Some Things To Enjoy

Six hundred and thirty-nine episodes in counting, two hundred countries, five main characters, and three remarkable people started it all. The Simpson's, a sketch about a family and their day-to-day life in Springfield, that turned into a phenomenal sensation. Listen, don't click the back button; hear it out. You have to start at the beginning, no, not the beginning of the season you saw on television after you finished watching Cops. Start at season one; episode one, take a journey along with millions of people. I know what you're thinking. I used to have similar thoughts, "It's too many episodes; I don't have the time. People only mention it because it is popular." Yes, I agree, but for valid reasons, though. This show has impacted the world by its different introductions, memorable catchphrases, and remarkable writing.

It exhibits unapologetic, quirky, silly yet dry humor, not only within the writing but also in the illustrations themselves. The animators use jokes in sight gags such as billboards, newspapers, signs, and various locations to draw out the scene. I find myself chuckling every time I watch it.

The Simpson's doesn't cater to just the main characters; the background characters say and do as much as everyone else, friends like Ned Flanders, and his undying faith in Christianity. Ralph, an empty-headed boy who says pointless remarks and has hilarious reactions. Ms.Krabappel, a teacher that is unsympathetic to her students and lives a simple, bland life. Nelson, a school bully, hides his vulnerability through bullying. Moe is a bartender who struggles in the dating scene. Lenny, a man that everyone adores in Springfield. Those are some of the numerous characters. This show tackles cultural references, political conspiracy, systematic government, social society views, parodies, and celebrities.

Countless episodes shed light on issues going on in reality while amplifying references. For example: "The Old Man and the Lisa," an episode where Lisa advocates recycling while working with Mr. Burns to establish his empire again. One of many famous episodes turned into a meme, "Homer Loves Flanders," an iconic scene where Homer slowly backs into a bush in a parody of "Terminator 2: Judgment Day". "Two Bad Neighbors," George and Barbara Bush moves across from the Simpsons. Bart ruined Bush's memoirs, ultimately getting spanked by him, and refused to apologize. Whenever you watch a modern dysfunctional animated family, think of The Simpson's. If you are looking for another show to binge on and dont know where to look, then this show will feed the satisfaction that you crave. Grab a cup full of cold, crisp water or a delicious soft drink and savory snacks, get into your favorite seat, relax. If The Simpson's wasn't enough to satisfy you, then here's something that you might enjoy.

Think of a movie that you were utterly speechless, while your psyche struggles to catch up with everything that took place. Cold Mountain is one of many exceptionally written pieces, both as a film and novel. Turn back the time; during 1864 in mid-June, it's the fourth year of the Civil War, the South dwindles in support, supplies, and soldiers. North Carolina seceded from the Union and the Battle of the Crater, during the Siege of Petersburg began. Amongst them was Inman, a carpenter and a solider, (performed by Jude Law) Ada Monroe is the preacher's daughter (performed by Nicole Kidman), she moved from South Carolina to the district for her father's health.

When Inman meets Ada, their eyes lock and a deep unspoken connection transpired. They shared only but a few moments before the war separates them, but their passion captures the tragic, grim, romance while displaying raw emotion. This is a captivating story of a wounded soldier that goes absent from the army and travels through the violent winter, disoriented, starved, to go back home in Cold Mountain, in hopes to spend the rest of his life with Ada. Meanwhile, Ada is faced with harsh reality after her father's demise, she becomes alone and destitute. She does not know about surviving on her own. Neighbors take notice and send Ruby, a woman (played by Renée Zellweger) to help her. Over time, Ruby teaches Ada about planting, reaping, storing food, animal husbandry, and many life lessons. Even with romance as the theme, you will see that both characters transform and become different people because of their challenges and hardship that they endured. Cold Mountain is a film is based on the novel by Charles Frazier, it has received praise and numerous awards for its realistic, heartwarming, strong acting. Natalie Portman screen time was short however her character presence made any open background unify in that instant. Put this film on your "Watch Later" list. If you are not interested in olden love then Vicky Cristina Barcelona should reach your attention.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a romantic comedy, known for its affluent characters, beautiful crafted arts, gorgeous scenery and mature content. This modern narrative love story takes place in Spain, a country where romance is exuberant. Two American best friends Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) arrive in Spain for a summer vacation at a friend Barcelona home.

You should know that Vicky is engaged, her conception of love is traditional, Cristina is narcotic, emotionally and sexually adventurous. They didn't know their summer vacation would affect them so profoundly. Vicky was in town to study Barcelona’s art and culture and Cristina came along for the ride. Judy (Patricia Clarkson) invites them to an open art gallery, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) was seen there and was mistaken as the artist. After enjoying the day, they decide to go out for dinner. Once they are seated, Cristina makes flirtatious eye contact with Juan from across the room, he heads to their table and offers Vicky and Cristina to fly to Oviedo to spend the weekend with him to go sightseeing, have fun, and make love. Vicky's unimpressed nonetheless agrees to accompany her friend to watch over her. Throughout the weekend Cristina falls ill. Juan shares tales of Maria Elena (ex-wife) and his passion for writing and art with Vicky. Vicky wanted to leave but ended up sightseeing in the town of Oviedo with Juan. She has a change in the heart for him, towards the end of the weekend in the evening, and makes love.

Vicky and Cristina returns to Barcelona but Vicky develops genuine feelings, and is unsettled about the incident. She continues with her work and suppress what occurred in Oviedo. She marries shortly after. Juan and Cristina get into a relationship together. In the span of days their relationship flourishes, one evening he gets a phone call from the hospital about his ex-wife Maria Elena(Penélope Cruz). Out of pity he brings Maria Elena into his home that Cristina shares. Slowly, the three of them create a harmonious love relationship, it seemed too flawless for Cristina, the thought of leaving gradually engulfed her well-being, soon she decides to leave and spends time in France for a couple of weeks. Maria Elena and Juan's relationship collapsed once more. Vicky recognizes that her love for Juan was just a summer fling full of "what if's". The film makes an effort to convey an understanding of the various degrees of what love is. You see that in Cristina's passion for photography, Spaniard music, and the conflicting art around Spain. Art is used continuously throughout the film as a huge insight into the subject of love. As a fan of art, I found every scene to be beautifully put.

"Mmm, You are still not convinced." Alright, I have to warn you before I suggest anything else. I'm not a TV type of person but I know a good show. True Detective starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. True Detective is about mystery, crime, and drama. Altogether it has three seasons, we will discuss the first two. The first season is about a recent case being linked to an older case that occurred years ago with only bits of evidence to go off of. The first episode takes place in Louisiana, a fire consuming a large field, then it cuts to a deposition. Martin and Rust are detectives being questioned separately about a case that happened seventeen years ago. In 95 the murder of a 28-year-old woman corpse was found by a tree posed as if in prayer, her head is crowned with deer antlers, while her body is surrounded by twigs lattice works. A recently slain woman resembles the same case in 95 concluding that the suspect is still at large. There are only eight episodes but every episode builds suspense. McConaughey did an excellent job bringing his character to life, as you watch the show, you feel as of you could relate to Rust's (McConaughey) ideology about life and morality. Martin (Harrelson) keeps Rust grounded from getting lost in the case, even so, Martin tries not to lose his faith in his partner. Both of them go through hell and high water privately and together, this case binds them in ways unexpectedly. Season two of True Detective setting is in California.

The opening scene shows a corrupt city manager found dead along the side of the highway. Ray (Collin Farrell) and "Ani"(Rachel McAdams) are called to assist the investigation. That is right. Rachel McAdams does take a different role, she plays an emotionless woman, all work no play type of attitude and I have to admit that she carried her end, maybe even more. This season is like an onion, there are layers, each layer contains new twists and turns to follow. It gets confusing at times, but it is something to look forward to.

Do you remember back in 2013 a show called Orange Is the New Black released on Netflix? It received high ratings and awards, it was the most talked-about show in 2014. Although it was a good show, there was another show trailing behind. Wentworth is an Australian drama series that show is life inside a prison. There aren't many characters, so you see how each character's backstory unfolds and shed light on the question the viewers have. It begins with Bea Smith, the main character entering prison having no insight into how life works behind barbed fence. She unknowingly adapts to her new life while turmoil and chaos revolve around her. In each episodes the show introduces characters and the challenges that they are faced with. Wentworth is in my top tier of favorite show, when watching this, you feel like you are on a rollercoaster ride. You sit on the edge of your seat and see everything building up to the climax, once you are at the highest peak in the show, you shout at the television knowing that there is excitement ahead of you. It's dynamic, the violence is gruesome, the sex is explicit the drugs are dirty and has amazing storytelling.
