Kenway on the Horizon of AC Black Flag

Assassins Creed Black Flag

Just years after the events of Assassin’s Creed III we return. Samples were taken from Desmond’s body just moments after his death. Allowing Abstergo to continue their explorations of his genetic memories. Also still having a link to his ancestral database. With a new upgraded Animus and the newfound cloud abilities this should be a breeze. Especially with Edward Kenway. We’ll get to that in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.

Instead of not only playing a character in the “reality” portion like we did with Desmond, this time we’re playing as some unnamed player. Hired on by Abstergo Entertainment from the Montreal Headquarters. Putting the gameplay in first person perspective. The job is to simply sift through the memories of Kenway which is an eighteenth century pirate.

Yes I know the name sounds very familiar. As it most assuredly should. Edward Kenway is the father of Haytham Kenway. As well as Connors grandfather. By going through Edwards memories, it’s to “gather information” for an “interactive feature film”. Us out here in the real world knows what’s going on.

This is one huge ploy by the Templars to gather information. They’re on the search for a First Civilization structure. The Observatory. With the help of Edwards memories they should be able to find it easily. Or so they truly hope nothing messes it up.

As we have in many of the Assassin’s games previous to this one. There are conspiracies, spy work, and lots of assassinations. However, on the high seas there’s also numerous battles between ships. Traveling from port to port and completing assignments and tasks at hand. Going from a simple pirate to an evolution of Assassin.

Playing as Edward you will unravel a conspiracy between high ranking Templars within both the British and Spanish empires. All under the disguise of cleaning up piracy in the Carribean. In effort to locate the Sage who ends up being later identified as Bartholomew Roberts. He is the one who can lead them to the Observatory.

The Observatory can be used with a sample of blood to monitor anyone anywhere in the world. They intend to use it to blackmail world leaders to lead towards domination. In this Edward becomes an unwitting player when he accidentally kills a rogue Assassin, Duncan. Taking his place to infiltrate a meeting of Templars in Havana he meets Woodes Rogers. As well a Cuban Governor and Templar Grandmaster Laureano Torres.

His actions and reckless behavior sets him on the path to pursue the Sage himself. As well as all the conspirators from the Yucatan Peninsula to Jamaica. He eventually catches up to Roberts on the island of Principe which is off the African Coast. Of course things don’t always go as planned. Or as easy as they seem.

You cannot just simply have a game about piracy without having a band of pirates in it. Blackbeard, Hornigold, James Kidd and Charles Vane join with intentions of their own. A dream of pirate utopia. Where they live beyond the rule of Kings, Queens, and all rulers. With Kenway’s help they are able to see a realization of a pirate republic and seize Nassau. However, poor governance, disease, and lack of economy decimates them almost completely. Allowing the Templars to utilize their own downfalls against them for their gain.

Eventually Edward and Roberts discover the location of the Observatory. They retrieve the artifact powering it. However, Roberts betrays Kenway at the last moment. Kenway ends up serving a brief stint in prison for piracy. Help comes from Ah Tabai, an Assassin Mentor, who aids in Edwards escape. Edwards choses then to join the Order of Assassins.

Chasing down and killing Roberts he retrieves the artifact and returns it to the Observatory. Sealing it away forever. Afterwards he is faced with an uncertain future. Until he receives news of his wife’s passing and the immediate imminent arrival of his unknown daughter, Jennifer Scott. Edward tells Ah Tabai that he will continue his fight against the Templars in England.

Cutting to a scene for years later. Edward, Jennifer and Haytham all attend The Beggar’s Opera at the London Royal Opera House.

Outside of the Animus you’re contacted by Abstergos Entertainment Information Technology Manager, John. In belief that their employer knows more than they’re telling anyone. Convincing the unnamed employee to hack other Animus terminals and deliver the information to Shaun and Rebecca. Who’re undercover within Abstergo infiltrating it to gather information.

The facility goes under lockdown when the hacks are discovered. John then sends the player to access the Animus’ Core. Here Juno appears in an incorporeal form. Divulging that even those it was necessary to open her temple to save the world. The world was in fact not ready for her. She is unable to affect it or possess the player as her agents had intended.

With this news John reveals himself as the reincarnation of the Sage. Owing no allegiance to either the Templars or the Assassins. He tries to kill the player to cover up the failure. Instead he is killed by Abstergo Security and pinned as the one who hacked them. With him dead the Assassin’s contact the player to continue on with the infiltration of Abstergo.

Although left with unanswered questions. Who else was working with John aka the Sage and to what end?
