An Idea of All Time

Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings

My husband and I decided that we would plan the next 4 and half or so years of quality time. He listens to a podcast called the worst idea of all time, the hosts watch a decidedly bad movie every week for a year. Now I am aware that I do not have that kind of will power. So our version is a tad more mild than that. We will be choosing a mediocre movie and to make it more interesting we will be choosing movies with numbers in the title. We are starting with Shang Chi: Legend of the 10 Rings. And we will be watching for as many months as there are numbers. We are almost done with our first month so here is a quick recap of what we have commented on as well links to the episode if you are interested.

If you are unfamiliar Shang Chi: The Legend of the 10 Rings is a Marvel movie released in 2021. It had about a $200 million budget and it grossed barely over that at $207 million. There is theoretically going to be a sequel, though Marvel has rearranged things since the strike and since internet reactions to newer films so whether or not that is still the plan is really up in the air. The last we heard about the film was November of last year, and what we heard is that there will be no movie till at least 2026. So even if a Shang Chi sequel is still in the world it will not be for a while.

Mostly we have just been critiquing the movie. This might not be entirely fair but let's be honest, the movie isn’t great and it really only gets worse the more you watch it. Now the big things are the lack of structure, the unbearable amount of flashbacks and the entire lack of character development. Now we of course go into more detail but we have covered all of the objective, critical parts of the film. Now on the upside we love the fight choreography and a good amount of the cinematography and we love (most) of the casting.

Now I recently learned that the movie has a 92% audience score on rotten tomatoes which is actually insane. If that doesn’t prove that the general public is not to be trusted in matters of quality of art then I don’t know what does. I am sorry but this movie is so forgettable and even on first watch, at the movies most tolerable there is no version of that first experience that results in a 92% approval. Nope. 67% at the absolute highest, anyone saying otherwise does not watch enough movies and can not be trusted for recommendations.

Well we are done with April and we will be doing this movie until the end of January. So if you feel so inclined please join us on this very tedious adventure. We are coming up with ways to keep it interesting, including turning all of the films we decide to watch into drinking games. All bad movies are better when you are a little bit buzzed. Even if you just want to play along that would be super fun, we are also hopefully going to have some guests on soon. We just want to spread the love because we have 9 more months of this movie and we don’t want to use all of our fun ideas up top and then have another 7 months of us just talking and ranting. So if you have any ideas for us they are more than welcome.
