2021 started with us still being very much deep in the middle of a global pandemic and just beginning to slowly seep back into the light. That meant of course that movie goers were trepidatious about going back into the cinema. The fear from the public, lockdowns, and restrictions made creating and promoting movies in 2021 quite the arduous task but now, with the year coming to an end, we're happy to return that the movies still did quite well this year and it is in fact NOT the end of cinema as we know it.

Here are the 10 Biggest Movies 2021 had to offer and how much each one of them made! (All box office numbers are from the latest reports as at the time of this story's creation: December 30, 2021.)

10. Dwindle

Dwindle is 2021 Nigerian comedy film based on the story of Sogo and Buta, two friends who hijack a car and venture into cabbing and how their lives take a drastic turn when their path runs into assassins who have just kidnapped the state governor. The movie stars top name actors such as Funke Akindele-Bello, Bisola Aiyeola, Broda Shaggi, and more.

Dwindle made N43,924,110 in the box office.

9. Soòlé

The Adunni Ade produced Soòlé tells the story of a group of people from different walks of life who meet in a bus on their way home for Christmas, and find themselves entangled in a cat-and-mouse game with criminals. The movie filled with twists and turns stars Sola Sobowale, Adunni Ade, Lateef Adedimeji, and a host of other actors.

Soòlé made N48,671,200 in the box office.

8. Bad Comments

Jim Iyke's gift to the world, Bad Comments, is a movie that tells the story of a well-loved celebrity who gets his life upturned after he comes under attack by online trolls and bad press that sends his life into a spiral. Bad Comments stars Jim Iyke, Osas Ighodaro, Chiwetalu Agu, and more.

Bad Comments made N66,584,531 in the box office.

7. Aki & Pawpaw

The 2021 reboot of the classic Aki and Pawpaw movie sees Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedezie reprise their roles as the iconic duo 19 years later, and get into some new mischief. The new movie stars Toyin Abraham, Real Warri Pikin, and more.

Aki & Pawpaw has so far made N80,434,876 in the box office.

6. Breaded Life

Biodun Stephen's Breaded Life tells the story of an irresponsible young man in conflict with his mother who wakes up one day and to his surprise, has no-one recognize him, except for a local bread hawker. The movie stars Timini Egbuson, Bimbo Ademoye, Tina Mba, and more.

Breaded Life made N88,860,057 in the box office.

5. Ayinla

Ayinla is a movie that tells the story of Nigerian musician, Ayinla Omowura, who used Apala music to address issues of the contemporary society - commending and criticizing various governmental and individual acts. The movie stars Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Afolayan, Bimbo Ademoye, and more.

Ayinla made N91,308,900 in the box office.

4. Christmas in Miami

Comedian AY's Christmas movie of this year is Christmas in Miami, a movie that tells the story of the now famous character Akpos jetting off with his family to the exotic city of Miami, Florida to represent Nigeria at the Intercontinental Christmas Fiesta, a unifying Fiesta that will bring together 6 families from 6 very diverse nations across 5 continents, to spend the week leading up to Christmas together, on an exotic island in Miami, USA. As you can expect Akpos gets into all manner of mayhem during his time in Miami and in this movie he carries along actors Richard Mofe-Damijo and Osita Iheme in the mayhem.

Christmas in Miami has already made N100,714,675 in the box office.

3. My Village People

From one comedian to the next, Bovi stepped into the position of leading man in this year thriller offering, My Village People. The movie tells the story of Prince, a young man whose weaknesses for women eventually lands him in trouble as he is caught in a bizarre love triangle with witches. The movie stars Bovi, Nkem Owoh, Amaechi Muonagor, and more.

My Village People made N100,958,400 in the box office.

2. Prophetess

One of the most polarizing movies of the year ended up being one of the biggest. Niyi Akinmolayan's Prophetess tells the story of Ajoke, a prophetess in a small rural town who makes predictions about the future in exchange for money. Things go south when Ajoke finds her life in danger at the hands of Eze-Ego, the owner of the popular betting company Sure Banka. Prophetess stars Toyin Abraham, Kehinde Bankole, Stan Nze, and more.

Prophetess made N131,441,252 in the box office.

1. The Ghost and The Tout Too

It is no secret at this point that actress Toyin Abraham is a cinema magnet. Her movies seem to get people out of their houses and into cinema seats and this year, she has done it once again, acquiring the top position of the year with her movie, The Ghost and The Tout Too. This movie, a sequel to 2018's The Ghost and The Tout, tells the story of a woman who can reluctantly communicate with ghosts trying to help the spirit of a woman whose body is in a coma. The movie stars Toyin Abraham, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, and more.

The Ghost and The Tout Too raked in N134,408,075 this year securing the top position as the year comes to an end.
