An Occasionally True Story...

The Great - Amazon Prime

The Great (2020 -present).

An occasionally true story. A young Catherine the Great comes to Russia to get married to Peter III of Russia but finds herself embroiled in a world of dogmatic beliefs and customs, which she tries to alter. If you are having a lazy Sunday then I think this is the show you should watch. The Great is a historical satire series that is loosely based on the story of Catherine the Great. Cynical, witty and well brutal, The Great features some great performances from Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult.

A review of the show reads: "This flat out blew me away. So good. It's not hyperbole when I say it's the best season of period TV I've ever seen... and I watch everything. It hooks you right away with its satirical and borderline zany approach and then sinks its teeth in with some very serious and outstanding drama. The acting is first-rate... Elle Fanning carries this incredibly well. She eats up the screen and it was a breeze binge-watching this entire season as I couldn't take my eyes off her."

You can watch season one and season two with a STARZ subscription on Amazon Prime here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-Trailer-1001/dp/B0892VQ6KN/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=the+great&qid=1654199156&s=instant-video&sr=1-2

You can also watch the show on Hulu.

Huzzah!

People Just Do Nothing (2014 - 2018).

Mockumentaries are a running theme in my comfort shows. People Do Just Nothing is a mockumentary series about a group of failed MCs from West London and their passion for pirate radio, KruputFM.

With five seasons and a feature film People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan (2020), the KruputFM boys have gained a cult following and great admiration. Each episode shows how the group balances daily life, family and every struggle while running KruputFM. The show's setting is very familiar for me and a lot of people. There are often times when I'm watching it and feel as if I am back in my childhood, and I kinda love it. Not only that but if you are a fan of drum and bass or garage then you should have seen this already. Oh, and if you're a fan of the Office (whether the U.K or the U.S.) you'll probably love this too!

Wellington Paranormal (2018-2022).

It has to be said I do really love a good mockumentary and Wellington Paranormal is no exception. Wellington Paranormal follows police investigators Karen O'Leary and Mike Minogue as they track supernatural events in New Zealand. The crew look into cases of demon possession, haunted houses, blood bank robberies and even sentient fatbergs.

Created by Jemaine Clement and Paul Yates, Wellington Paranormal's journey begins in the 2014 Clement and Taika Waititi film What We Do in the Shadows (2014). The two officers appear in the feature film, acting as police officers do, but being completely oblivious to the supernatural occurrences surrounding them. What I love most about the Wellington Paranormal spin-off and the characters of O'Leary and Minogue, is that no matter what creature, demon or ghost, everything is subject to New Zealand law, and it makes for great dry comedy.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014, 2019 - present).

Another mockumentary on the list with What We Do in the Shadows. What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 New Zealand mockumentary horror comedy film written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi and the first instalment in the What We Do in the Shadows franchise. The show which is great also, if not better follows three vampires, their familiar and energy vampire Colin Robinson in Staten Island.

Witches, ghosts, curses, and modern life struggles, these vampires experience it all and so does poor Guillermo. It's hilariously written and the cast is hilarious in every sense. What I love most about this show is the dry humour and how they always causal break the fourth wall. I will always recommend this franchise, always!

Don’t forget the updog!

You can watch the film on Amazon Prime here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/What-We-Shadows-Jemaine-Clement/dp/B085WGXFXG/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=what+we+do+in+the+shadows&qid=1654204779&s=instant-video&sprefix=what+we+%2Cinstant-video%2C88&sr=1-1

If you have a TV license you can watch all three seasons on BBC iPlayer.

Merlin (2008 - 2012).

Ah, Merlin, the show that I can always re-watch. This show was on during my late childhood and early teens, and honestly, it still holds up. The CGI s a bit questionable but the story and the characters are what keep you watching. Despite the terribly aged CGI, Merlin or Arthurian legend (which it is all loosely based on) will always be timeless. When lockdown first started this was the first show I binged intently, and I've done a few binges of this show since.

For those unfamiliar with the show Merlin here is a quick summary:

Merlin is a young and powerful warlock, that has to keep his magical powers hidden as it is banned under the law of Uther Pendragon King of Camelot. He becomes a servant to Prince Arthur and together they experience many adventures. Eventually becoming King Arthur, Merlin and him are forever intertwined in their quest to save Albion.

You can binge the entire show on U.K Netflix here: https://www.netflix.com/watch/70135586?trackId=14170289&tctx=2%2C4%2C9aab4d62-e141-4734-8858-0a2bdb6fffbd-46076770%2C792ea0f8-6c66-4cda-a6fa-a32034f4419e_42202883X3XX1654204727645%2C792ea0f8-6c66-4cda-a6fa-a32034f4419e_ROOT%2C%2C%2C%2C70142436
