5 Incredible Easter Eggs You (Probably) Missed in Your Favorite Movies
In on the Joke
By the end of this listicle, you are going to have to spend the next couple of days re-watching these classic movies to see if you can spot these seriously awesome Easter eggs.
I love a good Easter egg hunt. As a movie nut, I love nothing more than sharing in an inside joke dropped into a movie by the production team and director.
Filmmakers have been sneaking Easter eggs into our movies for decades— we’ve all seen them but, today, I wanted to share a few of my favorites that can be found in some of the biggest and most popular movies ever released.
5. 'King Kong:' 2005
Think back to the scene where we see the ship approaching its fateful destination of Skull Island. As the ship coasts in, we receive a message in Morse code that we are led to believe is communicating the fact that there is a warrant out for Jack Black's characters arrest.
However, this is not at all what is said. It actually says, “Show me the monkey!”
But wait, there’s more. As we are still aboard the ship, there is another fun Easter egg that can be found in the lower decks. In the scene where we pan past a collection of cages we see a cage with a sign that reads, 'Sumatran Rat Monkey.' Now, if you are a Peter Jackson fan, you will know that in Dead Alive, it was the 'Sumatran Rat Monkey that bit Lionel Cosgrove's mother turning her into a zombie.
4. 'Scarface:' 1932
We are harking back a few years for this one, but it will play a larger role in the article, too, as we move down the list. Yes, there was a portrayal of the exploits of Tony Montana before Al Pacino came along (and it was good).
In 1932, Paul Muni played the role of the high-rolling gangster. From refugee with nothing to drug lord with everything.
In the original movie, before any character was killed you would see an “X” next to the character somewhere in the preceding scene. This can be seen from start to finish and even crops up in the opening credits—setting an ominous precedent for the rest of the movie.
Did you know that E.T. is in Star Wars? Well, he is. E.T. apparently didn’t make it all the way home back in 1982 as he can clearly be found loitering with friends in George Lucas’ 1999 production of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.
In the video, you will see, E.T. and pals clearly and openly waddling around. This isn’t too surprising though when you consider that Lucas and Spielberg are actually top buddies in real life.
2. 'The Departed:' 2006
And, we are harking back to a forerunner with this one—Scarface, 1932. It would seem that Martin Scorsese was a fan of the original Scarface and decided that he, too, would pre-warn the audience of an imminent character’s death. Scorsese puts an X in each and every scene where one of his characters was destined for a premature demise.
If you look closely at the scenes that involve the characters that do not die, you will see that in the background all the lines are straight and never cross each other.
1. 'Apocalypto:' 2007
It would seem that director, Mel Gibson is a fan of Where’s Waldo as there is a moment in Apocalypto where Mel Gibson inserts Waldo.
In the theatrical version, Gibson includes a scene where Waldo can be seen lying amongst the dead bodies.
What!? The movie is a spectacularly brutal portrayal of the demise of the Mayan civilization—which is reenacted brilliantly. Yet, Gibson thought he would play a game of Where’s Waldo? I mean, I loved it, but it was very odd. It was a brilliant addition, bringing a little light hardheartedness to an otherwise brutal movie.
And, let’s not forget that unforgettable image of himself he dropped into the trailer—the one with the goofy smile and the cigarette. I think he had a lot of fun making this movie, don't you?
