We Need a Marvel Fighting Game

A Direct Response to DC's Injustice Franchise

It's a fairly common opinion that DC's fighting game franchise "Injustice" was and arguably still is a huge success, with rumors of another installment possibly coming into fruition for the next-gen consoles. DC isn't currently the most paraded when it comes to it cinematic success, not like its long-lasting rival Marvel who has been dominating the box offices since the release of the first "Iron Man" film back in 2008 to its last release in 2019, "Spider-Man: Far From Home". But one could argue that the DC has made its mark in the videogame world, particularly the fighting game world just as much, if not more than Marvel has.

Of course, Marvel has its share of classic fighting game titles thanks to their collaborative work with videogame giant CAPCOM but DC had the help of the legendary fighting game brand known as NetherRealm Studios, the company that brought the almost seemingly immortal fighting game franchise, "Mortal Kombat" which made its debut in arcades around the world in 1992 and having its very latest release of its 18th series release believe it or not (with the inclusion of remasters and collection editions). Among these titles made by the fighting game gods, DC has a very memorable collaborative masterpiece, fondly loved by MK and DC fans alike known as "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe" which released almost 13 years ago in 2008 as well as the aforementioned installments of the "Injustice" series.

Why hasn't Marvel combated this with a independent fighting title of their own? One that pits the might of its superpowered champions against each other. Imagine the agility of characters like Black Panther, Wolverine, and Spider-Man up against the raw strength of characters like Luke Cage, The Thing, and of course the Incredible Hulk? But not unlike the premise of Injustice, all the characters have something within them, explained in the narrative of the game itself that levels the playing field so guys like Hawkeye aren't installing flattened by heavy hitters like Hercules or Thor. Who doesn't wanna have the chance to beat Thor into submission with a weaker character like Spider-Man? Or to see allies turned into foe? To see Mr. Fantastic put against the Human Torch? All in a similar style presented to us by the people who brought us the opportunity to beat the snot out of Superman while controlling the likes of Aquaman.

Marvel could certainly pour a generous amount of their cinematic revenue unflinchingly in order to create a game that could definitely rival the likes of the critically acclaimed franchise DC brought to us nearly 8 years ago with its follow up game releasing in 2017. With the bustling popularity of Marvel's brand, this is more than a money move, this would be revolutionary in the gaming world due to the fact that if they put the same effort and time they have put into their films, they could build a massive fighting game franchise that could easily utilize the growing popularity of the concept of a blossoming multiverse, bringing many different dynamics to the franchise itself. If done even remotely like the films as far as narrative goes and character development goes, it could crush the "Injustice" franchise. The only concern I would have with a Marvel fighting game franchise is the execution of the gameplay and the design of the characters, other than that, the only thing I can say now is WHAT IS MARVEL WAITING FOR?
