Rajesh Khanna (born: 29 December 1942 - died: 18 July 2012) was an Indian Bollywood actor, director and producer. He made many Hindi films and also entered politics. He was a Congress Party MP from New Delhi Lok Sabha seat for five years 1991-96. He later retired from politics.

Introduction

Rajesh Khanna was born on 29 December 1942 Amritsar, Punjab, British India. He was an Indian Bollywood actor, director and producer and a politician.

He acted in a total of 180 films and 163 feature films, playing the lead role in 128 films, in addition to a double role in 22, in 17 short films. He acted in 15 consecutive hits in the period 1969 to 1971, and set a never-ending record.

Rajesh khanna gave 15 consecutive solo superhit films in 1969-72 like Sacha Jhootha, Ittfaq, Do Raaste, Bandhan, Doli, Safar, Kati Patang, Aradhana, Aan Milo Sajna, Anand, Dushman, Mehboob Ki Mehndi, Khamoshi, Haathi Mere Saathi.

In 1972-1975, Amar Prem, Dil Daulat Duniya, Joru Ka Ghulam, Shehzada, Apna Desh, Anurag, Daag, Aznabi, Prem Nagar, Roti and Films like Prem Kahani were also successful.

He made many successful films from 1980 -1991 like Maha Chor, Chhaliya Babu, Bhola Bhala, Karma succeeded in 1976-78. He made a comeback in 1979 with Amar Deep. He did many successful movies during 1979-1991.

Rajesh Khanna's Debut

Aakhri Khat was the debut film of Rajesh Khanna. Aakhri Khat film directed by Chetan Anand, followed by Raaz, directed by Ravindra Dave, both of which were a part of his predetermined prize for winning the All-India United Producers' Talent Competition. Rajesh Khanna's debut film Aakhri Khat was India's official Oscar entry in 1967.

Rajesh Khanna fell in love with the then fashion designer and actress Anju Mahendru in1960s and early 1970s. They were in a relationship for seven years, according to sources, after this break-up, the couple did not talk to each other for 17 years.

Rajesh Khanna later married rising actress Dimple Kapadia in March 1973, before Kapadia's debut film Bobby was released in November that year. They have two daughters from their marriage; Twinkle and Rinke. Khanna and Kapadia separated in 1984 and did not complete the divorce proceedings.

Rajesh Khanna as a Politician

At the demand of Rajiv Gandhi, he began lobbying for Congress after 1984. In the political race for New Delhi seat in the 1991 Lok Sabha political race, Khanna lost to L.K. Advani by a restricted margin of 1589 votes, after which Khanna remained on the grounds at the tallying station demanding that he had been cheated of a success. In 1992, a by-political race was called after the acquiescence of the officeholder Member of Parliament L.K. Advani.

Rajesh Khanna challenged the seat once more and won the by-political race by crushing Shatrughan Sinha by 25,000 votes. Rajesh Khanna was an individual from Parliament for the Indian National Congress, from the New Delhi voting public, where he won the 1992 by-political decision, holding his seat until 1996 after which he was not intrigued by dynamic legislative issues.

Rajesh Khanna's Funeral

In June 2012, it was reported that Rajesh Khanna's health was deteriorating. On 23 June, he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai due to health complications. He was discharged from the hospital on 8 July and reportedly recovered.

Then on 14 July, Khanna was sent to Lilavati Hospital, but was discharged on 16 July. He died on 18 July 2012 in his bungalow in Mumbai, Ashirwad. Sources confirmed that his health was deteriorating since July 2011 as he was diagnosed with cancer. After his death, his co-star Mumtaz said that Khanna had been suffering from cancer for a period of the previous year.

His funeral took place on July 19 at 11:10 am. There were more than 1 million people at his funeral and his fans came from Delhi, Ahmedabad, America, Singapore and many other foreign countries. The police resorted to lathi charge to control the crowd of those people. He died in the presence of his wife Dimple Kapadia, daughters Rinke Khanna and son-in-law Akshaya Kumar, and other close relatives. Her pyre was given to her by her nine-year-old grandson Aarav with the help of Akshaya Kumar.

Awards and nominations

Rajesh Khanna was nominated for the Filmfare Award fourteen times and the Bengal Film Journalist Award twenty-five times. He received the Filmfare Award three times and the Bengal Film Journalist Award four times in total thirty-nine times for both awards. Rajesh Khanna was nominated for the All India critics award ten times and received the award seven times.

Rajesh Khanna has won 5 awards - Filmfare Award in 2005, Filmfare Award in 1990, Filmfare Award in 1975, Filmfare Award in 1972 and Filmfare Award in 1971.
