Fans wanted it, Lucasfilm Games and Aspyr answered the call. Star Wars: Republic Commando is coming to the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and the Playstation 5 (via backwards compatibility) in 2021! Considered one of the best Star Wars video games of all-time, Republic Commando is the latest rerelease announced by Lucasfilm Games. To celebrate this announcement, let us look at details of Republic Commando's history, the company bringing us the digital reissue, port enhancement details, and the price and release date.

Star Wars: Republic Commando History

First released in 2005 on Xbox and Microsoft Windows, Star Wars: Republic Commando is considered the best Star Wars video game of all-time and has reached cult classic status. The reason for that love is easy to see. A first-person Star Wars military-style game was just what the doctor ordered to immerse fans more in-depth into the Clone Wars storyline. Republic Commando delivered incredible immersion with fun characters, a tight squad control system, an entertaining storyline, and a killer soundtrack.

Republic Commando was the first Star Wars game that included licensed music. The end credit song, "Clones" by the band Ash, was the featured song. Listen to the song below.

A sequel to Republic Commando titled Star Wars: Imperial Commando was planned before Republic Commando's production even started. Imperial Commando storyline would have put the player in the Empire's army as a member of the elite guard. Sadly, the game never saw the light of day. With only some concept art to show for its existence, Imperial Commando was canceled. Check out some of the concept art below.

Republic Commando Publisher: Aspyr

Aspyr, founded in 1996, started their game development company to port games to the macOS. In 2005, Aspyr opened their company up to develop and publish games for multiple consoles. Aspyr kicked off their new publishing direction with Wideload Games' Stubbs The Zombie's release in 2005.

While zombie games are fantastic, Aspyr has found their niche the last few years porting Star Wars games. One of my favorite Aspyr ports was Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic on the iOS platform. That port averages a 4.3-star review on the app store, an impressive feat for porting such a popular game to a portable device. Aspyr went on to port more Star Wars games in recent times. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and Star Wars Episode 1: Racer have all been ported to Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 since 2019.

With the quality of ports Aspyr produces, confidence in buying a copy of Star Wars: Republic Commando should be high for all fans. For a complete list of Aspyr titles, click here.

Star Wars: Republic Commando Enhancements

The gameplay has not changed in this version of Star Wars: Republic Commando. Still, Aspyr was able to add a few modern things to this remastered version of the game. The controls have been updated to feel right on modern controllers, specifically the DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers. Aspyr also added new trophies to the game, giving trophy hunters even more incentive to play the doors off this game.

Star Wars: Republic Commando Release Date & Pricing

Time to get to the most essential information: pricing and release date.

With yesterday's announcement, pre-orders began immediately on the Nintendo Switch. However, after searching the Playstation Store, Star Wars: Republic Commando was not listed for pre-order at the time of this writing. The game is priced at $14.99 on the Nintendo Eshop, and the price-point will be the same on the Playstation Store.

Star Wars: Republic Commando will be released for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Playstation 5 on April 6, 2021. Pre-order on the Switch here.

Star Wars: Republic Commando can be purchased now on the Xbox Store for $9.99.
