7 Most Inappropriate Sibling Relationships in TV and Movies

On screen sibling relationships that never fail to weird me out.

Television and movies have given the world some great character relationships over the years, but like the double edged sword it is, they've also given us some not so great character relationships. And today I want to focus on some of the not so great (and just inappropriate) on screen sibling relationships. Buckle up, because for every T'Challa and Shuri, there seems to be multiple sibling relationships that are hellbent on triggering people's fight or flight reflexes.

7. Rosalie Hale & Emmett Cullen/Jasper Hale & Alice Cullen (The Twilight series)

Before my fellow Twi-hards get up in arms about this one, let me explain. While fans of the series know that the Cullen clan are not really related despite having a family dynamic, to the regular folks of Forks, Washington the Cullens and Hales are known to be foster siblings. So even though the audience knows that there's nothing unusual about a group of vampire couples coming together to form a coven, Jessica Stanley is right in saying that their out and proud relationships with one another is weird. Maybe that's another aspect of their lives they should have kept a secret.

6. Casey McDonald & Derek Venturi (Life With Derek)

Growing up, the Canadian show Life With Derek used to be one of my favorites on Disney Channel. It would come on way past my bedtime and possibly for good reason, considering that the main character Casey and her new step brother Derek, had a sexual tension that had many people asking "what the f*ck?" and a shameless few still shipping "Dasey" even to this day (including the actors who played them).

While the step sibling romance is not an uncommon trope, it's typically one that is reserved for older audiences and pornos. So having that kind of dynamic in a show for kids only adds to the cringe factor.

5. Luther & Allison Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy)

Luther and Allison Hargreeves may not be biologically related but having been adopted by the same man and raised as brother and sister their whole lives makes their siblinghood legitimate and their relationship with one another borderline illegal. Although Luther and Allison are never shown to have a sexual relationship, it is clear that they're in love with each other, which the show tries to paint as a star crossed lovers kind of situation, but in reality, it's just strange.

4. Brandon Foster & Callie Adams-Foster (The Fosters)

When Callie becomes the new foster child in the Adams-Foster household, her and the oldest child of the family, Brandon, have an almost instantaneous attraction to one another. While it's not strange to be attracted to a mysterious new person who comes into your life, when we find out that in the past Callie was sexually assaulted by her previous foster brother, it adds a new dynamic to her and Brandon's interactions. And when it becomes clear that Callie wants to become a permanent member of the Adams-Foster family, rather than the two of them moving into safe sibling territory, they end up having sex with one another the day before Callie's adoption is finalized. Needless to say, it leaves a weird taste in the mouth of many viewers as we watch them refer to each other as brother and sister after that.

3. Cesare & Lucrezia Borgia (The Borgias)

It should come as no surprise that being the illegitimate children of a tyrannical pope would lead to some deep-seated issues, but incest is not one that I would have guessed. The sexual tension between these two biological siblings is apparent throughout the show and comes to a climax (no pun intended) when the two have sex the same night that Lucrezia marries another man. Talk about family drama.

2. Norma Bates & Caleb Calhoun (Bates Motel)

As if Norma Bates' relationship with her youngest son, Norman, isn't weird enough, things get even more weird and downright disgusting in season two of Bates Motel when Norma's older brother Caleb shows up. Eventually we find out that Caleb isn't just Norma's brother, but he's also the father of her oldest son. Need I say more?

1. Cersei & Jaime Lannister (Game of Thrones)

Of all of the messed up relationships on this list, this one takes the cake. These two twins take closeness to a whole new level by having an ongoing romantic relationship since they were kids and even creating three children together. Yikes.

***

There are probably many other on screen sibling relationships that could fall in the category of inappropriate and maybe one day if I can stomach it, this list will expand. Hopefully in the future we can get good entertainment without the need for incestuous undertones (or overtones).
