Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the 2019 Kannada film Alidu Ulidavaru, including its complete story and ending.

Alidu Ulidavaru: A Supernatural Mystery Built Around Science and Fear

Alidu Ulidavaru is a 2019 Kannada supernatural mystery thriller that constantly asks one fascinating question: can everything that appears paranormal be explained by science?

At the center of the story is Seelan, a television host who has built his reputation by investigating supposedly haunted places. Whenever people claim that a house is possessed, a ghost is attacking residents, or some supernatural force is responsible for unexplained deaths, Seelan enters the location and searches for a logical explanation.

By the beginning of the film, he has already investigated 99 paranormal cases.

And according to him, not even one of them involved a real ghost.

But his 100th investigation completely changes the way he sees the supernatural.

Seelan Has Debunked 99 Paranormal Cases

The movie first establishes exactly what kind of investigator Seelan is.

In one of his previous cases, people believe that the spirit of a mysterious woman is haunting a house. Several terrifying incidents have happened there, and nobody wants to enter the property.

Seelan investigates and discovers that there is no ghost at all.

The person frightening everyone is actually the security guard, who has been dressing like a woman.

His tragic past explains his actions. His wife was sexually assaulted and murdered by people connected to the property, and the trauma severely affected his mental condition. He eventually started taking revenge while creating the illusion that a female spirit was haunting the place.

For Seelan, the case proves his philosophy once again.

People may call something supernatural when they do not understand it, but there is usually a human or scientific explanation hiding underneath.

He records the investigation as his 99th solved case.

Now he needs something extraordinary for Episode 100.

The Pressure to Create a Special 100th Episode

Seelan's paranormal television program has become extremely popular, so expectations for its 100th episode are enormous.

His team wants a case unlike anything they have covered before.

Around the same time, Seelan continues debating supernatural phenomena with a spiritual guru he respects. Their beliefs are almost complete opposites.

Seelan argues that science can explain the things people describe as ghosts, spirits and demons.

The guru believes that some experiences exist beyond the limits of current scientific understanding.

Their disagreement becomes one of the movie's most important themes.

Seelan also has another reason to finish the 100th episode quickly. His girlfriend Amrutha dislikes the dangerous work he keeps doing. Their relationship has been going on for a long time, and Seelan knows that if he wants to build a future with her, he may eventually have to leave this life behind.

So he decides that Episode 100 could become his final investigation.

A Stranger Publicly Challenges Seelan

Everything changes when a mysterious man begins contacting Seelan.

The stranger accuses him of being a fraud.

He claims that Seelan's previous 99 investigations were fake and challenges him to prove his abilities inside a genuinely haunted house.

At first, Seelan refuses to entertain him.

But the situation becomes much more serious when the man confronts Seelan publicly during a book-related media event.

With reporters watching, the stranger asks a devastating question: if Seelan truly believes ghosts do not exist, why is he afraid to investigate this particular house?

The media immediately becomes interested.

Rejecting the challenge could damage Seelan's credibility and make people question all 99 of his previous investigations.

Eventually, he accepts.

The Terrifying History of the Haunted House

The man explains that the property belonged to his family.

He had wanted to sell it because of financial problems, but strange incidents kept happening.

A person who came to inspect the house suddenly behaved abnormally and died.

Later, a painter working inside the property also died under mysterious circumstances.

The most disturbing incident involved a married couple who visited the house. The husband suddenly became extremely violent and brutally attacked his wife.

After these events, people became convinced that something evil was living inside the property.

The man wants Seelan to enter the house and finally reveal the truth.

Seelan checks the reports and discovers that the deaths are real.

This is not simply a fabricated ghost story.

He accepts the investigation as his 100th case.

A Warning Seelan Refuses to Follow

Before leaving, Seelan tells people close to him that this will be his final paranormal investigation.

Once it is finished, he wants to leave the profession and concentrate on his future with Amrutha.

The guru, however, gives him a disturbing warning.

He tells Seelan that the day is not favorable and suggests postponing the investigation.

Seelan refuses.

He has spent years rejecting superstition, so changing his plans because of an ominous warning would go against everything he believes.

He travels to the mysterious house.

The owner tells him that the key is with his elder brother, whose house is nearby.

Seelan visits the brother.

Before handing over the key, the family offers Seelan prasadam, religious food that has been offered to God.

The brother also warns him that there seems to be negative energy inside the haunted property.

Seelan does not take the warning seriously.

He takes the key and enters the house.

Seelan Begins Seeing Impossible Things

Inside, Seelan prepares for another normal investigation.

He installs cameras throughout the building and observes the surroundings carefully.

At first, noises inside the property appear to have ordinary explanations.

But slowly, things become much stranger.

Seelan begins seeing mysterious figures.

He hears unexplained sounds.

Then he experiences something that appears physically impossible.

When he tries washing his face, water flows normally from the tap, yet it seems unable to touch him.

Soon he sees Amrutha standing behind him.

But Amrutha should not be there.

The hallucinations become more terrifying.

Large monstrous figures appear inside the property. Seelan believes he is seeing something resembling the Brahma Rakshasa he had been researching.

His visions involving Amrutha become increasingly disturbing.

At one point, he sees her pregnant. A child appears and then rapidly grows into a gigantic figure.

For the first time in his career, Seelan cannot logically explain what he is experiencing.

Then everything goes dark.

Amrutha Finds Seelan Apparently Dead

Amrutha receives a frightening call connected to Seelan and rushes toward the house.

When she arrives, she finds him lying motionless.

He appears to be dead.

News spreads rapidly that the famous paranormal investigator who spent years claiming ghosts did not exist has died while filming his 100th haunted-house investigation.

The irony creates a media sensation.

A police investigation begins.

There are no obvious external injuries on Seelan's body, making the case even stranger.

The police also discover that the man who originally brought Seelan to the haunted house has disappeared.

Meanwhile, investigators recover Seelan's personal diary and his password-protected recording equipment.

His diary contains notes about the strange events he experienced inside the house.

For investigators, a disturbing possibility emerges.

Had Seelan actually discovered something supernatural?

Or was something happening to his mind?

Seelan Suddenly Comes Back to Life

Then comes one of the movie's biggest twists.

Seelan is not actually dead.

His heartbeat had stopped temporarily, leading people to believe he had died. Later, his heart starts beating again, and doctors begin treating him.

The police then receive another crucial piece of information.

Doctors have detected a drug inside his body.

That clue completely changes the investigation.

Suspicion soon falls on the family connected to the supposedly haunted house, especially after the police learn about the prasadam offered before Seelan entered the property.

The Real Secret Behind the Haunted House

The investigation finally reveals that the mysterious incidents were connected to a family property dispute.

The elder brother had always felt neglected by his father.

According to him, his younger brother received preferential treatment despite living irresponsibly.

When their father divided his property, the younger son received the valuable ancestral house.

The elder brother resented him deeply.

He wanted control of the property.

Instead of simply attacking his brother, he came up with a far more disturbing plan.

He wanted people to believe his younger brother had become mentally unstable.

To achieve this, LSD was secretly mixed into the prasadam being given to him.

The drug could cause intense hallucinations and seriously distort someone's perception of reality.

That explains why people associated with the house experienced horrifying visions, paranoia and abnormal behavior.

The supposedly haunted house was not necessarily forcing people to see monsters.

Their own minds were creating terrifying experiences under the influence of the drug.

The LSD Twist Explains the Deaths and Hallucinations

The revelation provides a scientific explanation for most of the movie's supernatural events.

Someone under the influence of the drug could see things that were not actually present.

Their existing fears and thoughts could become terrifying visual experiences.

This explains why people entering the house behaved unpredictably.

It also explains why the man connected to the property earlier felt that somebody was following him after consuming the prasadam.

The conspiracy had gotten completely out of control.

What began as an attempt to manipulate a family member for property eventually contributed to deaths, violence and chaos.

And the same substance appears to explain Seelan's terrifying experience.

Or at least, that is what everyone initially believes.

Why Was Seelan's Blood Test Confusing?

The movie then adds another important twist.

The prasadam given before the investigation was not actually eaten by Seelan.

Seelan gave it to the man who had brought him to the house.

That explains why the other man later experienced the sensation that something was following him.

So how did the drug appear in Seelan's medical results?

The film shows confusion surrounding the bodies and blood samples at the hospital.

The samples appear to have been accidentally mixed up.

Because of that mistake, investigators initially reach the wrong conclusion about who had consumed the drug.

This changes the entire meaning of Seelan's experience.

If Seelan never ate the drugged prasadam, what caused his visions inside the house?

Alidu Ulidavaru Ending Explained

This is where Alidu Ulidavaru deliberately refuses to give viewers a completely comfortable answer.

After recovering, Seelan continues thinking about what happened inside the house.

For 99 cases, he had managed to prove that supposedly supernatural events had rational explanations.

Every ghost had turned out to be something else.

Every paranormal mystery had eventually made sense.

His 100th case is different.

The drug conspiracy explains many of the bizarre incidents connected to the property.

It explains why certain people hallucinated.

It explains much of the strange behavior.

But it does not completely explain what Seelan personally witnessed.

If he did not consume the drug, then the visions he saw inside the house cannot easily be dismissed as drug-induced hallucinations.

For the first time, Seelan is forced to consider the possibility that something beyond his understanding may actually exist.

Was There Really a Ghost in Alidu Ulidavaru?

The movie intentionally leaves this ambiguous.

Most of the haunted-house mystery has a scientific explanation involving manipulation, drugs and hallucinations.

Yet Seelan's final realization leaves one piece of the puzzle unresolved.

He describes his first 99 cases as situations where the idea of a spirit could ultimately be disproved.

But in his 100th case, he believes he may finally have encountered something resembling a true supernatural presence.

He still does not know exactly what caused it.

That uncertainty is the real ending of Alidu Ulidavaru.

The movie does not simply reveal that ghosts are real.

Instead, it challenges Seelan's absolute confidence.

A man who spent his career believing that everything paranormal could be scientifically explained finally encounters an experience for which he has no satisfying explanation.

The Meaning Behind the Final Twist

The strongest idea in Alidu Ulidavaru is the conflict between certainty and uncertainty.

Seelan begins the story convinced that the supernatural exists only because people do not understand science.

The guru represents the opposite perspective. He accepts that some things may exist beyond what science can currently explain.

By the ending, neither side is completely proven wrong.

Science uncovers the drug conspiracy and exposes the human greed behind much of the tragedy.

But science does not completely resolve Seelan's personal experience inside the house.

That is why the 100th case becomes so important.

It does not necessarily transform Seelan into a believer.

Instead, it teaches him that saying “I don't know” may sometimes be more truthful than forcing every mystery into an explanation.

And that final uncertainty is what makes Alidu Ulidavaru much more interesting than a straightforward haunted-house movie.
