Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for A Violent Prosecutor (2016), including its ending and final courtroom revelations.

A Violent Prosecutor is a Korean crime-comedy built around corruption, revenge, prison politics and one extremely clever partnership. The story follows prosecutor Byun Jae-wook, who goes from putting criminals behind bars to becoming a prisoner himself after being framed for a suspect's death.

But prison does not end Jae-wook's fight. Instead, it gives him the time to understand the conspiracy that destroyed his life—and to find the perfect person to help him fight back.

How Does A Violent Prosecutor Begin?

The story begins with a violent clash surrounding a bird sanctuary.

A construction company wants to develop the protected land, while environmental protesters oppose the project. However, what appears to be a genuine demonstration quickly turns violent when hired gangsters infiltrate the protest.

Their purpose is simple: create chaos, attack the police and make the real environmental activists look dangerous.

Jae-wook suspects that powerful people connected to the construction project are behind the violence. During his investigation, he interrogates one of the men involved in the attack.

The suspect claims to suffer from asthma and repeatedly needs his inhaler.

Jae-wook believes he is hiding something, but before he can uncover the complete truth, disaster strikes.

Why Is Jae-wook Sent to Prison?

The suspect is later found dead inside the interrogation room.

Because Jae-wook had questioned him aggressively, suspicion immediately falls on the prosecutor.

Even worse, important evidence disappears and circumstances are manipulated to make Jae-wook look responsible.

The people Jae-wook trusted convince him that admitting guilt will result in a relatively light punishment.

He believes them.

It becomes one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

Instead of being protected, Jae-wook is sentenced to prison while the people responsible for the conspiracy remain free.

Once inside, he realizes that his downfall was not an accident. The case was connected to influential figures who needed him out of the way.

How Does Jae-wook Become Powerful in Prison?

Life in prison is brutal at first.

Many inmates recognize Jae-wook as the prosecutor responsible for putting criminals behind bars, making him an obvious target.

But Jae-wook has something that most prisoners do not: an extraordinary understanding of the law.

He begins helping inmates and even prison officials with their legal problems.

His knowledge gradually becomes more valuable than physical strength.

He builds relationships, earns favors and eventually becomes one of the most influential prisoners inside the facility.

Five years pass, but Jae-wook never forgets the conspiracy that put him there.

Then he finally discovers the clue he has been waiting for.

Jae-wook Meets Han Chi-won

A young con artist named Han Chi-won enters the prison.

While talking about birds, Chi-won repeats information suspiciously similar to something connected with the original bird sanctuary protest.

Jae-wook immediately becomes interested.

After questioning him, he discovers that Chi-won knows about the group of hired men used during the demonstration.

Now Jae-wook finally has a way to attack the conspiracy from outside prison.

He offers Chi-won a deal.

Jae-wook will use his legal knowledge to help Chi-won regain his freedom. In exchange, Chi-won must help collect the evidence necessary to clear Jae-wook's name.

Why Is Chi-won So Important?

Chi-won is almost the complete opposite of Jae-wook.

Jae-wook understands law, evidence and courtroom strategy.

Chi-won understands people.

He knows how to lie, manipulate, impersonate and convince people that he belongs somewhere he absolutely does not.

Before Chi-won leaves prison, Jae-wook trains him for his mission.

Once outside, Chi-won begins entering the world surrounding the people responsible for Jae-wook's imprisonment.

He approaches former protesters, witnesses and people connected to the construction company. He tricks people into revealing information and gradually collects evidence showing that the supposedly spontaneous protest violence had actually been organized.

Most importantly, the trail begins leading toward senior prosecutor Woo Jong-gil.

The Conspiracy Starts Falling Apart

Chi-won's biggest strength is his ability to become whoever the situation requires.

He enters political events, builds relationships with powerful people and even pretends to belong to the legal world.

Piece by piece, he helps uncover connections between the construction company and Woo Jong-gil.

Financial information and witness testimony begin showing that powerful figures benefited from the bird sanctuary controversy.

At the same time, Jae-wook continues directing the operation from prison.

The conspiracy that originally appeared impossible to prove slowly starts collapsing.

However, Woo Jong-gil realizes that Jae-wook is fighting back.

Attempts are made to destroy evidence, intimidate witnesses and prevent Jae-wook from receiving another fair hearing.

But Jae-wook has learned from his first mistake.

This time, he refuses to trust empty promises.

A Violent Prosecutor Ending Explained

The climax takes place in court.

Jae-wook finally gets the opportunity to challenge the story that sent him to prison.

Chi-won testifies about the staged protest and explains how people were recruited to create violence at the bird sanctuary.

Evidence also connects the construction company's activities with Woo Jong-gil.

But one crucial issue remains: the dead suspect's inhaler.

The inhaler matters because it can help prove that the suspect genuinely suffered from asthma and that the circumstances surrounding his death had been manipulated.

Woo Jong-gil believes this evidence is gone forever.

That confidence becomes his downfall.

During the courtroom confrontation, testimony and recorded conversations reveal how evidence surrounding the inhaler was deliberately removed.

Jae-wook then produces the inhaler.

Woo Jong-gil reacts in shock and effectively exposes his own knowledge of what happened to it.

The trap works.

The evidence, recordings and witness statements finally connect the conspiracy together.

Does Jae-wook Prove His Innocence?

Yes.

By the end of A Violent Prosecutor, the case against Jae-wook collapses.

The conspiracy responsible for framing him is exposed, Woo Jong-gil's actions come to light, and Jae-wook finally clears the stain that had followed him for years.

His victory is especially satisfying because he does not win by using brute force.

He wins using the same thing that originally defined his career: the law.

The major difference is that this time he combines his legal knowledge with Chi-won's unconventional talent for deception.

What Happens to Chi-won?

Chi-won becomes the unexpected hero of Jae-wook's revenge plan.

He begins as an unreliable con artist who appears interested mainly in protecting himself.

Yet his ability to infiltrate powerful circles, manipulate suspects and gather evidence makes Jae-wook's plan possible.

Their partnership is what gives A Violent Prosecutor much of its comedy and energy.

One man understands the system.

The other knows how to cheat it.

Together, they expose people who believed they were powerful enough to control both.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

The ending is ultimately about corruption turning against itself.

Jae-wook is originally destroyed because powerful people manipulate evidence, witnesses and legal procedures.

But after spending years inside prison, he learns how to use those same systems strategically.

Chi-won becomes his connection to the outside world, while Jae-wook remains the mastermind behind the operation.

The final courtroom sequence is therefore more than simply Jae-wook proving that he did not commit murder.

It is his opportunity to expose the entire chain of corruption that made his conviction possible.

Final Thoughts

A Violent Prosecutor combines a prison drama, courtroom thriller, political conspiracy and con-artist comedy into one revenge story.

The most entertaining element is the partnership between Jae-wook and Chi-won. Jae-wook has the legal intelligence but cannot leave prison. Chi-won has freedom and confidence but needs someone capable of turning his tricks into an actual legal strategy.

When their abilities come together, the people who framed Jae-wook finally lose control of the game.

And that is what makes the ending satisfying: Jae-wook does not simply escape prison.

He proves why he should never have been there in the first place.
