Aroopi Ending Explained: Padmini’s Spirit, Niranjan’s Mental Illness and the Final Car Twist

Aroopi begins with the disturbing legend of Padmini, a beautiful young woman who once lived in an old ancestral mansion.

Padmini was in love with Soorya Namboodiri, but the cruel Dathan Raja became obsessed with her. When Padmini rejected him, Dathan tried to force himself on her. During the confrontation, he killed her.

Padmini died with her desire to marry Soorya unfulfilled. Her restless spirit soon became dangerous and began attacking people in the village.

Soorya, who knew tantric rituals, finally managed to trap Padmini's spirit inside a specially prepared idol. The object was hidden inside the old mansion so that nobody could ever release her again.

For many years, the secret remained buried.

Then two thieves changed everything.

How Is Padmini Released?

After hearing that an extremely valuable idol is hidden inside the abandoned mansion, two thieves break into the property.

They eventually discover the object inside a box. It is wrapped in red cloth and protected with amulets, but greed gets the better of them. They remove the protections without understanding their purpose.

By doing so, they accidentally release Padmini's spirit.

Soon afterward, a man is mysteriously killed near the mansion's pond.

Meanwhile, Niranjan, a young IT professional living in the city, has already been suffering from disturbing dreams, headaches and strange visions connected to Padmini.

After learning about the murder at his family's ancestral property, Niranjan leaves the city and returns to the village.

Why Is Niranjan Connected to Padmini?

Niranjan discovers that Dathan Raja, the man responsible for Padmini's death, was actually one of his ancestors.

That makes Niranjan part of the same bloodline Padmini had reason to hate.

His uncle Divakar warns him that Padmini may attempt to manipulate him before killing him. He gives Niranjan a blessed ring capable of weakening her supernatural powers.

But matters become complicated when Padmini appears before Niranjan in human form.

Instead of immediately attacking him, she behaves affectionately.

Niranjan becomes fascinated by her.

The two spend time together, travel outside the village and begin behaving almost like a couple. Niranjan gradually starts believing that Padmini genuinely loves him.

Why Does Niranjan Put the Ring on Padmini?

Divakar repeatedly warns Niranjan that Padmini's affection may be part of her plan.

Eventually, Niranjan follows his uncle's instructions and slips the enchanted ring onto Padminini's finger.

Her powers weaken immediately.

Divakar and the others begin a ritual intended to imprison Padmini's spirit inside the idol once again.

However, the same thieves return and steal the idol in the middle of the ritual.

Padmini then tricks one of them into removing the ring from her finger, restoring her powers.

She returns to the mansion in a terrifying form and begins hunting everyone inside.

Niranjan eventually manages to recover the ring and places it back on Padmini's finger. With her powers weakened again, Divakar completes the ritual.

Padmini's spirit is finally trapped inside the idol.

At first, this appears to be the end of the haunting.

It isn't.

Aroopi Ending Explained: Why Is Padmini Still With Niranjan?

The final scenes completely change how we understand Niranjan.

After everything is over, Niranjan locks the mansion and drives away.

Shockingly, Padmini is sitting beside him in the car.

It initially seems that the ritual failed and Padmini somehow escaped again.

But the movie then reveals another important piece of information.

Back in the city, Niranjan's girlfriend Sakshi visits his doctor while trying to understand his increasingly strange behaviour.

The doctor reveals that Niranjan has been receiving treatment for a psychological condition that causes him to imagine things and experience them as if they were real.

This explains why Niranjan had been seeing Padmini even before her spirit was released from the idol.

Is Padmini Really Sitting in the Car?

No — at least according to the movie's final reveal, the Padmini sitting beside Niranjan in the car is not physically there.

Niranjan stops the car and begins talking to her.

But when the perspective changes, the passenger seat is empty.

He is talking to nobody.

The supernatural Padmini may have been successfully sealed inside the idol, but the Padmini living inside Niranjan's mind remains with him.

That is the real final twist of Aroopi.

Was Padmini Real or Just Niranjan's Imagination?

This is where the ending becomes especially interesting.

The story suggests that the supernatural events at the mansion were real. Padmini's spirit was genuinely released and later trapped again through the ritual.

However, not every appearance of Padmini necessarily came from the ghost.

Niranjan had already been experiencing visions and dreams connected to her.

So the film combines two different forms of horror:

the actual supernatural spirit of Padmini and Niranjan's psychological perception of Padmini.

Even after the ghost is defeated, Niranjan's mind continues creating her.

What Does the Final Scene Mean?

The ending suggests that defeating a supernatural threat does not automatically free Niranjan from his internal struggle.

The family may have successfully imprisoned Padmini's spirit, but Niranjan still believes she is beside him.

That leaves the audience with an unsettling question:

If Niranjan can no longer distinguish his imagination from reality, has the haunting really ended for him?

In that sense, the final empty passenger seat is arguably more disturbing than another traditional ghost appearance.

Aroopi Ending Explained — Final Verdict

Aroopi initially presents itself as a supernatural revenge story involving an old family curse, black magic and a vengeful spirit.

The ending adds another layer.

Padmini's real spirit is apparently trapped again, but Niranjan continues seeing and talking to her because his mind has created its own version of Padmini.

The ghost may be gone.

For Niranjan, Padmini is not.
