It was 1997 that the world was given Final Fantasy VII, a RPG that holds the record for most sales in the Final Fantasy series. A game that is so beloved that a remake was brought up during the birth of the PS3 in 2006 when Square wanted to showcase the graphics by remaking the intro scene of FFVII. 12 years later we get definitive proof of FFVII being remade and the gaming community went nuts in joy. I was ecstatic over the news because it was my favorite game of all time and I have played many great games. I will get into why Final Fantasy VII will always remain the best but first let's rank the main titles and my reason for why they are ranked the way they are. This list will not include the tactics games, fighting games or the online games but the sequels for 10 and 13 will be among the list.

Final Fantasy 2 - was made in 1988 and released only in Japan when first made. The game was poorly received due to the battle mechanics and leveling up system. The story itself was interesting enough for the beginning standards of the series and the main Villain was pretty cool because he conquers both Heaven and Hell after he is initially killed. However the leveling up system and late release in America that officially kills the game.

Final Fantasy 3 - was made in 1990 and was also not released in America. This game was difficult for players because there was no revive system for party members and the normal sleeping at an inn didn't revive them. The game was overly difficult and the story was not particularly memorable. There was no character development as all of the characters were named Onion Knight. The remake gave actual identities but by this point there were far better Final Fantasy games to play.

Final Fantasy 13-3 - Final Fantasy 13 . . . oh boy can we say a truly screw up game for the ps3 that just ruined the franchise. As bad as 13 was, 13-3 was twice as bad for one main reason. You are JESUS!!!! Literally you just go around like Sherlock homes and solve problems to save the souls of the people. They don't even matter really because all of your friends who you save are the only souls you really need. For those who may not have played, this is what happened. The main God of the game sets Lightning out to keep the tree of life, Yggdrasil, alive for a set amount of days and you do this by giving it saved souls. Each of your friends has a main quest and it grants you the tree extending souls but you will be short by one day at the end so you need to save the souls of some regular people. Once done, you face God and kill him. This game was so small and short that it was a mockery. It is by far one of the worst Final Fantasy games I ever played and was clearly not the original design for Square but they had to finish the series somehow and they crapped this out.

Final Fantasy 4 - I really liked FFIV but it is not particularly memorable. It was originally known as FF2 in the USA because of the titles that were and weren't released in America. The game has a good lead character who goes through a great character developing story but ultimately there are better games int he series.

Final Fantasy 12 - Ironically enough I have FF12 as number 12. This game was the start of the Final Fantasy series apocalypse. It was a terrible game for so many reasons. The Main character is an annoying brat, his best friend is annoying and looks like she is 6. The only cool Character is Balthier the sky pirate but even he can't make up for the crap factor of the game. The story is just a typical band of rebels vs the empire story. You see the villain Vayne the entire time and think yea he is the fake main villain and it will really end up being like Reks or Ashe's late husband's ghost and in the end who is the villain? Vayne. The evil politician who kicks you and then turns into Nacho Libre. It was an all to predictable game with a bland story and hardly any character development. The saving grace for it was the battle system that was almost nearly perfect.

Final Fantasy 13 - yes this is better than 12 but not by much. The difference is like having food poisoning vs having the flu. 13 had a GREAT concept like 10 with the false religion tricking the people but they ****** it up with the battle system and the linear world. The music was just as BAD! Vanille for example, her theme would make the happiest person on earth consider suicide. There was no real character development except for Hope and Fang, more so Hope. The concept of the Fal'Cie and the L'cie were amazing and I love the direction they went and the final boss, Orphan but all of the good things make up 10% of the game and the rest is just too much to deal with.

#10

Final Fantasy 10-2 - This was a much anticipated sequel to 10 and it just disappointed. They made Yuna dress like a hooker for no real reason other than she is now more liberated and less religious. The story had Merit with the search for Tidus leading Yuna to fighting an Unsent who is identical to him though more muscular and evil but I think the evil version is more attractive. My main issue besides the story progression is the final boss being a giant moth.

#9

Final Fantasy 1 - This game was the corner stone of the series and deserves a legacy position in the top 10. At the time there were other notable RPG's like Dragon Warrior which was fantastic but Final Fantasy 1 had a larger story and made you feel like a part of a great mission. The first game truly deserves a remake with an expanded story and character development.

#8

Final Fantasy 9 - I know you fan boys are screaming right now!!! However, replay the game, it has a very boring story and no character development except to Vivi, the best character of the game. The story led to the end fight with Kuja but rather than give him a second form, they created dark side Yoda who comes out of nowhere and quotes Star Wars. The battle is cool and had Necron been developed and mentioned he would have been a nice final boss.

#7

Final Fantasy 6 - This is really killing the fan boys right? Listen, you like 6 so much for the same reason 7 is loved so much, it was your first next gen Final Fantasy that had stunning graphics for the time. Final Fantasy 6 suffers the same fate as others and it has no character development. The final boss is also boring. Keffka is a complete fool with no motive. In the end even after you win, the world is destroyed so it is a worthless victory. There is no clear cut person as the main character as virtually none of them have a true place in the end as a needed character. The game was still quite good despite the poor excuse of character development.

#6

Final Fantasy 5 - I rather liked Final Fantasy 5. The story isn't special but there is good character development, the job system is done quite well despite taking a long time to level up the many jobs. The final boss is terrible in terms of difficulty but if you level up properly it is a satisfying end fight. The story has a good flow and keeps you interested even if it is just a rehashing of 3 and 4.

#5

Final Fantasy 13-2 - you might be surprised this one is up so high but 13-2 is wonderfully done. You play as Lightning's sister and Noel, a boy from the future. You also tame monsters that can be present in your battles. The story involves time travel and is well written. The character development is amazing for everyone in the story, heroes and villain. It has a sad ending that tugs at your heart strings but also leaves off for another game you expect to be good but are sadly given 13-3 a POS. 13-2 is not well known for it being good because most don't give it a chance because of the horror of 13 but 13-2 has great replay value.

#4

Final Fantasy 15 - I know, WHAT?!?!?!?!? However it is true. 15, originally named 13 versus was a massive 10 year long wait and the game was too short to be worth it. The game is good and the story is average. The cast of characters are cool and with the added DLC you get much needed character development for the companions of Noctis. The summoning system is the biggest flaw of the game besides the extreme shortness of it. One of the DLC's attempt to make the final boss sympathetic but it just annoyed me. I don't want to feel sorry for him and why he became evil. Overall the game is excellent and I have replayed it many times but it is so short that it BEGS for an expansion DLC beyond the small episodes we got from Square.

#3

Final Fantasy 8 - This one surprised even me. It wasn't long ago that I detested 8 as one of the worst but I replayed it a few years ago and realized how much I was dumb with regarding battle and stat mechanics. Once I figured out I was an idiot when I was a kid, I grew to like the game. The story is odd and to make it better I go with the Ultimecia is Rinoah theory or the infinite accidental time loop theory. This game is really good but does suffer with poor character development beyond the main character who's own development is hastened suddenly.

#2

Final Fantasy 10 - Is there any doubt as to why this one is so high? It was the first with voice acting, it had an amazing story, great character development and one of the best battle systems of the original battle type. The many villains were all amazing, especially Yunalesca but there was one small fault with the game and that was the final boss . . . Yu-Yevon. He was a bug and there was no real threat of dying. That is what keeps Final Fantasy 10 from being #1.

#1

Final Fantasy 7 - Yes, Final Fantasy 7 is the best and will always remain the best. It was the revolutionary Final Fantasy that jumped into the cinematic age. The story kept you on the edge of your seat at all times. The mythology of Final Fantasy VII left you wanting more and each step you got closer to uncovering more truths the closer you got to pure bliss for gaming. The main villain was a tragic villain which makes him one of the best. His greatness is increased when you realize that he was manipulating the other main villain the whole time, named Jenova, who was thought to be the one controlling Sephiroth and his clones. Final Fantasy 7 was beloved and a remake was demanded for years and we are finally getting it! Square denied that 7 would ever be made because they said if Final Fantasy 7 got a remake they would never be able to outsell it but here we are in 2020 with our remake coming out in April!!!

Final Fantasy VII remains the top title and while everyone might have different opinions, facts can't change that 7 holds the title of most sold copies and best story. This just my opinion of course on my ranking but Most would agree that 7 is #1.
