Anomie: The Equation of Death – Full Story and Ending Explained

Anomie: The Equation of Death is a Malayalam crime thriller built around forensic investigation, psychological trauma, serial deaths, revenge and a mysterious scientific experiment. The film was released in February 2026 and stars Bhavana as forensic expert Zaara Philip, while Rahman plays investigating police officer Ghibran.

What initially looks like a missing-person investigation slowly develops into a much darker mystery involving multiple suspicious deaths.

And by the time the final truth is revealed, the movie is no longer simply asking who the killer is. It also asks whether justice and revenge can ever become the same thing.

The following explanation is based on the story and ending presented in the supplied movie recap.

Who Is Zaara Philip?

Zaara is a forensic expert who spends most of her life working and taking care of her younger brother, Ziyan.

Years earlier, Zaara and Ziyan lost their parents in a terrible car accident. Ziyan believes that the accident happened because of him, and the guilt leaves him psychologically vulnerable.

Zaara therefore becomes extremely protective of her brother.

Ziyan is receiving psychiatric treatment, and Zaara knows that his mental condition can deteriorate quickly. So when she comes home one day and discovers that Ziyan is missing, she immediately realizes that something may be seriously wrong.

She receives a voice message in which Ziyan says that he has gone to his friend Salman’s pet shop.

But when Zaara reaches the shop, Salman tells her something terrifying:

Ziyan never came there.

Ziyan Goes Missing

Zaara and her boyfriend Alby begin searching everywhere Ziyan might have gone.

When they fail to locate him, Zaara approaches the police.

The missing-person investigation is assigned to Inspector Ghibran, but he initially treats the case casually. Zaara repeatedly warns the police that Ziyan is psychologically vulnerable and that his disappearance cannot be treated like an ordinary missing-person case.

Then the situation becomes much worse.

A body is discovered outside the city.

The victim is identified as Ziyan.

Zaara is devastated, but the forensic examination soon gives her a reason to question what really happened to her brother.

The Chemical That Changes the Investigation

Doctors discover a suspicious chemical in Ziyan’s body.

More importantly, the same substance had previously been found in the body of another young man named Neeraj.

Another suspicious death soon follows, and once again similar forensic evidence appears.

Zaara now believes the deaths are connected.

What police initially considered separate suicides may actually be carefully planned murders designed to look like suicides.

Zaara confronts Ghibran and warns him that his failure to investigate properly could cost another person their life.

Her anger eventually pushes Ghibran to take the case seriously.

Why Was Ghibran So Careless?

The movie also explains why Ghibran had become emotionally detached from police work.

Years earlier, a young couple approached him for protection because their families opposed their relationship. Ghibran wanted to protect them, but political and administrative pressure prevented him from doing so.

The couple were eventually killed.

Ghibran blamed himself.

The tragedy destroyed his faith in the system and transformed him from a committed officer into someone who treated investigations as routine paperwork.

Zaara’s case finally forces him to confront that past.

He realizes that ignoring another warning could lead to another preventable death.

The Serial Killer Connection

Zaara discovers tyre marks near the place where Ziyan was last seen.

Ghibran orders investigators to compare the marks with evidence from the other suspicious deaths.

The result is crucial.

Similar tyre marks appear at multiple crime scenes.

CCTV footage eventually connects the vehicle to an ATM cash van, strengthening the theory that one person—or one organized plan—is behind the deaths.

Another connection soon appears.

Neeraj, Ziyan and the other victims had all been receiving psychological treatment.

More surprisingly, they were connected to the same psychiatrist.

Who Is Prasad?

The psychiatrist remembers a man named Prasad who frequently appeared at the clinic and secretly gathered information about patients.

Police eventually find and arrest him.

But Prasad is not the mastermind.

During interrogation, he reveals that an unknown person paid him to collect information about selected psychiatric patients.

Prasad would leave their records at predetermined locations, after which somebody else would collect them.

Money was transferred into his account after each assignment.

The real killer had therefore created a system that kept him several steps away from the victims.

Alby’s Death Creates a New Mystery

While the investigation continues, Zaara receives another devastating shock.

Her boyfriend Alby is found dead.

The same mysterious chemical is discovered in his body.

But there is an important difference.

Previous victims had psychological problems that could help the killer disguise their deaths as suicides.

Alby had no such history.

Why would the killer suddenly change the pattern?

The answer becomes one of the biggest twists in Anomie.

What Is the “Equation of Death”?

Zaara discovers that approximately 11 years earlier, a medical student named Jessy had died under mysterious circumstances.

The same chemical was reportedly connected with her death.

Zaara visits Jessy’s family and learns about a strange research project called:

Equation of Death.

Jessy had been studying what happens inside the human brain near the moment of death.

Zaara then visits Jessy’s former medical college and discovers that another researcher was involved.

His name was Sanjay.

Sanjay had come from Canada to study neuroscience and worked with Jessy on the experiment.

After Jessy died, the project was stopped.

Sanjay disappeared.

Now the pieces finally begin fitting together.

Is Sanjay the Killer?

Yes.

Ghibran’s investigation eventually leads police to an isolated three-storey house.

An ATM cash vehicle parked nearby matches the tyre evidence recovered from the crime scenes.

Inside the building, police discover patient files, medical documents and research material connected to the Equation of Death project.

Sanjay attempts to escape, while explosives planted inside the building destroy much of the evidence.

However, Zaara and Ghibran eventually help stop him, and Sanjay is taken into custody.

But his confession reveals that the mystery is much bigger than anybody expected.

Why Was Sanjay Killing People?

Sanjay explains that the Equation of Death experiment was designed to understand the human brain immediately before death.

The researchers wanted to know what a person experiences during their final moments and whether understanding death scientifically could eventually help humanity defeat it.

Jessy had originally volunteered for the experiment.

But she died during the research.

Instead of stopping, Sanjay became obsessed with completing the project.

He began selecting psychologically vulnerable people as human subjects.

In his distorted thinking, people who had lost hope were acceptable experimental subjects.

Ghibran rejects Sanjay’s justification completely.

Scientific research, however ambitious, cannot justify taking innocent lives.

But Sanjay still has one final secret.

Who Was the Third Member of the Equation of Death Project?

Ghibran asks Sanjay a crucial question.

If Jessy and Sanjay were involved in the original research, who was the third person?

Sanjay reveals the name:

Alby.

Zaara’s boyfriend had been connected to the Equation of Death project from the beginning.

And suddenly Ziyan’s final voice message becomes incredibly important.

Was Alby Involved in Ziyan’s Death?

Yes.

Zaara had repeatedly listened to Ziyan’s final voice message.

A sound expert discovered that another person could faintly be heard responding to Ziyan.

Ziyan appeared comfortable with that person, suggesting that he knew him.

The person was Alby.

That means Ziyan trusted Alby enough to go with him.

The devastating truth is that the man Zaara trusted most was involved in the conspiracy that led to her brother’s death.

But the film still has one more twist.

Who Actually Killed Alby?

Zaara killed Alby.

After identifying his voice in Ziyan’s final recording, Zaara realizes that her boyfriend had betrayed both her and her brother.

Instead of immediately informing police, she creates her own plan.

Zaara kills Alby and carefully makes his death appear connected to the same series of murders committed during the Equation of Death experiments.

That explains why Alby’s death never perfectly matched the other victims.

He was not another victim selected by Sanjay.

He was Zaara’s revenge.

Anomie Ending Explained: Did Ghibran Know Zaara Killed Alby?

This is the final twist.

Ghibran eventually understands what Zaara did.

He realizes that Alby’s death does not fit Sanjay’s normal pattern and figures out that Zaara killed him after discovering his role in Ziyan’s death.

However, Ghibran does not expose her.

His own painful history has taught him how complicated the relationship between law, justice and revenge can become.

So he keeps the truth to himself.

Sanjay is arrested, the Equation of Death conspiracy is exposed, and the official case appears solved.

But Zaara walks away carrying a secret.

What Does the Ending of Anomie Mean?

The ending is deliberately morally uncomfortable.

Sanjay believes murder can be justified in the name of scientific progress.

Zaara believes Alby deserves punishment for betraying Ziyan.

Ghibran is supposed to represent the law, yet he ultimately chooses not to reveal Zaara’s crime.

All three characters therefore cross moral boundaries for completely different reasons.

That is what makes the ending more interesting than a simple killer reveal.

Sanjay represents obsession disguised as science.

Zaara represents revenge disguised as justice.

Ghibran represents law compromised by empathy.

The film ends without providing an easy moral answer.

Instead, it leaves viewers with a disturbing question:

When the legal system cannot repair what has been lost, who gets to decide what justice really means?

Anomie: The Equation of Death Final Verdict

Anomie: The Equation of Death combines forensic investigation, psychological mystery, serial killings and a revenge twist into one interconnected story.

The strongest revelation is not simply that Sanjay is behind the Equation of Death murders. It is the discovery that Alby was secretly connected to the experiment—and that Zaara had already discovered his betrayal and killed him herself.

Ghibran knowing the truth but choosing silence completes the movie’s central conflict between justice, revenge and the law.

For viewers who enjoy Malayalam crime thrillers, forensic mysteries and movies with multiple ending twists, Anomieoffers plenty to discuss after the final scene.

What do you think—was Ghibran right to protect Zaara, or should he have followed the law and revealed the truth?
