Learning a new language is no easy feat. Being the second most studied language in the world (just after English), French continues to rise in demand and popularity for the foreseeable future.

There comes a point in language learning in which you feel stuck in the same place. You are not quite fluent yet, but you are past the basic already. If you do not practice French on a regular basis, it is easy to slowly forget and lose all of the ability you once had.

One of the best ways of practicing and adapting to real life situations is by watching tv shows. Now only is it entertaining, but you will also learn slang, cultural nuances, and get used to hearing various accents.

If this sounds intimidating, do not worry: It is likely that you will not understand 100% of what is being said. I would recommend having French subtitles on if you are not fully fluent. Just focus on what you do understand and look for the context around the scenes.

If you are having a hard time to follow along, just switch over to English subtitles and try to make up your own list of words to look up in the dictionary (or Google Translate) afterwards!

We are so lucky to have so many tools at our disposal, with global accessible content at our fingertips. So to help you in your learning journey, I have put together a list of my top 3 recommendations of French tv shows you can watch on Netflix… And no, Emily in Paris does not count:

Dix pour cent

Call My Agent! is an entertaining show, portraying the challenges of agency life and bringing a famous French actor/actress on every episode. You will laugh at the various ups and downs of family troubles, lovers, and how far agents will go for their talent.

While there may be some specific professional language in the script, the general conversations are pretty casual and you will be able to follow along if you have an intermediate level of French. On top of that, you will become familiar with many well known French celebrities, like Jean Dujardin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jean Reno, and more.

Lupin

The Second season of Lupin is just out! The wonderful Omar Sy (you might have seen him in the movie The Intouchables) plays Assane Diop, who styles himself after Arsène Lupin, a fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise.

Based on the novel series of the same name, Lupin is a witty mystery show. Just when you think the main character is in trouble, that is when he surprises you. With a touch of romance, comedy, and fast-paced, Lupin is an easy series to marathon over a weekend.

H

H is an older show, but no less fun. I would almost consider it to be a variation of Grey’s Anatomy, except in French, and WAY less serious. Actually, the only thing in common with Grey’s is that they work in a hospital.

The straightforward humour of the show is not made for everyone, but it makes it easy to watch. The various characters, their quirkiness, and random weird situations will also grow on you throughout the seasons.

Et voilà ! I hope you enjoy discovering some of these French shows. It is great to that you get to practice and improve your language skills along the way. You might be amazed by the difference in your understanding from the beginning to the end. Profitez bien :-)
