Pikachu is on the case!

2019 had some pretty epic and highly anticipated films all come out one after another, and for many Detective Pikachu was a surprise box office hit. Now that is not me saying I was expecting the film to flop, but the general consensus was concerned to say the least. As historically any films adapted from video games tend to meet a massive backlash that would make even the toughest game avatar fall to a one hit KO. But, Detective Pikachu did the unthinkable and created a movie that pretty much everyone who has seen it has enjoyed.

The movie showcased for the first time anywhere live-action versions of many of the beloved Pocket Monsters, including Charizard, Squirtle, Mewtwo and of course Pikachu. But in total, only 54 species of Pokémon appeared in the movie out of the 890 Pokémon in existence. With the amount of CGI required to pull off the movie, we can forgive them for limiting themselves. I mean 54 is still a pretty impressive number of Pokémon to bring to life. But with the sequel now green lit and going, we must now ask, which Pokémon will they choose to appear? Here we will look at 10 likely contenders that we might see in the sequel.

10. Charjabug

#737 Charjabug

For a small electric grub, Charjabug is a good choice to appear in a sequel. The main reason being, in the games and anime it has been made clear that this little Bug Type Pokémon can act as a battery. So, given that Detective Pikachu will have a crime to solve in the sequel, you could imagine how easy it would be for the villain to be using this Pokémon to power some sort of device. Let's hope we can get a good charge going in the sequel for this lil guy.

9. Umbreon

#197 Umbreon

Detective Pikachu showcased the fan favourite Eevee evolving into a Flareon during the first movie. Now, I do not suggest we see another Eevee evolve in the sequel, but Umbreon is perhaps the most popular Eeveelution from Pokémon. With that, I am certain it would be a safe bet to see this dark pup in action in Detective Pikachu 2. If my prayers were truly being answered, it would be a shiny Umbreon, but a regular one would easily please me and many others.

8. Garbodor

#569 Garbodor

OK, this Pokémon may not be a Gengar in levels of popularity, but if you think about Detective Pikachu as a film you can see how it could slip in there. Say clues have led Pikachu and the gang to a garbage pile looking for clues and some Pokémon there can help them find that clue...yep you're seeing them aren't you. Garbodor could bring some love in live-action form as they show appearances don't matter and aid the protagonists to a vital clue.

7. Gengar

#94 Gengar

Seeing as I mentioned him above, if they included this cheeky ghost in the sequel fans worldwide would scream. Gengar is one of the most beloved Pokémon from the entire franchise and with so many contenders fighting for fan love, that is impressive. The added bonus with Gengar is it would open up the chances for either Mega Evolution or Gigantamax forms being debuted in the sequel as this naughty ghoul can do both!

6. Inteleon

#818 Inteleon

Now given that Detective Pikachu opened up the world of crime within the Pokémon world, you have to wonder if the they will feature a new detective to act as a rival to our gang from the first film. If they do, Inteleon could be a perfect partner for a rival detective, especially given its clear inspiration from classic crime novels such as James Bond. They could even opt to bring a secret agent into Detective Pikachu 2 as it would offer some interesting dynamics between the characters and Inteleon could act as the agent's partner.

5. Raichu

#26 Raichu

With Pikachu being the mascot behind the entire franchise, you have to feel sorry for his forgotten evolution of Raichu. Fans have always liked the electric mouse on steroids version of Pikachu, but it has never been given the attention many feel it deserves due to Pikachu's status. Hopefully Detective Pikachu 2 can give Raichu a break and feature him, perhaps as the partner Pokémon to Henry's new superior.

4. Hydreigon

#635 Hydreigon

The first film did a nice job of using a Ditto as the Pokémon partner for the primary villain, but this leads us to wanting another Pokémon to take his place. Hydreigon would fit that position as it is a ferocious three headed Dark Type dragon. But what would even be better would be to get a Dragon Type Pokémon in the sequel, as no Dragon Types appeared at all in the first film.

3. Sceptile

#254 Sceptile

Charizard, Blastoise, Greninja & Torterra all pleased fans by appearing in the first film. These Pokémon all being final forms for some of the Start Pokémon from the various generations. However, one big fan favourite was absent and that was Sceptile. Sceptile has been a fan favourite ever since generation three and surely this Pocket Monster appearing in a sequel will please so many movie goers that those behind the film would have no regrets from including him.

2. Metagross

#376 Metagross

Metagross is a tank of a Steel/Psychic Type that he is a must have for many Pokémon fan to have in their roster. But the benefit of Metagross is how it could be used by either a good trainer or a villainous trainer. It is a Pokémon that would fit with either, a mad scientist or a disciplined trainer, both would work. Add this to the popularity it holds by fans, you would hear the cheers across the world as people watch this Pokémon appear in Detective Pikachu 2.

Before we get to #1. Lugia

#249 Lugia

OK, I admit it, this is cheating to make the list a total of 11, but I had to include at least one Legendary Pokémon on the list. With the first film featuring Mewtwo, perhaps the most sought out Legendary by players, it is safe to say another Legendary Pokémon will appear in the sequel. This must mean we will see Lugia, who is a Legendary that has been much loved by the fandom ever since it first appeared in the second animate Pokémon Movie, Pokémon: The Power of One.

1. Lapras

#131 Lapras

Now one icon from the first generation of games was absent, the beautiful Lapras. This can be forgiven as the majority of the first film took place within a city, but hopefully the sequel can start exploring other environments to showcase even more Pokémon. Lapras would be a massive hit if shown in the sequel as many players have dreamt of owning a Lapras and being able to set sail across the seas looking for adventure.
