It seems like everyone is obsessed with the show Bridgerton, which as quickly become one of the most popular shows on Netflix. Whether it is the romance between the characters, the drama, or the beautiful costumes this show had something for everyone. It has been renewed for a second season, but until that drops fans will have to find other shows to satisfy their craving. So, here’s a list and small description of other shows you can enjoy that are like Bridgerton.

Death Comes to Pemberley

Source: Thirteen

This show is set six years after Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy married. It is a mini-series based on a novel. While having a party an uninvited Mr. Wickham and Lydia attempt to crash it when it all goes wrong. Lydia shows up screaming about murder, and Wickham is arrested. Wickham is put on trial and is set to hang while the rest of the characters find clues to unravel the mystery. Did Wickham murder his former friend or is something more sinister going on? Part romance, part whodunnit this show allows the viewer to enjoy seeing their favorite characters after the end of the Austen novel. Stream on Masterpiece or rent from Amazon.

North & South

Adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel this story follows Margaret Hale who moves with her family from southern England into the northern city Milton and meets John Thornton, a mill owner. Their attraction is complicated by outside forces related to Margaret’s awareness of class differences and the clashes between the workers and mill owners. This series does a good job highlighting some issues with industrialization that many tend to gloss over when considering it progress. While not on a streaming service it is well worth renting.

Pride and Prejudice

Why mess with a classic? Whether it is the ending to the 2005 film that had one of the most romantic proposal scenes or the one mini-series that stuck a little closer to the original story, this timeless story is one that can be watched again and again. Me? I prefer Colin Firth in the pond any day of the week. You can stream the mini-series on Hulu.

Downton Abbey

I’m sure most people have seen this. However, there is the movie that takes place after the last season that has been released not long ago. While it is not the same time frame as Bridgerton, Downton Abbey follows the Crawley family when they learn that the heir to the house has perished on the Titanic. Thrown into chaos as they wait to see who the new heir will be since the daughters can not inherit follow the drama of the house both upstairs and downstairs with the servants and their own complications. Watch every season on Amazon Prime.

Lost in Austen

Imagine if the book and characters you loved so much weren’t just real, but you could join them. That is the premise of this show when the main character Amanda struggles with her normal life. One day Elizabeth Bennet walks out of her closet and they agree to temporarily switch places. After convincing the family that she is Elizabeth’s friend who is currently out of town, she stays with them and attempts to keep the story on track. Made difficult by catching the eye of Jane’s Mr. Bingley, confronting Wickham early into the story, and attempting to not fall in love with Mr. Darcy herself. Rent on Amazon.

Austenland

I think I’m finding a theme in the types of films being recommended, but how can you not with such a classic? This movie is different than the other entries because it takes place in the present. It centers around Jane Hayes (played by Keri Russell) who is obsessed with all things Austen, and even has a cardboard cutout of a Colin Firth Mr. Darcy. When she learns of an all-inclusive vacation that immerses you in that time-period (complete with your own romantic Austen ending) she jumps at the chance. This film is your typical romantic comedy but it’s cheesy in all the fun ways. If only this was something we could go to! Rent on Amazon.
