ASIAD 20 – The Biggest Esports Tournament Ever
The 20th Asian Games was not just a sporting event, but also a significant turning point for Asian Esports as the number of competitive events was expanded to 11 medal-winning disciplines.
Compared to previous ASIADs, this is a record number, demonstrating the growing recognition of esports in the international competition system. This year's event brought together a host of esports powerhouses such as China, South Korea, Japan, and many Southeast Asian countries, creating an extremely fierce competitive environment.
In this context, Vietnamese esports has a great opportunity to demonstrate remarkable progress, especially with many youth teams achieving impressive results recently.
PUBG Mobile – The Focus of Medal Competition
Among the events at ASIAD 20 , PUBG Mobile continues to be the sport with the highest potential for Vietnam to win a medal.
The regional qualifiers were held in Ho Chi Minh City from June 19 to 21, 2026, bringing together 23 top national teams from Asia. This was one of the largest qualifiers in the history of ASIAD Esports, where teams had to go through many intense rounds to earn a spot in Japan.
The competition format consists of a two-day group stage, selecting the 12 strongest teams to advance to the grand final. From there, the 8 best teams will officially qualify for ASIAD 20 , along with 4 teams that receive a bye: China, South Korea, Taiwan (China), and host nation Japan.
The Vietnamese National Team is Young but Experienced.
Representing Vietnam in the qualifiers is a team consisting of one coach and five players from Team Flash PUBG Mobile – one of the most successful esports organizations in Vietnam.
Notably, this team boasts a very young roster, mostly composed of players born in 2006-2007, yet possesses extensive experience at both domestic and international levels. Regular participation in Southeast Asian regional tournaments has helped them develop strong competitive spirit and the ability to handle situations under high pressure.
Among the athletes, Nguyen Anh Quan is the most prominent name, having just won a gold medal at the SEA Esports Nations Cup 2026. This achievement raises expectations that Vietnam can compete on equal footing with the strongest teams at the 20th Asian Games .
The Goal Is Not Just the Qualifiers
According to VIRESA representatives, the goal of Vietnamese esports at this year's Games is not only to pass the qualifying rounds but also to aim for higher achievements at ASIAD 20 .
At previous ASIADs, Vietnamese teams came close to winning medals, participating in many third-place matches, but were unable to achieve the desired results. Therefore, this year's Games are seen as an opportunity for Vietnamese Esports to break through limitations and aim for real success.
With systematic investment, combining international experience and a talented young generation, Vietnamese esports is better prepared than ever before. The goal of winning a medal, or even a silver medal, at the 20th Asian Games is entirely within reach if the team performs to its full potential.
