Government's efforts and growing environmental concerns have made electric mobility extremely relevant for the Indian market. This is especially true of the two-wheeler space where electric vehicles enjoy lucrative subsidies. As a result, even mainstream two-wheeler brands have also jumped on the EV bandwagon. It started with Bajaj that launched Chetak Electric in January, closely followed by TVS' iQube electric scooter. And now, looks like even Hero MotoCorp is preparing to join this list. According to media reports, India's largest two-wheeler maker has been working on its electric scooter for some while and could launch it soon. It must be noted that Hero Group already has an electric mobility division -- Hero Electric -- which is likely to remain a separate entity even when the Hero MotoCorp ventures into the electric mobility space in the country.
The details about this upcoming Hero electric scooter are scarce but the company is likely to base it on Maestro Edge 125 scooter. So, Hero MotorCorp's first electric scooter is likely to get LED headlamp with frosted-glass surrounds, wide front apron with creases, a black cowl, LED tail lights, etc. However, the e-scooter will most likely get different design for alloy wheels. Given that the company is a little late to the EV party, it will have to equip its first electric product with enough features to be on par with its rivals. So, it is fair to assume that it will get a fully digital instrument panel with smartphone connectivity. In addition to this, the console is also likely to provide information like range, battery charge, vehicle diagnostics, nearest charging station, etc. to the rider via a dedicated application.
And as for its specifications, Hero MotorCorp's first electric scooter is expected to get a lithium-ion battery with hub-mounted electric motor.We can expect it to offer a riding range of over 80 km/charge and a top-speed of around 70 km/h. Anything less than this will make it less equipped than its key rivals. It will also get different riding modes that will help the rider optimize performance or range, depending upon the requirement.
