In a crucial game that Mumbai Indians had to win, they secured an impressive eight-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (May 21). The target they needed to chase was set at a respectable 201 runs, and thanks to an outstanding century by Cameron Green and a somewhat unsteady half-century by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians easily accomplished the task with two overs to spare. Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be heading towards a total between 210 and 220, primarily due to a strong opening partnership between Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma. However, Mumbai Indians managed to limit their progress towards the end of the innings, with Chris Jordan and Madhwal performing well. Sunrisers Hyderabad's bowling attack lacked the necessary impact, relying mostly on the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar, as the rest of the bowlers were relatively inexperienced. Mumbai Indians' victory propelled them to the fourth position in the standings, and now they have to rely on Bangalore losing their final league game.

Achievements of Rohit

Although he didn't perform at his absolute best, Rohit Sharma's crucial fifty helped him achieve a couple of significant milestones along the way. He became the second player, after Virat Kohli, to accumulate over 5000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a single franchise. Additionally, he surpassed the mark of 11000 runs in T20 cricket, making him the second Indian batsman, after Kohli, to reach this landmark.

The humorous singles with SKY

Suryakumar Yadav doesn't usually focus on taking single runs towards the end of a game, but this time he had a specific task. Mumbai Indians (MI) were on the verge of winning, and Cameron Green was also on the brink of achieving his first century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although they needed 14 runs to win, Green still required 12 runs to reach the milestone. As the required runs reduced to seven, Green now needed six, and it was crucial for Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) to play without making any mistakes in order to help his partner achieve the century. SKY calmly managed to score a couple of single runs, allowing Green to strike the winning run and reach his well-deserved hundred.

Season of roller coasters for Mumbai

As the tournament went on, the bowling lineup of the Mumbai Indians started to dwindle, posing a serious threat to their performance and reputation. However, their impressive batting lineup rose to the occasion and proved to be their saviour. With the implementation of the impact rule, the Mumbai Indians relied on their batsmen to rescue them from difficult situations and provide support to the struggling bowlers. Vijay Tagore discusses how the five-time champions managed to strengthen their team in unconventional ways during the latter stages of the tournament.

The disappointing SRH effort

Sunrisers Hyderabad had a season to forget, with some questionable team choices and disappointing performances. While there were a few bright spots, such as Harry Brook's impressive century against KKR and their thrilling victory over RR, overall, SRH lacked the necessary energy and drive. Their tactical decisions were also lacking, and their bowling struggled throughout the season. The final league game against MI perfectly epitomised their overall performance in the season.

Gill's tonne outperforms Kohli's special to help MI advance and eliminate RCB

In a game that may have seemed insignificant for them, the Gujarat Titans displayed no signs of complacency as they convincingly defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday (May 21). Initially, rain had threatened to disrupt the match, but the weather cleared up, allowing Virat Kohli to showcase his batting skills with back-to-back centuries, providing some stability for RCB after a shaky middle overs performance. Faf du Plessis couldn't capitalize on his good start, while Glenn Maxwell was dismissed quickly. Kohli was left to carry the burden alone, although Michael Bracewell and Anuj Rawat provided some support. Despite RCB posting a competitive score of 197, Shubman Gill's exceptional batting display made it appear rather insignificant. While the Gujarat Titans' chase didn't begin explosively, Gill steadily increased his momentum and ultimately dealt a decisive blow to RCB. As a result, Mumbai Indians secured a spot in the playoffs after a two-year absence.

Rashid's middle overs magic spell

Although he managed to take only one wicket, it was a significant one as he dismissed Glenn Maxwell. Moreover, Rashid Khan's economical bowling performance helped slow down the scoring rate of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team, especially after a quick start in the initial overs. Considering there was less than two days remaining for Qualifier 1, one might have expected Rashid to take a break. However, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team displayed unwavering determination, and so did the Afghan leg-spinner who cleverly entangled the RCB batsmen with his skillful bowling.

GT's bat experiment

Since the match didn't hold much significance for his team, team captain Hardik Pandya decided to mix things up with the batting order. Instead of taking the position at number three himself, he sent Vijay Shankar out to bat. It appeared that Hardik wanted to give other players more opportunities to play, as David Miller, Dasun Shanaka, and Rahul Tewatia were all given higher batting positions.

Another year of déjà vu for RCB

Over the years, the RCB season has faced two significant challenges that have consistently emerged. Firstly, there has been a heavy reliance on a small group of players for batting, which has proven to be a recurring pattern. Secondly, the bowling attack has often lacked effectiveness on flat pitches. Although there has been some improvement in this area in recent seasons, it has primarily been observed on tracks that provided assistance to the bowlers or were slower in nature. RCB continues to encounter difficulties when playing on batting-friendly surfaces. Kaushik Rangarajan delves deep into the ongoing concerns of RCB, which persist even in another season filled with missed opportunities.

Rookies and veterans compete in the playoffs

After the league stages concluded, the top-four teams have finally secured their spots, each with their own unique qualities. On one side, we have two highly accomplished franchises in IPL history, namely MI and CSK. On the other side, we have the two newest teams in the IPL, GT and LSG, although GT holds the defending champions title and appears to be in great form for another championship. In Qualifier 1, CSK will face GT, and the winner will advance to the final, while the loser will have another chance in the match between LSG and MI, known as the Eliminator, for a shot at the final. Expect some intense action and excitement in these upcoming matches!
