The 2020 Game & Watch featuring The Super Mario Brothers

For anyone who has a super Mario fan and dwells in nostalgia, would widely appreciate a marvelous resurrection of a once cheap portable gaming device that Nintendo had easily accessible on the market 40 years ago. It was hard yet tempting for me not to purchase this rare item Nintendo was marketing for novelty reasons. While at Walmart, I was originally planning to purchase another accessory, I stumbled upon the game and watch that several people a month earlier were trying to order online.

Watch mode

I just had to get it, so I asked the Walmart store clerk to open up the shelf and grab it for me. I purchased it without any hesitation then went to the food court area to immediately open it up and test it out for myself.

shiny copper plastic finish and lightweight design:

The moment I opened it up from the box, I’ve noticed how lightweight it felt. Sort of like a calculator. It dons a LCD screen and has a USB-C port for charging ( doesn’t include a charging brick)and it felt comfortable in my hand. Mind you, I didn’t grow up in the early 80s, so as far as I’m concerned, this was my very first Game & Watch that I’ve ever touched within my existence. But if that is the case, compared to what Nintendo offered 40 years ago, this was certainly a step above anything out in terms of quality for it‘s $50 price tag.

I could only imagine how awesome it would’ve been though, if the game and watch had full LCD color screen and featured three games, two of which, were around $60 in the mid 80s when they first came out, compact into a small lightweight plastic handheld that was primarily limited in graphics or scrolling movements like its Gameboy predecessor, I then fantasized over the likely possibility of anyone who lived through that era if they’d wish home gaming consoles were possible to play on bite size and portable devices like on a Game & Watch.

Let’s not forget, there are a bunch of emulator base handhelds from third-party manufacturers that are available now on Amazon and other online retailers that could play the same super Mario brothers game and then some that equip with an entire NES catalog of Nintendo games through a mod. Not to mention, there’s already several YouTube videos of owners hacking their Game & Watches to play mod versions of DOOM or other NES emulated titles.

But hackable emulators aside, there was something about this Game & Watch that anchors a pivotal moment that retro gaming on smaller bite size devices was officiated and verified as a product for the nostalgic demographic. Except, Nintendo created this Game & Watch as more of a novelty item one could collect.

Features 3 games inside of the hardware:

D-Pad added for smooth game play

Out of the box, this device has three games installed: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Brothers 2(The Japanese version) and Ball. It also functions as a clock that stays on for around three minutes before it goes on sleep mode and turns off. You just have to click the power button to turn the display back on.

What simply amazes me, is now I can walk outside and go anywhere and take full super Mario brothers games with me in my pocket. Might not be such a big deal for Gen Z but for a millennial and someone who is Gen X who grew up during the era where playing video games was confined to a home a clunky console , you have to say for $50, this was the best deal you could get.

The LCD screen display makes games like Super Mario Bros sharp, crisp and fluid like the original NES title
A and B buttons are rubber as so are the menu option pad buttons

Game Play:

gameplay was rather smooth and the rubber buttons weren’t so bad that they cramped my fingers or hands overtime. Although I don’t believe that this device was meant for you to play upon hours, eight Max is the amount of time it would take till the battery completely drains. It feels light in my hand as if I’m holding a cheap Doller Tree calculator yet plays like the worlds smallest NES gameboy minus the 30+ other titles that were released.

The Stunning but super small LCD screen

Ball featuring Mario

The LCD display is tiny by design, and if you read the paperwork that comes attach to the box, you can read how overplaying the Fame & Watch Strenuously overtime might result to strain of the eye or an extreme cases seizures if you‘re epileptically sensitive( definitely could see an epileptic episode occur during a Mario’s Star power up )However there is a 1 in 1 million chance that that may happen to you. And as long as you play it in segments then take breaks, you’d be okay.

Hidden feathers:

There are several neat little touches to this newly revised handheld. When you’re on clock mode, long press the A button and a Mario Paint tutorial will come up. Long press the A button on any of The Mario Brother games to obtain infinite lives.

Super Mario 2 (Japanese version) on Game & Watch

There’s 35 different animations within the clock’s animations, including Yoshis roaming about the classic Mario Board on the screen. You can even change the background to the classic Mario castle brick format. On Ball, you can activate Mario head to Luigi. Plus So much more.

Is this Game & Watch Worth buying?:

If you truly crave for the nostalgic experience in the palm of your hand without utilizing a Nintendo switch handheld or an unofficial third party handheld with quack-mod versions of the same title, then this would be the official and proper way to practice your Nostalgia fix.

However, if you’re content with playing mods of the Mario brothers game from some quack-A-Do handheld made from a Chinese company you never heard of or already have Nintendo Switch Online NES Emulator on your console, then A Game & Watch probably won’t serve you any purpose .

Alternatively, if you already have Nintendo switch online account, or even a third-party handheld with a mod version of super Mario brothers yet want to collect a game and watch that will no longer be in supply after a couple months, I definitely go grab one while you can even for the novelty of having one on hand!

If you must get your hands on one immediately if all options were exhausted, here’s one place where they still might have it in stock.
