Google's decision to shut down its cloud gaming service, Stadia, and refund all players' hardware and software purchases has caught many developers by surprise. It appears that Google did not inform any developers of the shutdown, likely to prevent leaks, but this has left a number of developers, especially indie ones without the resources to easily develop for additional platforms, in a difficult position. The unexpected shutdown means that these developers have invested a significant amount of time, effort, and money into a platform that no longer exists.

While the announcement of Stadia's shutdown has prompted Google to refund all players' hardware and software purchases, it has also caused problems for developers. For example, Bungie, the creator of Destiny, which is now owned by Sony, has been using Stadia to facilitate its work-from-home development process. It is unclear how the shutdown will impact Bungie's plans and whether it will continue to work with partners on Stadia's technology. Additionally, Ubisoft has invested heavily in Stadia support in the past, but it seems that even they were not given prior notice about the shutdown. The company stated that it would share more information about its games on Stadia at a later date. The unexpected shutdown is particularly frustrating because just two months ago, Google denied reports that Stadia was going to be shut down.

According to Harrison, Google will refund customers for all hardware purchases made through the Google Store, as well as all game and add-on content purchased through the Stadia store. Google introduced Stadia in 2019, joining other tech giants in the gaming industry. Dubbed the "Netflix of video games," Stadia allowed users to stream and play games on a variety of devices, including smartphones and web browsers, using Google's Chromecast streaming device. This provided a console-quality experience without the need for physical hardware. However, there were signs that Stadia was struggling, and in 2021, Google announced that it would no longer produce video games for the platform. Other tech companies, such as Facebook, have also had to adjust their gaming strategies in recent months. The decision to shut down Stadia also comes as Google and other tech firms reassess their hiring and investments in the face of market challenges and concerns about a potential global recession.

It appears that even the Google Stadia social media manager was not aware of the decision to shut down the service, which has caused confusion and uncertainty for developers. Google had previously maintained that it had high hopes for Stadia and would continue to support it, despite scaling back its operations and ending first party development. However, the sudden shutdown has caught many developers off guard and they only learned about it through news articles like the one published by The Verge on Twitter. While Google has stated that it plans to utilize Stadia's streaming technology in other ways, it is currently unclear how this will affect developers. While consumers will be able to get their money back, it is uncertain what the future holds for developers working on the platform.

Although it is shutting down the Stadia service, Google stated that it remains "deeply committed to gaming." The company plans to utilize some of the technology behind Stadia for other products, according to Harrison. Players will be able to access their Stadia game library and play until January 18, 2023, allowing them to finish their final sessions. Harrison stated that the majority of refunds are expected to be processed by mid-January 2023, and further information about the refund process will be provided in the Help Center.
