Kansas played its third game in a row and had a three-game losing streak, but it pulled off the upset of Kentucky 91-81 on Sunday in the Jayhawks’ season opener. The Wildcats were coming off their best performance of the year, winning 111-92 against Michigan State. However, Kansas was not to be denied and prevailed with an intense effort from both teams.

The Jayhawks led by as many as 14 points early in the second half before the UK rallied to make it 80-71 with just over 10 minutes remaining. But it was not to be Kansas closed out the game with a 13-2 run including 4 straight free throws by Pitino. The victory gives Kansas their first win of the season and makes them 7-1 overall and 1-0 in SEC play.

Kansas Overcomes 3-game Losing Streak to Defeat Kentucky 91-81.

Kansas’ losing streak began on February 2nd when it lost to then-No. 12 Kentucky 91-81. The Jayhawks have since lost three more games, including a home loss to then-No. 3 Wichita State on March 15th. However, Kansas has made some changes in its coaching staff and rotation that should help the team improve next season.

One change that has been made is the addition of shooting guard Jarred Vanderbilt from Oral Roberts University. Vanderbilt is a 6'4" player who averaged 18 points per game for the Wildcats last season and has experience playing in the NCAA Tournament. Assistant coach DJ LeMahieu also returns for his final season with the Jayhawks after serving as an assistant under Rick Majerus at Tulsa (2015-16). Majerus was fired following the Wildcats’ first losing campaign of the Majerus era.

In terms of players, head coach Bill Self said that he plans to use a four-guard lineup this upcoming season which will feature senior point guard Collin Sexton, sophomore small forward Lamar Patterson, junior heavy forward Joel Embiid, and freshman power forward Tomjan Matic. This lineup should give Kansas some offensive firepower to overcome its poor shooting record and beat teams like Kentucky and Louisville without any complacency.

What Kansas Did to Defeat Kentucky.

Kansas grabbed a victory over then No. 12 Kentucky 92-79 on February 17th thanks to an efficient performance from freshman center Nerlens Noel and reserves Elijah Thomas and Deonte Burton III each scoring 14 points off the bench including 6 rebounds and 5 assists off the bench respectively. With this win, Kansas improved to 7-4 on the year despite having only played six games due to injury or illness throughout the season.

In total, 11 players scored in double figures with Embiid leading all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field including 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. This win was also a major step in helping Self’s team improve its record to 7-4.

To build off of this win, Self and his players will need to continue playing hard throughout the season. The Jayhawks will have an important matchup against then No. 5 Wichita State on March 15th which is a must-win game for Kentucky. If Kansas can beat Wichita State, it would improve to 8-2 on the year and be in a good position to make an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Kansas’ Next Season.

Kansas’ next season is currently unknown as Self has not yet decided on his starting lineup and what type of offense he plans to run with Collin Sexton and Lamar Patterson at the point guard spot. However, if the team performs well against Wichita State and reaches the NCAA Tournament, it would likely be announced that Sexton and Patterson are both returning for their senior seasons.

Kansas Overcomes Its Losing Streak to Defeat Kentucky 91-81.

Kansas decisively defeated Kentucky 91-81 in a game played on February 15th, 2019. The Wildcats had been losing their three previous games by an average of 14 points per game. However, Kansas rebuilt its roster and coaching staff during the offseason and went into this game with a new sense of purpose. With Jerian Grant back on the court and leading the team in scoring with 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting, Kansas was able to overcome its losing streak.

Kansas’ main strategy was to play strong defense and not let Kentucky make easy baskets. Head coach Rick Majerus also used his timeout management skills to great effect, preventing Kentucky from getting too comfortable or too creative. By putting pressure on Kentucky’s perimeter players, Kansas prevented them from making easy shots and allowing Majerus to call timeouts when he needed them most.

For Kansas to win this game, it will need to improve its offense. Grant was not able to create enough offense for his own sake (although he did manage 24 points), and Majerus may need to switch up some of his playmaking strategies to get more production from his players. If Kansas can continue playing like this next season, it could be one of the teams that makes it to the NCAA tournament.
