This article is for people who love strategy games. If you’re a hardcore gamer, this is the article for you. These games are worth your time and effort as they include hours of gameplay and will constantly test your skills as a gamer.

Most Difficult Strategy Games

These games are impossible to write guides for, and even following the strategy guide will be a daunting task that will require copious amounts of time and practice. If you want to win these games, you’ll have to get good at them.

Relic

Relic is a god game developed by Alexey Pajitnov (of Tetris fame) and his brother Yuri, in which you play as the god of an ancient civilization. You control entire cities with your godly powers and have to build them to make your people happy.

Caesar

It is a god game developed by John de Lancie, who also created Q-Bert. You play as Caesar and are tasked with building your empire up from small villages to a massive megacity. The game is by no means easy; in fact, it can be insanely difficult if you don’t pay attention to all the game’s nuances.

7 Wonders

It is a civilization game where you play as a small nation and must build up your civilization before other nations do the same. The game is turn-based, and it’s one of those few games (maybe the only) where if you aren’t paying attention to what your opponents are doing, they’re going to take over the entire world before you can even get started.

Dominion

It is probably the most well-known difficult strategy game out there, as it has garnered its fair share of awards and accolades. ChronoBreak licensed the game from the publisher, who had to create a rule book because of the number of rules.

The Gallerist

The Gallerist is a game developed by Moo Studio that emphasizes strategy and planning as opposed to luck. It’s a unique experience because it feels a lot like a city building game, but you don’t get to control the buildings or even their placement.

Supreme Commander (multiplayer)

This real-time strategy (RTS) game heavily emphasizes defensive gameplay during the single-player campaign and therefore makes its multiplayer mode all the more difficult. Human opponents have many tactics for neutralizing the strategies the game encourages, so new players will need to master the game’s systems to adapt and triumph in competitive matches.

Age of Empires II

Age of Empires is one of the most well-known RTS franchises ever created, providing engaging gameplay that combines macro- and micro-management flawlessly. The higher difficulties of the game give players an incredibly challenging AI opponent to play against. If you’re interested in testing your mastery of RTS systems, look no further than AoE II.

Frozen Synapse

If you’re more interested in playing turn-based strategy, Frozen Synapse is a great option. Its system allows you to plan out the action of your turn and then run a simulation to see how your plan will play out. You can continue to modify your turn until you are satisfied, and then your actions will be resolved simultaneously with your opponent’s. Offering a challenging single-player campaign, as well as a multiplayer option, any strategy enthusiast is bound to derive many hours of fun from this excellently crafted experience.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Often considered one of the most difficult strategy games of the modern era, XCOM offers a series of absorbing missions in which the player faces off against alien invaders. If you’re interested in an experience that will truly test the limits of your strategic abilities, XCOM is an excellent choice.

Conclusion

Don’t let the fact that these games are difficult discourage you from playing them. These are some of the most well-known and acclaimed strategy games out there, and even with their steep learning curves, they’re some of the most rewarding experiences you can have.
