Appan

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Appan.

Some movies entertain you for two hours and disappear from your mind. Others leave behind an uncomfortable question that stays with you long after the credits roll. Appan belongs to the second category.

Released in 2022, Appan is a Malayalam tragedy-drama directed by Maju. The film stars Sunny Wayne as Njoonju and Alencier Ley Lopez as his bedridden father, Ittychan.

At its heart, Appan is not a murder mystery or a conventional thriller. It is a disturbing story about a family trapped under the control of one toxic man and the emotional damage that continues from one generation to the next.

Appan Movie Story Explained

Njoonju lives with his wife Rosy, his son, his mother Kuttyamma, and his father Ittychan.

Ittychan is partially paralysed and confined to a bed, but his physical condition has done nothing to change his cruel personality. He insults his family, humiliates his wife, manipulates his children and constantly reminds everyone that the house and property belong to him.

Instead of feeling sympathy for him, almost everyone around Ittychan secretly waits for his death.

That sounds shocking at first, but as the movie gradually reveals his past, we begin to understand why.

Kuttyamma has spent years suffering inside the marriage. Njoonju has grown up carrying the shame created by his father's actions. Even people in the village have old scores to settle with Ittychan.

Njoonju desperately wants a peaceful life, especially for his mother, wife and son. Yet he remains trapped between his responsibility as a son and his hatred for the man who made his childhood miserable.

Why Does Everyone Hate Ittychan?

Ittychan represents something more frightening than a typical movie villain.

He is a man who has spent years exploiting the people closest to him while using family, property and dependence as weapons.

Even after becoming bedridden, he continues controlling everyone emotionally.

Whenever Njoonju becomes angry, Ittychan screams that his son is trying to kill him. He threatens to remove Njoonju from his inheritance. He insults Kuttyamma and creates conflict between family members.

The house eventually stops feeling like a home. It becomes a prison.

Njoonju even considers leaving everything behind rather than continuing to live under his father's shadow.

Who Is Sheela in Appan?

Sheela becomes one of the most important characters in Appan.

Ittychan desperately wants her brought into the house. Initially, this creates even more tension, particularly for Kuttyamma.

However, Sheela's presence eventually exposes another side of Ittychan's past.

She has her own painful history connected to him. As she spends more time with the family, she also realizes that Njoonju, Rosy and Kuttyamma are not like Ittychan. They are victims of the same man she has reasons to hate.

This changes everything.

Instead of seeing the entire family as her enemy, Sheela begins separating Ittychan's sins from the people who have suffered because of him.

Why Is Kuriakose Coming for Ittychan?

As Christmas approaches, another threat enters the story.

Kuriakose is finally coming for Ittychan.

His arrival terrifies Ittychan because he knows that his past has finally caught up with him. The fearless and abusive man who spent years controlling everyone suddenly becomes desperate to survive.

Njoonju faces one of the movie's biggest moral conflicts.

He hates his father and has wished for his death countless times, yet when someone actually arrives to kill Ittychan, Njoonju still tries to protect him.

That moment tells us a lot about Njoonju.

Despite everything Ittychan has done, Njoonju does not want to become the same kind of man.

Appan Ending Explained

The climax takes place on Christmas night.

Kuriakose arrives at the house seeking revenge. Njoonju attempts to stop him while a terrified Ittychan locks himself inside his room.

Then Ittychan does something that finally destroys whatever tiny connection remained between him and his family.

Instead of protecting his son, he is willing to sacrifice Njoonju and the women around him if doing so can save his own life.

For Sheela, this becomes the breaking point.

She has already endured Ittychan's cruelty and carries her own painful reasons for hating him. After seeing that he is still willing to destroy other people's lives just to protect himself, she finally acts.

Sheela kills Ittychan.

Kuriakose sees that the man he came to confront is already dead and leaves.

Sheela is prepared to accept responsibility for what she has done, but Njoonju makes a different decision.

He cleans his father's body, prepares him for the funeral and decides that everyone will be told Ittychan died naturally.

After years of fear, humiliation and emotional imprisonment, Ittychan's control over the household is finally over.

Why Did Sheela Kill Ittychan?

Sheela does not kill Ittychan because of one sudden argument.

Her action is the culmination of years of exploitation, humiliation, anger and revenge.

More importantly, she has finally understood that destroying Njoonju's entire family would only create more victims.

Ittychan is the true source of their suffering.

Her final act therefore becomes both personal revenge and the violent conclusion of a cycle that nobody else had been able to break.

What Does the Ending of Appan Really Mean?

The most powerful part of the Appan ending is that Ittychan's death is not presented simply as a victory.

The family is finally free, but the emotional damage he created does not disappear instantly.

Njoonju has spent much of his life terrified that he might become like his father. At one point, even Kuttyamma becomes frightened by her son's anger. That moment forces Njoonju to understand how trauma can pass from one generation to another.

The real challenge is therefore not simply escaping Ittychan.

It is making sure another Ittychan is never created.

The film's depiction of a dysfunctional household and intergenerational trauma was also highlighted by contemporary reviews of the movie.

Final Thoughts

Appan works because its villain is not a supernatural monster or criminal mastermind.

He is a father.

A husband.

A man who should have protected his family but instead became the biggest source of fear inside his own home.

The movie raises a painful question: What happens when the person who is supposed to protect a family becomes the reason that family needs protection?

That is what makes Appan so uncomfortable and memorable.

Its ending may be violent, but the deeper message is about abuse, silence, inherited trauma and the consequences of allowing destructive behaviour to continue for too long.

For Njoonju and his family, Ittychan's death closes one terrible chapter. What matters next is whether they can finally build a life that is no longer controlled by his shadow.
