hear or see what she tells me, but I feel that connection deep down. It’s home, and so I treat it as such.

As someone who is indigenous, I feel a strong connection with the Na’vi people on a personal and spiritual level. Watching Avatar and diving into that world, feels real. They may have dragons, but my spirit animal is a hawk. I’ve even had spiritual awakenings, dreams, that I rode on my giant hawks back. We soared like that of Neytiri and Jake Sully as they road the backs of their dragons. It’s hard finding connections like this in the real world, but its possible. They connect with all their animals as much as I connect with mine. Perhaps not by strands of hair like they do, but by heart and mind.

Avatar, Pandora, Na’vi, these are what make up my fantasy world. Because it is so beyond believable that this could have been our real world if we didn’t let our planet down. As their planet got torn to shreds by the government, only reminds me of our own. It hits home, but the beauty of it is what makes the fight worth it, defend what you love and never let it go. Earth is my Pandora, and I’ll die fighting for it.
