5 Reasons To Watch: Space Sweepers
Sci-fi trash collectors get in over their heads in this high octane Korean epic.
If you are an avid (American) Netflixer like me, you have worked your way through all the standard shows that most people watch, and have started to get into all that Netflix has to offer. I'm speaking of course to foreign films and other languages.
While browsing the latest that Netflix had to offer, I came across this marvelous offer of a show. Without learning to much about the movie, I jumped in immediately. The result?
Space Sweepers is a phenomenal movie!
If you don't want to take my word for it, here are 5 reasons you should watch Space Sweepers today.
1. The opening scene
The first five minutes are amazing and capture an ecstatic thrill for the setting, and also explains the title of the film. In the future, space debris is a huge problem and it's not hard to see why; a piece of steel from an exploded ship or destroyed satellite rocketing around Earth, being pulled into it's orbit and killing hundreds of thousands of people is a devastating thought.
Ships equipped with these grappling hook style components shoot the hook into the debris to slow and tow it back where it can be sold as scrap.
Why do I love this? I've never seen any other sci-fi series deal with the space debris in this way and it makes perfect sense! It's a fantastic concept, and it shows us "why" in the first 5 minutes.
2. Multilingual
This movie is for polyglots! I regularly work on teaching myself other languages, so the fact that this movie includes multiple languages (Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, French, Spanish, English) is something I really love. Since this sci-fi epic takes place above a future Earth, each character speaks the language of their nationality.
This view of the future actually makes me really happy; the differences in our languages should be celebrated and I think that this movie does just that!
3. Believable Bad Guy
The bad guy of the movie is a corporate CEO named James Sullivan who seems like the savior at first sight; a man who has a vision to turn Mars into a perfect Eden. Although Sullivan is suffering from some form of disease that isn't delved into in the movie, his motives are perfectly transparent. He abuses his power as if he is in the moral high ground, and his self assuredness is the hubris of his downfall. Although that villain arc is nothing new, Space Sweepers delivers on it in an exemplary manner. How exactly that takes place, you'll have to wait and see.
4. Action Sequences
There aren't too many throughout the movie, but the few that are in this movie are excellently executed. The settings are diverse enough to be interesting and the fights, gunplay, and chases play out beautifully. At no point is this "action for actions sake" and each punch, kick, and gunshot is all working towards something greater in the movie. Of course, the reason for all this action is something I want to keep as a secret for you to enjoy yourself. The science fiction combat is tantalizing with enough futuristic goodies to get you going.
5. Characters (specifically Bubs)
The supporting characters in this are great, and their individual quirks and aspects add to the overall development of the movie, but to be perfectly clear, the four main characters in the movie are exceptionally good, well thought out and well developed. They all have personal aspirations and desires while working together to reach a higher objective. They have biases, downfalls, weakness, but also qualities we can sympathize and even admire.
However, of all these characters, the primary reason I would recommend anyone to watch this movie is because of Bubs.
Bubs is a sentient humanoid A.I. who is constantly looked down upon for not being human. Despite this, they display humanity time and time again. Bubs is the best robot I've ever watched in a movie. Better than Chappie. Better than Sonny in iRobot.
These 5 (mostly) spoiler free reasons are why you should watch this amazing movie. Add it to your Netflix list today!
