Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

A review of my first run-through

My first run through screen shot.

I love the Kingdom Heart series. There's a lot to it, and while I am still only just actually getting to delve into the series, I am in love with it. My first experience with Kingdom Hearts was when I was younger. Not quite a teenager, but I don't know, it's been a while.

I started playing the game on my cousin's PlayStation. But I never got to finish it. Late last year, at the age of 32, I was finally able to complete this game from start to finish (it took me over a year). Then I was able to play the second game, Chain of Memories.

I'm doing an article on Chain of Memories because come to find out, it still to this day gets a lot of hate. The mechanics are a lot different from the first Kingdom Hearts. In the first one, you get to swing your keyblade and fight the enemies in a freestyle fighting form. You have Donald and Goofy by your side the entire game, fighting next to you and healing you through it.

In Chain of Memories, it's a lot different. First of all when you get into the main setting of where you will be spending the game, Donald and Goofy are not with you the whole time while you're playing. Basically only during cinematics and when you manage to get one of their summon cards.

Instead of freestyle play, you have to collect cards, and build a deck to adequately be able to use combinations and single cards to fight enemies. The point is to build powerful decks as you level up in order to handle the foes you are facing.

A lot of people hated the card mechanic for the fighting, and at first, so did I. In fact, I was half tempted to skip this game and just carry on. But I wanted it for the story, and I am a completionist in my heart (even if I don't have the attention span or the time to ever really complete any game at all).

I found that after the first few levels you are able to increase your card power points (which is what you need to make your deck bigger), and your deck becomes big enough to handle a few combos (called sleights) and you start understanding how to use your deck, the game became rather fun.

It's a good game, if you give it a chance. There was a fun twist at the end of the game I found. When you beat the game the first time using Sora, you're able to play Riku's story. I thought this was great. I have not yet ventured into Riku's story due to the fact that I want to go back and complete the stats you see in the image above to completion before I venture forward.

As you can see, I've put almost 100 hours into this game since February of this year. About 30 of those hours are probably spent on pause while I did the mom thing.

I can't wait to see what Riku's story holds. I enjoyed the story of Chain of Memories, and I would say the story is worth the play-through if you can get used to the card mechanics of the game.

The secret to a good deck is a strong combination of physical attacks and magical attacks, including summoning battle friends like Cloud and Simba.

For some boss battles, magic can be a double-edged sword. In areas where you have lightning enemies, its better to build your deck with absolutely no lightning magics at all, and that means Genie and Donald can be a wasted combination in some cases as the AI doesn't filter what magics heal the enemies and which damages them.

I found that I had to scrap and rebuild countless decks throughout the game, and it was actually really fun. The more combination sleights Sora learned the more powerful the deck and the combinations become, so it's always fun to remake your deck, upgrading it to the most powerful combinations as you go.

I personally grew to like this game, even though the start was a little rough. However, for those of you that don't want to play the game, and would like to get personally acquainted with the story of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, you can always read the book.
