Many millennials will remember when the trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh! was popular many years ago. Both the card game and the original TV series were well received by fans. As of more recently, you can now play this card game from your phone. The name of the app is called Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links and it is free to download onto your mobile device.

When you first begin playing, you start by choosing one of the main characters from the show along with their default deck. As you play more and more computer opponents, you’ll receive different cards which enable you to build a more personal and customizable deck. All the same rules to the original card game are applied in the app. You can summon normal/effect monsters that are level 1 through 4 directly to the field and tribute summon monsters with higher levels.

In general, you want to have a deck that has a good proportion of monster, trap, and spell cards. More specifically, you want to make sure you have enough level 1 through 4 monsters so that you will be able to eventually summon more powerful monsters onto the field. If you load your deck with only level 5 monsters and above, then you will not be able to perform tribute summons, which would be required to summon those higher level monsters.

Traditionally, you would have to meet up with a friend in person to play this card game. However, thanks to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links app, you can request to duel someone online from your home. Similarly, you can duel one of your friends who plays on the app by requesting a friend duel.

Playing this app on your phone is a good way to take a short break from chores and other responsibilities while still keeping your brain active. Winning a duel against an opponent requires thinking through every move and understanding how one card affects another. With this comes a handful of reading. Each card contains text on it and it should be read thoroughly so the duelist can understand what the card does on the overall playing field. For instance, if you summon a monster that’s weaker than your opponents, you’ll want to ensure that you have a card that will make your monster stronger. In general, the player should plan every move accordingly based on the dueling field. If you play your cards right, then you will be able to win a duel against your opponent.

In addition to simply requesting a one time duel with another player online, there are also tournaments available within the game. (I haven’t played in any of the tournaments yet but I’ll plan to at some point in the future.)

A nice extra feature of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links app is that you can acquire new cards by saving up enough gems on the app by playing the game. Optionally, you can choose to purchase new cards in the app. (Personally, I prefer to just use the gems for new cards.)

Regardless of the approach, it’s important to get more cards because this will help you build a stronger deck and win against hard opponents whether they are other players or computers within the game. One of the toughest opponents you can choose to duel in the game is known as the Vagabond. These computers are highly skilled with well assembled decks. One card’s effect will easily allow them to turn the duel around in their favor. Therefore, it’s important that you bring your very best when you challenge a Vagabond.
