Tamim Iqbal considered Bangladesh's best batter in history, will not be traveling to the 2023 World Cup with his team because of a chronic back injury. Before choosing the final roster, Tamim had reportedly told the selectors a few days earlier that he had a back problem they should be aware of.

The absence was justified by BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin, who said, "We are all aware that Tamim Iqbal is a long-term injury issue. For the New Zealand series, he came back. After the first game, there was some dissatisfaction. When we decided not to include him in the squad, we considered his injury worry. Before making this choice, we communicated with everyone who was affected. We talked about it with Tamim. We are unable to divulge what was said. We talked about it with the team management and decided against taking a chance during a protracted World Cup campaign. It is a significant occasion.

On September 23, Tamim scored 44 runs in the second one-day international against New Zealand, his first outing since changing his mind about retiring from international cricket in July. Additionally, a layoff due to an injury led him to miss the Asia Cup.

The World Cup team was supposed to be announced at 5:45 pm on Tuesday, but the BCB later postponed the announcement until after the third ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand. The extra couple of hours fueled rumors that a last-minute alteration may occur, but it wasn't to be.

After the New Zealand game, Tamim disclosed that he was still experiencing back pain, which the team's physios were attempting to alleviate.

Tamim and several other members of the ODI team were selected for rest for the third game against New Zealand by the medical staff.

With some injuries, you can't take a chance, according to Abedin. "The management of the team would be put in an awkward position if someone were to sustain an injury during the World Cup. We had to rest him after he played in the first two games. After the second game, he was in a little discomfort. We gave it some thought before making a choice.

Tamim is one of our top players, but he is limited by an injury. The New Zealand series provided an opportunity to test his fitness because he had long-term back pain. He completely participated in the second game but skipped the third one. We talked about it with the medical staff before making a choice.

With Shakib Al Hasan leading the way as captain, the rest of the Bangladeshi team is largely expected. Tanzid Hasan will be Litton Das' assistant's opening partner, and Najmul Hossain Shanto will be the chosen No. 3 player. The middle order will consist of Shakib, Towhid Hridoy, and Mushfiqur Rahim, while Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan can bat in the medium to lower order.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has batted this year in four different positions in ODIs, will remain the floater. Mehidy's primary position has been at No. 7, but he may open in some games.

Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, and Tanzim Hasan are the members of the pace assault. Nasum Ahmed, a left-arm spinner, made it into the World Cup roster following a late comeback and some recent strong performances in the Asia Cup.

Four members of the 2020 Under-19 World Cup champion team—Hridoy, Shoriful, Tanzid, and Tanzim—are on the roster.

Tamim's absence from Bangladesh's World Cup roster very certainly signifies his final ODI match. Between 2007 and 2020, he opened matches for Bangladesh in all three forms, culminating in an illustrious career for the team. He has amassed the most runs for them in ODIs and helped the current team qualify for the World Cup. Tamim, however, ended his career as an international cricket player on July 6 due to a string of injuries and accusations of incompetence from BCB president Nazmul Hassan.

World Cup Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto (vice-capt), Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan, Tanzid Hasan, Tanzim Hasan, Mahmudullah
