10º – The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)

A reputable wiretap specialist has the mission to investigate for some time a man and a woman at the request of the representative of a large company. Always involved in a solitary routine, living alone in his apartment and without friends, the man will become completely obsessed with the content of the wiretaps, creating a conspiratorial paranoia that may not be so unfounded. A masterpiece in all his aspects of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, ‘The Conversation’ is a detail of every meander that cinema has to offer, creating a story that manages to creep the spectator out even when working with cadenced scenes focused on small details. The film also presents one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema, with actor Gene Hackman explaining what is most beautiful and tragic about his character and the human species.

9º – The Firm (Sydney Pollack, 1993)

A young lawyer is given the opportunity to work for a large corporation. However, shortly after starting his new job, the young man will realize that the inside of the company was much more gloomy than he had thought. ‘The Firm’ raises an aura of tension from the first to the last minute of the film, bringing a Tom Cruise at his best.

8º – Night Moves (Arthur Penn, 1975)

A private investigator is hired by a woman whose teenage daughter had disappeared, having to fit into the intricacies of the girl’s mysterious disappearance. The film gains its substance when the man begins to face, as the investigation progresses, a degeneration of all of the apparatuses of his life, with his wife betraying him, his turbulent past returning to the surface, and his day to day more and more empty. A neglected masterpiece of the 1970s, ‘Night Moves’ is a film that impresses with the rigor of its irrefutable script, the productive direction of Arthur Penn and the powerful performance of Gene Hackman, working to investigate the dead end that is the life of a middle-aged man in his character’s situation.

7º – JFK (Oliver Stone, 1991)

The film follows the investigation on the assassination of President Kennedy, exploring each meander about one of the most remarkable facts of the 20th century. ‘JFK’ is one of the best films with a biographical theme ever conceived. Its director, the great Oliver Stone, manages to give dynamism to a genre that traditionally stands out as rustic, making the more than three hours of the film ephemeral, with a fantastic editing work.

6º – The Pelican Brief (Alan J. Pakula, 1993)

In the plot, a law student, by mere chance, ends up discovering a great conspiracy. Now in danger, the woman must try to turn over her evidence to the authorities and stay alive. Belonging to the excellent cinema by director Alan J. Pakula, the film is dynamic from beginning to end, raising a story permeated by nuances and twists.

5º – All the President’s Men (Alan J. Pakula, 1976)

The film follows the investigation of some reporters of an American newspaper about unprecedented scandals in the country’s politics. ‘All the President’s Men’ manages to be pleasant by transposing to the public a cadenced plot, without much action in its events, giving even more weight to history.

4º – Dark City (Alex Proyas, 1998)

Suffering from amnesia, a man finds himself persecuted by the authorities of a strange city. As he advances in his escape and his search for answers, the man will discover unimaginable things about the origin of that place and its real purpose. ‘Dark City’ raises a Noir atmosphere for the unfolding of the plot events, leading us through a truly fascinating story.

3º – The Fugitive (Andrew Davis, 1993)

Accused falsely of the murder of his wife, a man must flee from the authorities as well as find the clues to the real killer. ‘The Fugitive’ is one of the best action films ever conceived. Everything here works. Action scenes conducted in a magical manner, a fantastic antagonist, a plot that is shaped assertively and a central cast at its best.

2º – The Ghost Writer (Roman Polanski, 2010)

A ghost writer, entrusted with the mission of writing a biography of a former English prime minister, ends up getting involved in a game of deception when he ends up discovering things that should remain hidden. ‘The Ghost Writer’, an underrated film in Polanski’s filmography, is the best in the genre of suspense. The film leverages an atmosphere of unique mystery, which acts by giving dynamism to all the elements contained in the plot.

1º – Presumed Innocent (Alan J. Pakula, 1990)

After a colleague is murdered, a lawyer begins to investigate the ins and outs of the case, only to find that all the evidence points directly to himself. Dynamic in each attack, ‘Presumed Innocent’ is a classic suspense, bringing together all the more traditional elements of the genre, with a concise and surprising plot.
