April Ludgate's Mysterious Late Appearance

Some of you may have noticed that my previous article on the 'Parks and Recreation' characters did not include April...hmm...

Still from Parks and Recreation

Not surprisingly, April was the most difficult character for me to type.

Is she a thinking type or feeling type?

Do her more emotionally motivated actions result from Fi (Introverted Feeling) or an inferior and/or aspirational Fe (Extroverted Feeling)?

Here is what I've concluded...

April Ludgate — ISFP "The Adventurer"

I would say April is absolutely an introvert, just to get the easy letter out of the way. April hates most people, and, when she likes someone, it is for something weird and/or disturbing about that person because those characteristics often display the most genuine and honest people are capable of being.

April is primarily influenced by her Fi (Introverted Feeling); Her actions are based on what she wants to do and when she wants to do it. However, she is also occasionally motivated by a sense of what is wrong or stupid about the world, finding herself annoyed enough to fix the problem herself. Even so, she genuinely does care about the other characters, though it can be difficult to see her as caring sometimes.

There are countless actions she takes especially on Leslie's behalf, or Andy's, but she even gives selflessly to the characters who annoy her more: in her own way.

For instance, when Jerry has to witness his daughter and Chris dancing quite provocatively at the Halloween party, April avenges his moment of grief at the end of the episode by swiping Chris's car keys and tossing them into a garbage dumpster. That, and Chris was annoying her anyway: so it was a win-win, killing two birds with one set of keys.

April is also incredibly unpredictable, as SP types often are. The main predictable thing about April is her adventurous side, especially in the area of dark and morbid interests. Her favorite music often depresses Andy because she likes delving into melancholy and angry places where no ENFP (Andy's type) should probably ever go!

She is spontaneous and enjoys her life, however unorthodox it may seem to the rest of the world. She actually takes it as a compliment if someone labels her as weird because she refuses to acknowledge social rules and traditions as anything but stupid and boring.

Discerning whether April is a feeling type or thinking type proved challenging, but I believe most of her actions are fueled by her primary function being Introverted Feeling. Cold and callous as she may behave toward people, it isn't because she doesn't dwell in her emotions very frequently. Ben is cold and logical, for instance, but it is because feelings are far less essential to his type. They don't come up as often. On the other hand, April is entirely motivated by how she feels, and she acts on those feelings, regardless of what everyone else thinks of her.

April is a fascinating character, and it seems fitting that she earned her own late appearance in my discussion of the Parks and Recreation MBTI.

...

Okay, I'll confess: I actually totally forgot to put her in the article, but it somehow fit perfectly that April would arrive creepily late, and in the middle of the night at that (it's just after midnight that I'm finishing up this article)!

Thanks so much for reading! I'm sorry I forgot April before!
