7 Things I'm hoping for with Thor: Love and Thunder

My favorite Avenger with a Female twist.

Thor has always been my favorite Avenger. So much so when Thor: Dark World was just coming out, I took my Mjolnir replica to the theater with me.

Cuz I'm a big nerd and that's okay!

Thor Odinson is funny, confident, strong, and has a big heart for his family and friends. And those lightning powers in Thor Ragnorok? Just... amazing. That scene just gets me. And while he may not always be the smartest hero (look at the first Thor movie), he is my favorite.

Before reading any further, you need to know that this post has a lot of spoilers if you haven't read the Mighty Thor comic books. If you are okay with that, keep reading!

The Mighty Thor comic books are a different tale in the Thor universe, this time about a female Thor. Long story short, Thor Odinson is no longer worthy to wield Mjolnir, leaving him depressed and angry.

But, there must always be a Thor.

Reading the Mighty Thor on my apartment deck

Mjolnir chooses a new Thor, someone who is worthy of holding the hammer, who loves the earth and its people, and someone who will protect at all costs.

That person is Dr. Jane Foster.

If you don't remember Jane, she appears as a scientist in the first and second Thor films and is portrayed by Natalie Portman.

Jane is smart, fierce, strong-willed, and knows how to get what she wants. I loved her character in the first Thor film, and while I think the Dark World film did her a disservice by making her character too angsty, she did have some really great moments.

After Jane inherits Mjolnir, she is now bestowed the responsibility of taking his role as protector of the Nine Realms.

When holding Mjolnir and taking on the power of Thor, Jane sort of Sailor Moon style transforms into the new Thor. Long blonde hair, tall, and super muscular. She is worthy of the hammer and the epitome of what a Thor supposed to be.

Another thing about Jane in this series is that she is fighting Breast Cancer.

At this point in the MCU, we haven't seen Jane in a long time.

She and Thor broke up sometime after Thor: Dark World, and they never really go into details about why (in the movies at least). Thor mentions her in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, but I think part of that is to keep her character relevant and remind us that she is still there.

7 things I am hoping for in Thor: Love and Thunder

Now that Jane is finally getting her story told on the big screen, there are a few things I am really hoping to see...

#1 Buff Female Thor

This goes first on my list because it is pretty much the only thing I care about.

Not really, but really.

After my own disappointment with Alicia Vikander's portrayal of Lara Croft, and the very thin-framed Elektra in the Daredevil Netflix show, I am done with my favorite buff female characters being shrunk.

Don't get me wrong, the actors pictured above are talented in their own rights, and I know that they did the best they could in their roles. There is also nothing wrong with lean female characters at all.

But our muscular, busty female protagonists should get fair treatment too. Sometimes, women have big muscles and weigh more than 100lbs.

Female Thor is buff and intimidating to strong men. She is Vikingesque in stature. Her arms look like that of a CrossFittter or an MMA fighter.

I think that Jane's Thor should have the musculature she deserves.

And it looks like Natalie Portman thinks so too.

As a muscular woman myself, I am SO proud of Nat for taking on this role and finding her own muscularity for it.

Natalie looks so strong and fit, and healthy, and is going to do such an amazing job as Thor. I cannot wait to see her crush this role.

#2. A Thor: Ragnarok Color Pallet

One of the things that I think they really got right for Thor: Ragnarok was the color pallet. The Thor aesthetic is supposed to be bright, colorful, and whimsical. The Mighty Thor comic books also have these traits.

In Thor: Ragnarok, they definitely did this theme justice.

And with director Taika Waititi returning to direct this movie, I think we can all get excited about it being done well.

#3. An appearance from Loki

That's right, Loki should be back for Thor: Love and Thunder. His character in the comic books is a constant antagonist for Thor, as he usually is.

Loki is mischief at its finest and will hopefully play a part in this film.

Whether or not Loki will actually make an appearance is yet to be known.

So far I haven't seen anything about it on casting pages, but with the new Loki TV series coming to Disney+ in the next few weeks we may see some changes.

This Loki would obviously not be the same one that died in Infinity War, but the one who got away in Endgame. This event created a new timeline, where Loki potentially lives.

This Loki would not have gone through the events of Dark World or Ragnarok, bonding with Thor and realizing that Odin really did see them both as his son's. We will be back to square one with Loki, and Thor Odinson will still have lost the brother he became close to.

There is another article here that goes into some things we may get to see with the new Loki series:

In the Mighty Thor comic books, Loki plays a big role, and I would love to see Tom Hiddleston reclaim his role for this film. We can hope!

#4. Female Strength Shown Properly

Avengers: Endgame image via cosmicbook.news

The girl power team-up in Avengers: Endgame was just cringy to watch.

The thought was nice, but there is no way that all the female Avengers just happened to end up in the exact same place, at the exact same time, on a giant battlefield with hundreds of thousands of people. Just no.

As a woman, this scene did not make me feel empowered.

The reason why is that it felt so forced. None of those characters came to the field together, and none of them could have organized fast enough to all get there at once.

It would be rash and impractical to try to organize this in the first place during a battle.

The Thor: Goddess of Thunder comics did this better.

Freya called together an army of female heroes to help Thor beat the Destroyer, powered by her husband Odin.

In this scene, Freya had specifically called together all of these women, and her son, to fight together as a team. It wasn't a happenstance, forced team-up. This scene also shows that men and women can fight together, and neither is stronger than the other.

I would like to see something more like this, even just with Valkyrie, Sif Thor, and Odinson.

#5. Rekindling of the Jane + Thor romance

Jane and Thor have a very sweet chemistry, and I would love to see them patch things up and give their relationship a real shot.

Also, Odinson and Thor make one hel of a power couple.

By this scene above in the comic books, Odinson knows that Jane is Thor now, and the struggle she is facing on Earth with her Cancer. He knows about her fight with it, and how strong she is for fighting it alone.

The two come back to terms with each other, and it's pretty beautiful. This scene especially is everything I could hope for with a superhero romance.

While part of me was hoping that Lady Sif would get her chance to be with Thor, I don't think that will happen. In the comic books, Thor and Sif are together, and in traditional mythology, Sif is Thor's wife.

But if Jane and Thor can make things work, I will be very happy for them.

#6. Jane telling Thor how it is

While I would love to see Jane and Odinson heal their relationship, I also want her to tell him how it is and how it has been without him.

She has Cancer, he wasn't there for her. So she is handling it on her own.

Jane is a strong independent woman, and she can do that with or without Odinson. Jane as Thor is a strong independent woman, and she can certainly hold her own.

I would love to see her show him how strong she is and make him respect her as her own hero.

#7. A proper portrayal of a strong woman going through Cancer treatment

The comic books depict Jane's fight against Cancer in an amazing way.

Each time Jane transforms into Thor, her body is healed. It burns out the chemo, strengthens her muscles, and leaves her healthier than she has ever been. But once she goes back to being Jane, the Cancer returns, and the chemo is no longer in her system.

At this rate, turning into Thor is what will kill Jane Foster.

I would love to see Jane's fight with Cancer portrayed in a proper form, showing how hard it is on her mind, body, and spirit.

Having to come to terms with it towards the end of the film, and take her Cancer treatment more seriously would be such an interesting twist for the MCU. A non-traditional story done right.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think Thor: Love and Thunder is going to be amazing.

Whether or not the things I listed above will happen, I know that Taika Waititi has this under control and I'm sure will make another masterpiece with this film.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to come out to Theaters in May of 2022.
