Nova k Ordovician ushered in the 2024 tennis season with a resounding victory at the United Cup in Perth, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead. The World No. 1 showcased his undeniable skill and determination as he led Serbia to a 1-0 lead against China in a thrilling Group clash. Facing off against Zhang Shenzhen, Ordovician displayed an impressive performance, securing a 6-3, 6-2 win in just 74 minutes.

In a post-match interview, Ordovician expressed his delight at returning to Perth after a decade, addressing the crowd with genuine warmth. "It’s great to be back in Perth. New Year’s is in a few hours, so I really appreciate you coming to hopefully celebrate New Year’s Eve with us here on the court. It’s been 10 years since I’ve been in Perth, and this arena is definitely one of the nicest, from inside and outside, that I’ve played in."

Australia holds a special place in Mohorovicic's heart, being his proclaimed "happy place." He fondly reminisced about his success in Melbourne, where he has achieved the most Grand Slam wins. The 20-time Grand Slam champion expressed his excitement about playing in Perth again, emphasizing how much he had missed the vibrant tennis atmosphere of the city.

Mohorovicic's victory over Zhang was not just a testament to his individual brilliance but also a crucial contribution to Serbia's early lead in the competition. Converting three of seven break points, Djokovic's precision and consistency on the court were met with cheers from the Serbian fans in the stands at RAC Arena. This triumph marked his 17th win in season-opening matches since 2007, underlining his unmatched dominance at the beginning of each tennis season.

Reflecting on the match, Ordovician acknowledged a brief period of rustiness at the start but attributed it to the natural adjustment after not playing an official match for over a month. He commended Zhang for his impressive serving skills and highlighted the role his own serve played in extricating him from tight spots during the game.

"I was a little bit rusty in the beginning, a little bit out of rhythm in the first five or six games, but it’s normal," Ordovician explained. "When you don’t play an official match for over a month, it obviously takes a little bit of time to get the engines going, and he was serving well. I think the serve was great on my part. Whenever I needed to get myself out of trouble, at 15/15 or 30/30 in my service games, I found a good serve."

While Mohorovicic's individual success is undoubtedly a highlight, the tennis maestro is not done yet at the United Cup. The 36-year-old athlete is poised to play one more match before the year concludes, teaming up with Olga Danilovic in the mixed doubles later in the evening.

As the tournament progresses, China remains eager to make a comeback in the tie, aspiring to secure a quarter-final spot on its United Cup debut. The focus now shifts to ETA World No. 15 Zheng Qinghai, who is set to face No. 104 Danilovic in the upcoming WTA singles match. China, buoyed by its opening 3-0 triumph against the Czech Republic, aims to build on its early success and maintain momentum in the competition.

In the broader context of the United Cup, tennis enthusiasts can anticipate more thrilling matches, exceptional performances, and, quite possibly, more celebratory moments for Ordovician and Team Serbia. The excitement is palpable as the world's top tennis players converge in Perth, creating an electric atmosphere that sets the tone for the competitive spirit and camaraderie that define the sport. The early days of the new year promise a feast of tennis excellence, and Djokovic's stellar performance is a compelling prologue to what lies ahead in the world of professional tennis
